Can you think of any movie that fell below expectations despite having a solid cast?
I saw "America's Sweethearts". It had Billy Crystal, John Cusack, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Christopher Walken, Seth Green, and so on....
It should have been a great film, but was pretty much fluff and just not that compelling.

Yet the final result...was truly terrible.
But that movie just shows that this type of movie should be left to the Brits.

I strongly disagree. I love this film, and the cast did a great job.
I agree with the good General Zod on The Avengers. It was truly one of the worst films I have ever seen.

It was such a great cast that as a 14 year old boy I went to see it in the theatre. so disappointing.
I too have to disagree on the Prestige, but I'm a sucker for magicians on film.

As soon as the clone machine turned up, I checked out. It could have been Oscar nominated film and turned into a joke.

Well, it was based on a novel that

The sci-fi aspect was an understandable turnoff to some people, but the point wasn't really about the revelation of a magic machine -- Michael Caine or someone says up front within the first 15 minutes or so that there was a teleporting machine and it was real. It was the escalation of that disappearing trick from lookalike to twin brother to clone, and the fact that Hugh Jackman became so consumed with beating Bale and the adulation of the trick that he murdered himself by drowning every night. So the twist is that instead of a final revelation about how he faked a teleporting machine, it's the final revelation that the machine was actually real but it wasn't teleporting, it was that he was cloning and murdering himself, in order to frame Bale and steal his daughter, because that's how far gone he'd etc etc.
The movie also functions as a trick played on the audience. Because "they're looking for the secret but they don't want to find it because they want to be fooled" or whatever the dialogue is. So you don't get the secret, you get fooled. |
The movie also works as a roman à clef of the Monday Night Wars, so that's cool.

I'm not sure we can get much better of an answer than Batman & Robin.
Unless, that is, you're one of the many people who hated "Mars Attacks!" It had a pretty insane cast: Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sara Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Tom Jones, Jim Brown, Natalie Portman, Pam Grier, and Jack Black.
I happened to like the movie. That's probably because they killed off EVERYONE (except Jim Brown and Pam Grier, I believe). I thought that was kinda cool and unexpected.
