I flipped to Obama as soon as Cole mentioned "There is nothing more important going on tonight than the WWE title match." I came here to watch a title match and the Punk stuff not a the GOP talking points on how evil our President is. Turned back as soon as Obama was done to see ADR fail to cash it in. As someone who still has vid nightmares of HHH's 20 minute promos, I did like this one. We got JR back and someone other than HHH was made to look like a hero in Morrison. So, he is doing ok for now, but he can't do these every week and even going to Smackdown this week seems to be a bit dodgy.

I do have to ask the question since I must of missed it, but Rey have a choice or did HHH say this is going to happen tonight? Either way, its a bad move. Cena vs. Rey is a dream match and I would even say would get a better buyrate than Cena/Punk II. You could have Punk screwing around during SummerSlam or even give hints he might be at Summerslam while at Wrigley field or Soldier Field buying Bears tickets. They could do a lot with him and have done a lot with him, it just doesn't feel like the right time to bring him back into the corporate WWE world. It just feels like Nexus again where its too early, too soon. Ironically, we are heading to the same PPV where Nexus to me died. Hopefully, they will learn from their mistakes.

So weird to hear a known song like "Cult of Personality" playing on Raw. I just saw the clip and got goosebumps.
I loved how they drew it out and didn't have Punk come out immediately.
He really should have came in how he left-- through the crowd. Coming down the ramp just doesn't feel as rebellious.

True. But obviously from a kayfabe standpoint, Triple H has gotten him to sign a new contract. Punk came out from the entrance ramp, with new music, a new TitanTron, and a nameplate on his belt. He could have gotten the latter from WWEShopZone.com, but not the former three.

I think this one more about needing to have Alberto del Rio in the tournament, not wanting him to go to the final and lose, and feeling the need to 'fix' it the next week. It was going to be either Kofi or Riley in that spot. Riley getting the win would've meant more, but I guess Kofi is hurt less by losing the next week? I dunno.

They shoehorned so much angle development, title hotshotting, and wasting of what could have been a big PPV title match that somewhere Tony Schiavone started involuntarily shouting about it being the greatest night in the history of our sport.

Agreed with the general consensus that it felt way too soon to have Punk back on in an official capacity (in as much as having theme music and graphics cued up is pretty official), but Punk has already bailed them out of a huge mismanagement of this angle by taking the mic and singlehandedly pulling it back on course the next week, so I'm willing to let him do the same again.

My hope is, he's still not "officially" signed yet and his role at The Summerslam will be that he will be negotiating his contract with HHH live in the ring. Which is a ridiculous thing to have on a Big 4 PPV and a ridiculous thing for any of us to want them to have on a PPV, and yet a Punk/HHH war of words with Punk getting to lay into HHH for all the stuff that everyone (and by everyone, I mean me) has rightly hated the guy for over the last decade is as good of a drawing point as going back to Punk/Cena so quickly. Ideally, Punk shames Cena into admitting that he's a Paper Champion next week and that Cena's belt is a phantom title, and only then does Punk reveal that he's not officially back yet and was just goading Cena into admitting that Punk remains the real champ in exile.

Cena came off like a real creep last night congratulating Misterio and then, presumably, running off to go kiss ass to the new boss to get his rematch that same night after Misterio has had to do a ladder match and three title tournament matches in eight days, while Cena had last Monday off. Hopefully, Punk points this out to Misterio, and Misterio does invoke the rematch clause for The Summerslam (officially changing the title to The Summerslam should be one of Punk's contract demands), if only because Cena/Misterio really was a great TV match - loved the spot where Rey rolled Cena into the STF, and Cena does nice work selling for Misterio - and could be a fantastic PPV match with the added element of Rey being rightly upset that Cena essentially banked on Misterio's upright nature to basically screw him over.

This would also give them a little more intrigue for Del Rio: does he do the obvious thing and wait around to go after the winner of Cena/Rey, or does he stalk Punk on the assumption that the MITB case makes Punk's belt a live target for him any time he's around?

All I know for sure is, next year I want them to make it so the two MITB winners have the right to go after which ever top title they choose, so we get a situation where one guy is always running out to threaten to cash in at an opportune moment, but then the other guy always runs out right behind him to threaten to cash in on the first casher-inner, and then they both get spooked and warily agree to not cash in at all. That, or they give us a Summerslam spot this year where Punk and Cena are both down in the ring, and a confused Del Rio doesn't know who he's supposed to cash in on, tries to cover them both at the same time and they both kick out and comically shoot him out of the ring, accompanied by a cartoon slide whistle noise and a Wilhelm Scream.

Does anyone else feel that WWE hot-shotted this to try and get as many PPV buys as possible for SummerSlam? With the resolution of the NFL Lockout yesterday, certainly PPV numbers in the fall will decline (as they typically do.) I see this as WWE capitalizing on the hottest thing they've had in a long time, from a financial point-of-view.

Honestly, I kind of expected Punk last week, so this wasn't particularly shocking to me. I am really enjoying the renewed focus on wrestling on this show, and Mysterio put in two pretty good tv matches last night. His match with Cena was especially good, and it says a lot for Mysterio that for a minute, I actually thought he might beat Cena. I'm not thrilled that they put the title back on Cena, and as others have mentioned, it makes Rey look like a complete idiot, but with Punk back I'm still excited to see what happens next week.

That is an interesting point, but you would also have to think that something as hot or perceived to be as hot as Punk would help their ratings sustain rather than admit defeat in the fall. Of course, with how bad the PPV buys have been of late you could be on to something. To me, Rey vs. Cena with a nice build would be enough to sell SummerSlam as well as the above mentioned HHH/Punk contract signing. The other problem is they probably know they have milked Orton/Christian for so long that they need to do something, but they really don't know what, so Cena/Punk II is a safe bet if it happens.

Anyone else beginning to suspect that Punk's original contract doesn't actually expire until September, as was originally reported? This could all be one giant fake-out before he does disappear in a couple of months.

It seemed logical to me...he was due his mandatory rematch with Punk but was "screwed out of it" by Punk leaving, plus Vince screwed him by leaving him out of the tournament.

Plus, if he beat ADR and lost a solid match doesn't it set Kofi up as a potential one-off title challenger to Del Rio after he cashes in and wins the title?

I thought the Punk return was great, and the monster pop he got when he held up the "real" title made it totally worth it.

    2. HHH says Cena and Rey both wanted the title match. I can see Rey as a face never backing down from a fight, but why would Cena, the guy who cares so much about winning on the up and up that it cost him the title against Punk, be so eager to wrestle on a huge advantage against a tired guy?

He's such a company man that he knew they had to get a SummerSlam main booked by last night so they'd have 2 weeks to promote it.

    3. Hell, for that matter, why did there have to be an elaborate two week world title tournament if WWE just wanted the title to end up with Cena?

See, Cena was fired, and. uh. two title changes on the same Raw, that'll trend on twitter. surprises! TV moments! equity!

    4. Why have Kofi Kingston upset Albert Del Rio if you're going to have him lose clean in a rematch the very next week?

I think they didn't want Del Rio to go anywhere in the tournament and not win it so they rolled him right up.

Ha! That would be great! I too, am not fully convinced that Punk is "back". From a kayfabe standpoint, why would HHH waste time with the finals of the tourney if he'd signed Punk back?

It makes sense for Punk to show up to taunt the "new" champ, but if he's back, it really cuts the balls off the angle.

However, if this was a case of Punk crashing the party, it was awfully convenient for him to have no problem with backstage security AND have music and titantron video prepped.

Of course, in my fantasyland this would be explained by it being revealed that security and production were ordered to let Punk through by the Raw GM who would be revealed as Paul Heyman...

Or they signed an extension?

Or Punk realized he might not ever get a push like this again and agreed to a new contract?

BRA. VO.

I too think Punk is back too quick, but I think the massive reaction he got in Chicago put the company on its heels a bit. So yeah, two hotshot-y shows, but things should calm down a bit next week.

What I meant was, why did he give it to him last night, instead of next week, or the PPV? Why give Cena such an unfair advantage? That's something given to heels, by heel authority figures. HHH is a face right now, but that was a heel move, making the new champ defend later that night.

Teddy Long kind of screwed a babyface Christian as well. Maybe that's what babyface authority figures nowadays do to newly crowned babyface champions.
