Entertainment Weekly has new high-res photos of the new Spider-Man, Mary Jane, Aunt May, Uncle Ben, Curt Conners, and the new suit. (ew.com)

I'm pleasantly impressed. I think this stuff looks pretty good. The first teaser is expected next week.

I'm assuming you're joking. The suit looks god-awful and that is not Peter Parker or Aunt May. Emma Stone is pretty spot-on as Gwen, though, and I've got no problems with Lizard either.

Garfield is a tall, lanky Spider-Man, different from the little jacked one Tobey played. Closer in that regard to the Spider-Man Ditko drew. The new suit doesn't bug me (pun intended, and I know, spiders are arachnids).

There is just way too much blue in that spider suit.

I'm really not a fan of this trend of rebooting franchises in the same decade.

I don't want to sit through the origin story again.

Spider-Man 3 was 2007. Last decade. But I know what you mean.

Emma Stone, who I already loved in Superbad and easy A, looks GREAT.

Everyone else, not so much. Sheen as Uncle Ben I can see, but Sally Field as Aunt May? REALLY? Leary seems too young to be Capt Stacy as I remember him being older in the comics. Hell, I remember everyone being older than presented here.

I agree with the suit. Way too much blue.

With the other movies already having used GG, Doc Ock, Sandman, and Venom as villains, going with The Lizard is a good move, but who does that leave them with for sequels? Kraven, Vulture, Hobgoblin, and Shocker spring to mind.

And if they're not going to have Gwen killed by anyone, I guess they're just going to delete MJ from their film universe.

Well if Raimi hadn't acted like a passive aggressive bitch while making Spider-Man 3, they wouldn't be in the possition of trying to reboot the franchise.

Redoing the origin is gonna kill this thing, regardless of how good it is. People still bitch about the new Superman movie redoing the origin and its been 30 YEARS.

I don't want to see the origin again either. Just to be clear.

But I have to approach this thing from the creative standpoint.

They are rebooting. That's the call the studio made. Raimi is gone. Maguire is gone. Dunst is gone. Never mind them bitching to the press that they're a tough act to follow - true, but it's done. They're gone. Sony has to make a new movie or else they lose the rights to their biggest money making franchise. It's business. Okay.

So. Hire new director. Hire new actors. And big mandate for the reboot: Make Spidey young again. Not in his 20s. Not in college. Back to being a teenager. Why? Because that's something Raimi didn't do.

After Peter got his powers in Raimi's movie, they rocketed ahead to college. Some of the best classic tales of Spider-Man, the original 25 or so issues of Lee and Ditko, were about teenage Peter in high school balancing those troubles with being Spider-Man. Teenage Peter is fertile ground for a new movie to explore, plus Ultimate Spider-Man is a well-spring of material to draw from as well for that subject matter.

Except, people will be confused. Many will think this is Spider-Man 4, a continuation of Raimi. What? He's a teenager again? It's new actors? How do you address that, make it clear this is ALL NEW? Well, shit. The easiest way is with the origin, just tell it again. So there it is. It's a means to an end.

Wanting control over which characters appear in your movie is being a passive-aggressive bitch? Ridiculous. If Raimi hadn't done such a stellar job bringing the franchise to the screen in the first place the studio wouldn't have had a third movie for them to fuck up by trying to tie his hands.

EDIT: John, why not do what THE INCREDIBLE HULK did, and make the opening credits a potted version of the origin? Everyone knows it anyway, and by having the new actors condense it into 90 seconds over the credits lets the audience know that this is a restart. Retelling the whole goddamn origin just ten years after the first film is a terrible idea.

Apparently being subjected to a new interpretation of Spider-Man's origin "just" ten years after seeing it in a movie the first time is the most vile, reprehensible crime ever to be inflicted upon the moviegoing public.

Flames on Optimus breathes a sigh of relief. Since that has now also been replaced by Too Much Blue in New Spider-Suit.

Anyway, I'll see this movie when it comes out. If it's good and I like it, swell. If not, I will rip it apart.

But if you really cannot and will not endure the origin again, don't see it. It's pretty simple.

Boiling down criticism to "if you don't like it, don't watch"? Come on, you're better than that. Can't you see the logical disconnect between Marc Webb et al waxing lyrical about telling an exciting new Spidey story whilst rehashing a film that's younger than the vast majority of the target audience?

No-one's foaming at the mouth here, it's just horribly lazy to tell the same story only three films later. I'd rather see something fresh and new to go along with the new cast, not Peter getting bit and Uncle Ben dying yet again.

Not really. Honestly, I've paid the smallest amount of attention to this Spider-Man reboot. I'm not even that interested in more Spider-Man movies, by Raimi, Webb, or anyone else. I just liked the photos EW released and I'm allowing for the possibility that it could be good. It looks a little different, and different cool with me.

Hey, I agree! I'm not crazy about seeing the origin again either. But I also don't think the origin story Raimi did was so perfect that it can't be re-interpreted. If Webb retells the origin well, that's what's important to me. I don't really know what they're up to with this new Spider-Man, what the story is, besides obviously, we see the origin again. But I don't know how much screen time is devoted to the origin or if the origin is the story. Whatever, I'll find out when I see it. I like the idea of teenage Peter, I like the idea of no (or dramatically reduced) Mary Jane, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt*, that's all.

* Which is not to say I don't have doubts, serious doubts, about everything with this reboot.

But I will try to get into the Sony Spider-Man panel at Comic Con next week. I am curious. (And what did curiosity do to the cat?)

To be clear, I side with Raimi on being able to put whoever he wanted in Spider-Man 3. I don't think he should've been forced to add Venom.

However, that was the studio demand and he agreed to do it. That's where Raimi takes the blame. He half assed Venom into the movie. SM3 comes off as the Sandman movie Raimi wanted to do with the Venom storyline phoned in and tacked on and it ruined the movie. He basically took his ball and went home.

He should have:

A.) Made SM3 a Venom only movie with the promise of doing whatever the hell he wanted the rest of the series.

B.) Cut a deal where he did the black suit in his story and set up Venom at the end as a cliffhanger.

C.) Left the project.

To accept the project and then half ass it because it wasn't what he wanted was immature and screwed over the audience.

He was contracted for three films. He tried to make it work, it didn't. And when he did fight for his way with SM4, look what happened - he got canned and is now being thrown under the bus.

EDIT: This is also kind of a fundamental lack of understanding of how a studio goes about its business. They wouldn't have given Raimi his marching orders and left him to treat Venom as he saw fit. The guy probably had daily notes on how Venom was to be handled, what he needed to look like, and so on.

I think everything/one looks fine except the costume, which is going to take getting used to.

James Bond reboots every 10-15 years, why can't Spider-Man? Especially considering at his core, Peter should be 15-20 years old.

Um, that was the ORIGINAL plan...until they realized they hired a 27 yr old and apparently they're pretty much gonna do the same thing Raimi did, except maybe wait til the 2nd movie to send him to college.

Costume looks like shit.

Since the bad third Raimi film, I've read an estimated 1000 pages of Spider-Man comics. Out of all that, the first 25 issues of Ultimate Spider-Man were by far the best. The mere fact that the script is inspired mostly by Bendis & Bagley's masterpiece is enough for me.

The costume looks different, but if it had been exactly the same as the Raimi films people would be saying that they should have taken a different approach and mixed it up.
