I might be thinking of someone else but wasn't Mickie originally from TNA (as Alexis Laree)? I remember her when I first began watching TNA.

I'd love to see her back but TNA isn't doing anything with Sarita, Wilde, Hamada and the rest of the Knockouts they have now. I'd like to see them be brought back in to the fold before someone else is brought in.

I had to go to do a double-take to make sure what I saw was legit.... and two surprise releases with Mickie James and Shelton Benjamin.

Based on what I have read and perhaps the reasoning to why Mickie James was actually released, it still surprises me because she is one of a handful of divas in the WWE that can actually perform in the ring.

Shelton Benjamin surprises me, but at the same time, it doesn't when I think about it. Shelton was going nowhere at this point with the WWE as he hasn't had a legit feud or storyline in quite some time. I know I said about last month that SB wouldn't be released, but here we are and now I can see why he was released but still comes as a shocker for the WWE and its spring-cleaning.

As for the other releases (Jimmy Wang Yang, Kung Fu Naki, Katie Lea Burchill, and Slam Master J), I am not surprised at all. I don't think Katie Lea was given a chance or opportunity to shine in the spotlight but as for the others, they were stale. As soon as Jesse and Festus ended, so did Slam Master J's career. Jimmy Wang Yang was doing nothing and Kung Fu Naki was entertaining at one point for a few weeks and that was awhile ago. Now Fu Naki can be "TNA's #1 announcer".

Shelton (and TNA) will probably benefit from his departure while Mickie James will be a strong-hold on the knockouts division (assuming she goes to TNA). Quite the amount of releases today and it should be interesting to see if and probably when more WWE people will release; interesting scenarios now as the WWE table-scraps become welcoming meals for TNA.

I remember when Mickie was supposed to be the heir apparent to Trish and she did very well for a while. I'm disgusted that she has to go out on that horrific Piggie James angle, but she can take solace in knowing she can single-handedly save the TNA Knockouts division, which is unwatchable in its current state.

No Shelton? But who will do those crazy ladder spots in every MitB match?

One of only two things I will remember about the 2010 Royal Rumble (other than Edge's return) was the culmination of the Mickie James/Michelle McCool feud. It was done so perfectly. So thank you Mickie for putting up with the mean-spirited angle, and good luck in TNA and in the country music biz.

I was actually wondering what had happened to Shelton when I saw the results of him winning a Superstars or dark match at the SD tapings. And now he is gone like the wind.

They tried to sneak this past us in the middle of the night! MIKE KNOX! That's it! Now they've gone TOO FAR! The line must be drawn HERE! THIS FAR, NO FURTHER!

Naw, I'm just kidding. I don't care.

Shelton and Mickie had good runs. Katie Lea deserved a real run. The rest I won't miss.

What's the oft repeated joke? "Maybe he just hasn't answered his phone today."

Must have been the case with Mike Knox, after all - and to think, he never lost his beard in a match. THEY ARE JUST LEAVING MONEY LYING ON THE TABLE.

A table, mind you, that Knox awkwardly scoop slammed four straight times.

Yes, she was a member of Raven's Gathering along with CM Punk and Julio Dinero.

I wouldn't mind seeing Katie Lea in TNA -- specifically, taking Chelsea's place.

It's unfortunate that TNA, even before Hogan, would drag in any WWE castaway for a while. Now that there are some guys that could actually be valuable they are just viewed as more WWE guys. I think if Test, Rikishi and a few others never happened and we swapped out Orlando Jordan/Shannon Moore/Val Venis/Raven/Stevie/Hall/X-Pac/Christy for Haas/Shelton/Helms/Mickie/Yang/Burchills then maybe people would look at WWE guys going to TNA differently.

Could Mickie fit in with the BP? They REALLY need to add someone if they are going to dominate the KO division. Angelina reuniting probably fits better but TNA seems determined on making her a face.

Knox has a unique look and is not a bad worker. A big man tag team with Tomko wouldn't be terrible or if they give Kendrick a push as a cocky Heel he could be Kendrick's bodyguard though Tomko could fill that role too.

I thought they had already dropped Knox? Knox grew on me because he looked more like a "grizzly bar" than most of the big men in the company of the WWE. Unlike Batista who is waxed everywhere, toned cut muscle, and FABULOUS attire. Knox looked like he slept on the street eating small animals that happened to pass him by, playing in his doom metal band when he wasn't wrestling. Basically he looked like a madman who could really fight you to the death and not a entertainer with a gimmick. Once Punk stole his beard and Shaemus stole his bicycle kick I figured he was long gone.

In fact Knox could have easily been where Shaemus is, but I won't get into that.

Mickie has been looking for an exit from the company for a while. She had been taking online college courses for years, which she may have completed. Maybe Trish and Victoria informed her of the career lifespan of WWE divas before they exited never to be seen again and she prepared for this day.

Benjamin you tried so hard. Out of these three I'd see Benjamin benefiting the most signing to TNA, but the roster is so bloated right now, plus Bishoff and Hogan are the companies black holes. I'm sure it would only depress him. Any chance of him popping up in ROH you think?

I think Mickie and Shelton would both be valuable additions to TNA. But the problem is that they have a huge bloated roster, and only 2 hours of original programming available each week. A reunification of Haas and Benjamin would work as a fine upper-midcard tag team like Beer Money, and Mickie could make an immediate Impact (I punned!) in the KO division, but I feel TNA needs to do its own version of spring cleaning before that is to happen.

I went to TNA's roster, and I see that they have 59 people listed there. Of course that includes the likes of Willie Urbina and Suicide, so the actual number is probably around 50 active wrestlers. This is still too many. On a cursory glance, and from a practical point of view (let's face it, TNA is not going to release Hogan/Flair/3D/Band no matter how much some of us would like), the following people can easily go:

1. Amazing Red: I realize this may be an unpopular choice, but there's nothing that distinguishes Red from the other X-Division stars. And there's many others.
2. Chelsea: I like the suggestion that she could be replaced by Katie Lea.
3. Dr. Stevie
4. Hamada: They've done nothing of note with her.
5. Jesse Neal
6. Kiyoshi: I think he's gone already, but he's on the page. Then again, so is Daniels.
7. Lacey Von Erich: Totally useless in the ring. Could be replaced by a heel Mickie James.
8. Brutus Magnus.
9. Orlando Jordan: If he's just gonna walk around in bubble wrap and caution tape and not wrestle, there's no point. I don't mind the gimmick so much, but the wrestler himself is nothing to write home about.
10. Raven: Well past his expiry date.
11. Rhino: Same as Raven.
12. Tomko: Has done nothing of note.
13. One out of Sarita or Taylor Wilde: They have too many gals if they're just gonna be running one match a week.

That runs us down to about 40 active wrestlers, which is about right for 2 hours of TV programming. It would lend focus to the product, and give the show a good direction, with a number of distinguishable main event, upper midcard, tag, and X-Division feuds. And that Global title can be used in the midcard feuds as well.

What do you think?

No offense, but you misspelled Kofi Kingston.

And I know it's a lot of people released today, but the WWE usually seem to spread them out over a period of time, say 4 days to a week. Are there any other notable wrestlers we should be on the lookout for? I'm thinking possibly Chris Masters, Matt Hardy, and maybe even Santino. They seem to just be occuping space on the WWE shows for now, not really doing anything.

Can't help but think they dropped the ball on Knox. I'm not sure why they lost interest in this guy...he was big, had a great look, had an interesting character (the calm-talking 'doctor of pain' was creepy and different) and was a good worker. The poster who said he could've easily been in Sheamus' spot was bang-on.

With so many hours of TV per week to fill, you need at least a few guys to 'occupy space' as it were.

Everyone really seems to be hoping with all their hearts that Matt will get fired and drop off the face of the earth, but one thing you have to remember is that he still has two meat shields left to take bullets that his haters think are "meant for him" in R-Truth and the recently re-hired Joey Mercury.

That's really the odd thing about him. No matter how much of an IWC whipping boy he is, and no matter how much WWE management seems to be obsessed with booking him in a way where not even his own mother would see him as anything but a pathetic loser, it's always his North Carolina-clique friends who get the axe instead of him.

I'm sad to see Shelton go, but I think maybe he could kinda be Christian-like in TNA, that meaning "a former WWE star who we actually like in TNA." I think he could get over.

I'll miss Mickie too, but she seems to have a good plan ahead for her.

I'm sure we have more cuts coming. I'm not too worried with Santino, since WWE spent money filming that comedy series or whatever with him, Beth, and Koslov. That said, Koslov might be safe too. Santino has a bit of a following, too. With this, I'd say the NXT mentors should be safe at least until the end of this NXT season.

Short list of names I'd be worried to have in the next few days: Alicia Fox, Yoshi Tatsu (not sure if they believe in him), Zack Ryder, Curt Hawkins, Goldust (as always, sadly), Tony Atlas, and... maybe Jim Ross? It's hard to tell what's going on with him from his blogs.

I believe...
*WWE's desire to maintain diversity will save Fox
*That Funaki was released b/c the same diversity-inspired roster spot that he held now belongs to Yoshi (who should also be fine)
*Ryder might be safe as a JTTS
*even Hawkins might be surprised he still works there so he should be nonplussed to get his pink slip,
*you can cut Goldust and watch him gain 400lbs but he'll lose it the moment you need him back

Meltzer was recently on Sherdog saying JR's contract ends on the 30th and he's thinking MMA, but is unsure about it and whether the stigma of pro wrestling will give companies pause when it comes to giving him a chance.
