Wow, this is very cool. Sam Zien, a local TV cooking guy from San Diego, has gotten a national show on Discovery Health.

Please set your TiVo or DVR (or VCR) to record this and give him a chance. He's pretty funny, and I hope they let that come through in his new show.

Honestly it sounds like more of the same junk the Food Network is throwing out there these days. Cooks, not chefs, who claim to be all about "simple" meals and making it "easy", but who rarely provide any real knowledge and usually don't do enough to actually describe what it is they did do. I'm just guessing, but considering the guy has zero actual training and just wanted to be on tv I'd figure this to be more of the same stuff I already don't want to watch.

Maybe he's different but I'm tired of this type of thing. Give me Molto Mario or Alton any day, where I actually learn.

Well, let's see here now. On one hand, we have the opinion of a guy who has watched him in the past and hasn't made a whole lot of recommendations, nor made them lightly. On the other hand, we have a guy who's seen zero episodes (let me know if I'm wrong) but DID visit a website to formulate his Opinion. I wonder who I should give more credence to when making my own decision. I wonder. Hmmmmmmm.

Sam the Cooking Guy is the best. I've watched many of his shows on Channel 4 and usually get a good laugh out of every one of them. Watch the show a few times before raking the guy over the coals. I'm sure most people will enjoy the show.

Eh I formulated my opinion by being greatly annoyed over the last few years as actual chefs disappear and are replaced by the Rachel Rays of the cooking world. So when I saw this guy had zero experience or training with cooking it turned me off immediately. Could be hilarious but I'll stick with like comedy shows for my comedy and watch cooking shows for the cooking.

Maybe he's fun and I hope you like him and all the success, best wishes, blah blah blah. Wasn't trying to influence others.

Sam's cool with me , and i ccok for a living. Someone doesn't need to go to culinary school to know how to make good food. And being on camera requires a certain charisma and drive that not everyone has.
As far as eating out goes, for every "chef" , there are several COOKS actually making your food.

As much as I love Alton Brown, and although I acknowledge that he graduated from the New England Culinary Institute, nobody in the cooking industry would call him a chef, including himself. The title of Chef is properly reserved for those who run a professional kitchen, which, to my knowledge, Alton never has. There are also those with serious cooking backgrounds who find that Alton's "molecular gastronomy" approach is over-thinking.

"Zero experience or training with cooking?" does not get you a TV show. I may not like Rachel Ray very much, but the woman grew up around food and cooking. And while I do not personally find her cooking or her manner very appealing, that doesn't mean other people don't or shouldn't (just please, please, please, remove EVOO from the lexicon...).

For well-earned cooking snobbery, see the books of Anthony Bourdain (Kitchen Confidential and The Nasty Bits). At the same time, I still like Jamie Oliver no matter how many stripes Bourdain peels off of him.

Cooking show snobbery about "training and experience" from someone who is not displaying any cooking credentials himself is a little bit trite, don't you think? "But nobody's giving me a cooking show," might be your argument. Obviously Sam impressed somebody enough to give him one; and it's apparently been very successful for quite some time.

"Sam the Cooking Guy" is a great show because it is very genuine. He shoots it in his home kitchen, which is just like a kitchen you or I might have. He doesn't use $500 knives or $2000 appliances - you don't have to go down to a cooking supply store to begin to approach what he's doing.

One of his dogs might run through the shot looking for something to eat. When he has to go into the fridge for something, he fights the camera off so that they can't see into his messy fridge. I don't know how to explain the running gags - but it comes off as very genuine. Sam is a nice guy - I'm not even going to qualify that with "seems like a nice guy".

If you are expecting to get a lesson from a Top Chef when you tune in, you are probably going to be disappointed. Instead of going to a cooking institute, Sam has learned from the people he has met on his travels (like when he went to New Zealand and learned how to make authentic pub food) and from studying on his own. I hardly think this disqualifies him from making food - especially from making food that I might be able to also cook.

It's nice to watch food porn occasionally and see a Chef do something amazing with $10k worth of equipment, 2 sous chefs and more time to dedicate to an appetizer than I have to dedicate to the entire meal. If that's what you are hoping for, you are going to be disappointed. Watching Sam's show has always been like hanging out with a friend in the kitchen while they make something.

Anyway I hope Discovery allows his personality to come through. I'm pulling for you Sam!

PS> I also hope they let him keep the VH1 Pop-up video style commentary.

Found it - "Just Cook This! With Sam the Cooking Guy" listed as Thursdays on DHC at 8 & 8:30 Eastern (with a replay 8 & 8:30 Pacific) beginning THIS Thursday (9/6). You know it can't compete with NFL Opening Night, but I'll get it on the DVR, so you better not be letting me down. ;-)

I caught the last 10 minutes of the first episode and the full second episode.

This was very close to his old show, so I wasn't disappointed. He definitely has a little more money being thrown his way in the graphic production department - I'm not sure that I like the new ones better, but they are still fun.

All of the burger replacement recipes looked good I think I'm going to try to make the lamb ones.

Not a bad show at all. Mrs. Brick loved it.

The lamb burgers are basically Kefta (a Moroccan meatball) if you aren't a fan of feta cheese, add an egg to the mix (since ground lamb can easily get too dry) and some Cinnamon and cumin to spice it up.

One question, are all of his dishes this simple, or will he work his way into some more challanging meals?

in lebanon, they're called kibbeh. I like to mix veal and lamb with spices to make real good burgers/meatballs. the veal is lean and balances out the gaminess of the lamb.

from what i've seen, sam makes stuff just about anyone can cook with items from the local store, without having to search for it.of course nowdays, most ralphs, albertsons and vons are super-supermarkets, so you can find almost anything.

You should email him to ask him.

He may call you Frank, though.

*Ok, so he called me Frank the one time I emailed him. He then sent me a second email 5 minutes later apologizing for calling me Frank. Apparently it is the name of one of his boys friends, who was over at the house when he was writing the response.

Also, he took about a month to get back to me, and that was when he was just on local TV.

My initial reactions:

I don't have ADD. This show may have been edited by someone who does, however.

All the recipes did look delicious and easy and maybe I can get Kim to try them. (Maybe I'll try them - the tuna burger looked the most intriguing to me, but the Asian chicken thighs also looked like they'd be pretty good.)

For a one camera show, it's pretty neat.

I can see why Aaron likes it - there were more than a couple times where Kim and I said "if Aaron had a show, that's exactly how his delivery would be."

My DVR is having problems distinguishing "new" shows on Discoery Health so we'll just tape them all and weed out the duplicates later. I do like it!

Don't be fooled. "Sam the Cooking Guy" is not genuine at all. I have met him and seen him cook and watched him deal with people. He is above them... super fake, very selfish. It's all about himself. He does shoot in his home kitchen and basically makes crap that is easy to copy. Also, quite unsanitary - goes to the bathroom and doesn't wash up before he starts again... so gross.

Sam "seems like a nice guy" is right... but don't be fooled. He's quite self important.

Let's analyze this post, shall we?

Stated location: Carmel Valley, CA.
IP actually from: xxxxxxxxxx.dsl.sndg02.sbcglobal.net (redacted for your privacy). Hmm... San Diego... sndg... Sam's from San Diego...

Search term used to access the site: "sam" "cooking guy" national

So you weren't really honest about where you are, you went looking for people talking about Sam's show, and you pretty much jumped in attacking him right away.

Sounds like a credible person who doesn't have an agenda to me! Please, tell me more.

I want to know (not really) how theword knows that Sam doesn't wash his hands in the bathroom. Don't they have doors in his house? :-)

They may have an agenda, but that doesn't mean they can't also be credible. The true test will be to see if they come back or not. (Also applies to the other new user who showed up and registerd after theword presumably emailed this thread to them.)

Let's be honest, we've already seen him not wash his hands twice after rubbing on his dogs (along with post-production disclaimer graphic to that effect), so it wouldn't be THAT much of a leap to graduate to not washing your hands EVER (despite saying something like "must have washed [his] hands six thousand times" in reassuring manner after playing with the raw chicken)

Also, throwing out the IP information is a dirty admin trick. You don't know whether SBC correctly ID's their routers in the Monterey area or not! And neither do I. Besides, maybe they're on vacation in the SD area. There are lots of explanations. I'm not so sure that's worthy of use in an attack response. I mean, why not go straight to "why do you hate Jews?" (Or, substitute "Canadians" if that offends you. Hell, even "Canadian Jews!")

If you were REALLY bored, you'd go see where else they posted. Surely if they found US through a web search, there are other boards that came up through the same search...? (Or maybe not - we're the #1 hit with those terms. GO TEAM W)

Only found one: http://www.43things.com/entries/view/1344309

In short: welcome to The W! Hope you're sticking around and not just registering to make one post and then never come back ever, because that makes me feel like a failure.

Well, I did find the other hit, and I went back to check the Discovery Health forums to see if they were there as well. Then I thought better about obsessing over this and moved on
//edit: The real dirty admin trick would have been going into their choice of password, which is pretty telling.

Why do I care how much he watches his hands, anyway? I'm not actually eating his food, I'm just watching him cook and learning his recipes--don't see how I'm in danger of catching anything from that!

I remember the Commando Cody serials from MST3K, as they would riff on one of the episodes in addition to the movie they were watching. They didn't even get to the final episode, so I got a cliffhanger.
