Remember when wrestling was by region?

They still operate pretty much like that. Each region has champions. Then there in the national tier and the world tier. All members recognize the world tier.

Anyways, if I remember correctly, it was nearly the same way in the 80's as the NWA was being transitioned into WCW. Over lapping titles and such. I guess that is why the National title was originally unified with the US championship in mid 80's.

yeah. the national title was the top belt in Georgia. The US title was the top belt in Mid-Atlantic.

When JCP merged the two companies, the national belt became superfluous.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the WWF title with the blue strap that Vince presented to Austin the night after WM XIV didn't last that long. After he won the title back from Kane after KOTR that year, he switched to the Smoking Skull belt and when he lost that and they had the tournament at Survivor Series, the belt they had there was like the classic winged eagle belt, but a lot bigger. That's the one they went with until they brought in the undisputed belt.

The winged title used from 1987-1998:

Welcome home, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard! Good luck to those down south.

The "blue strap" title and the title used from Survivor Seris '98 until 2002 only had two differences: the color of the leather, and the type of WWF logo.

The main and side plates were generally the same on both belts. But if you look closely, Kane's "blue strap" has the old-school WWF block logo. (You can also see good examples of this on the inside cover of that "Steve Austin's Stone Cold Metal" CD that WWF had a hand in putting out several years ago...actually a good collection.)

By the time they brought back that same design for the Survivor Series '98 belt, the WWF had switched to the now-banned scratch logo.

I thought that the winged WWF title debuted at WMIV? I know for a fact that Hogan carried the 85 to Feb 88 belt into the Main Event match with Andre where he lost it.

You might be right. Here's Hogan leaving WrestleMania III after pinning Andre and retaining the WWF title in '87.

Clearly, that belt is the Reggie Parks creation commonly known as "the Hogan 86." (I just lost an eBay auction on a Dave Millican version...dammit!)

One year later, Savage wins the belt in the tourney, and throws it and Elizabeth over his shoulder. Hello, Winged Eagle!

I don't think the "winged" belt debuted at WMIV, but it was pretty close to it. I believe there are photos of Andre with the winged belt when he beat Hogan on the Main Event in the twin Hebner scheme. So that would put the winged belt era from early '88 (February maybe?) to early '98 when Austin won it at WM XIV. A pretty good run for a championship belt.

edit: I guess I am wrong. I was searching for pics of Andre with the winged belt and all the sites mention that he won the "Hogan 86 belt" on the Main Event. But there are pictures of him with the winged belt. Maybe he snagged it after some matches with Savage in '88?

Do a YouTube search for Hogan Andre Main Event (or words to that effect) and you'll see Hogan wearing the winged belt, Andre winning the winged belt and Andre presenting to DiBiase, you guessed it, the winged belt.

That's the controversial match where Hogan's first, four years, reign as champion ended.

In those four years the belt changed twice not counting the championship he originally won from Sheik.

OK, right you are. From this YouTube copy of the match on 5 Feb 88:

Hogan, the defending WWF champ, comes out wearing the Winged Eagle.

You know how this turns out. Andre wins the controversial decision and the WWF title...

...and immediately surrenders the title to Ted DiBiase.

All Winged Eagle, all the time. Although...if Andre would've won at 'Mania III (and in his autobiography, Hogan says it took Vince a long time to decide), wasn't he supposed to have worn this custom-made super-sized belt?
