Very good point. I'm sure that's probably the case.

I wouldn't necessarily say that the 'E is punishing the Canadian fans. We are all some pretty intelligent people here but we truly do not know what Vince and Co is thinking at this point. This was all probably a knee-jerk reaction to the events of the weekend and I wouldn't look at it much more than that.

It was said earlier that Vince coming out may not be a good idea but I think that this form of "damage control" may put the casual fan at ease. I personally applaud him for doing it and effectively aborting the "whodunnit" storyline in the process.

I think that things like cutting the schedule down drastically to pretty much TV and PPV with a house show a week is certainly more than sufficient instead of rotating rosters every quarter. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to brands taping their shows in the same arena on the same night like they did way back in the day. By my math, going from 300-325 dates a year to 100-120 is huge, keeps the athletes healthy.

I apologize for the rambling (I apologized last night as well) nature of this post. I really wanted to pick my words carefully.

WWE timeline of events, including text message transcripts:

afternoon, July 23- Benoit informs WWE that his wife and son are ill, and he will need to miss the scheduled house show that night in Beaumont, TX. WWE arranges new travel schedule to get Benoit to Houston for Vengence, but can't get in touch with him

Sunday morning, between 3:51 and 3:58 am, 5 text messages sent to unidentified co-workers:

Message 1, sent 3:53 am to 2 people from Chris Benoit's phone: "My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane, Fayetteville Georgia"

Message 2, sent 3:53 am to 2 people from Chris's cell phone: "The dogs are in the enclosed pool area, Garage side door is open"

Message 3, sent 3:54 am to 2 people from Nancy's phone, repeats Message 1, as do Message 4 sent to 2 people from Nancy's phone at 3:55am, and Message 5, sent to 1 person from Nancy's phone at 3:58

WWE officials, having tried, and failed to contact Benoit all Sunday, were notified of the text messages at 12:30 Monday afternoon, and they asked Fayettville police to do a "welfare check". WWE was notified that the Benoit family was deceased--and that the home was considered a "major crime scene"--around 4, and the decision to cancel Raw was made by 5.

As for the aftermath:

In keeping with company policy, and with limited knowledge regarding facts of the case, WWE choose to air a memorial dedicated to the career of Chris Benoit. As facts emerged surrounding the case, all tributes to Chris Benoit were removed both on-air and on WWE.com.

For reasons of creative incompetence, this space will be left blank. Advertising opportunities are avaliable though!!! Contact (Number removed due to pending litigation) for details!

The following message from Vince McMahon aired at the beginning of tonight's ECW on Sci Fi:

Last night on Monday Night Raw, the WWE presented a special tribute show, recognizing the career of Chris Benoit. However, now some 26 hours later, the facts of this horrific tragedy are now apparent. Therefore, other than my comments, there will be no mention of Mr. Benoit tonight. On the contrary, tonight's show will be dedicated to everyone who has been affected by this terrible incident. This evening marks the first step of the healing process. Tonight, the WWE performers will do what they do better than anyone else in the world--entertain you.

I found that very interesting. Vince appeared pretty pissed off when he said that. It shook me that he used "Mister" instead of "Chris" the second time -- but then again it makes sense, and further serves the goal of distancing WWE from Benoit. Smart move IMO.

Just read the timeline of the text messages. Is it just me or do those messages look like someone giving people instuctions on how to get to/into his house without his dogs attacking them? I have read where Chavo recieved a text but I can't figure out what that information would mean anything to him for...

If these messages are real this may get more weird as it goes on....

Yes, of course, that's the point. He sent the messages to whoever so that they could call the police and provide an address to check on.

This doesn't necessarily mean the murders were premeditated, but it DOES mean that he was at least enough in his right mind before taking his own life to let people know how to find the bodies.

The general feeling is Benoit sent those messages to let people know where to find him, and to encourage them to do so.

To me the messages sound like a guy who wanted to be stooped. He wanted to be caught but when no one came he just gave up. Why do I get the feeling that Benoit was
Suffering from depression? If what Torch says is true then in his way he was saving his family? I can't and really don't want to know what went throw his mind then. By the look of it ,it wasn't a nice place.

What if he had a mental illness? Or was under the influence of drugs? Or had a brain tumour? Or was suffering brain damage as long-term effects from a series of concussions? Is he still evil?

Understand that I'm not saying this is definitely the case. But I can't see a person in his right mind doing what Benoit did. If it's revealed that there was something wrong with him - well, obviously there was SOMETHING - but... you know what I mean. If there was a medical condition or something, would he still be thought of as evil? Would we be finally able to watch old Benoit matches with the same mixture of sad and happy memories that we might watch Eddie Guerrero matches with?

I'm not trying to be a dick and not really talking to you specifically - just getting this out there.

I'm not discounting that and if something was ill with him, then that's another story. I'm just saying that we, as a society, tend to try and rationalize the irrational. We want to make sense of things because we (as rational human beings, by and large) can't comprehend doing what Chris Benoit did. So we search for something outside to confort us. A bad upbringing. Drugs. Tumour. Concussions. It's easier to believe that Benoit just went crazy because of chair shots than saying he was 'evil' and planned this.

We even doing it now, saying that because of the text messages he wanted to be stopped, but what if he did this because he wanted to send some 'sick' message that only meant sense to him? I know the pressures of raising a child that isn't 'normal' but not everyone ties up their wife and chokes them with an electrical cord. Not every wrestler, who takes steroids, feels the need to fly home, confront their wife and kill his family, then hang himself.

Justin made the point how it was cold that the WWE wanted to distant themselves from him (valid), but what's cold is killing your 7-yr old son after you've bound and choke your wife. I mean, steroids, mental illness, all that stuff, he's a murderer. The 'Chris Benoit' character that we saw on TV seems like it was just as real as the Boogeyman or the Undertaker.

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

Well, Fragile X syndrome is, at least, some kind of explaination for this tragedy. Raising a severely developmentally disabled child has been known to push people right over the edge - I believe one of the other murder/suicides AWArules had a link to also involved an autistic child. I wouldn't want to be confused for defending his actions, but this all seemed so senseless, and it actually helps to be able to say that there was a reason (however unreasonable) for what he did.

Look, I realize that this story has turned really bad, but is it really necessary to punish the Calgary and Edmonton fans by association?
Fuck you, WWE. I had tickets for the Edmonton show. I was really looking forward to it, too.

Concerning Benoit's past work: I own the Hard Knocks DVD...and I'm still going to watch it. I'm not going to throw it out, and yell "damn you to hell" for what he did. I still celebrate his success as a wrestler, and I still love his work, even though he did what he did.

A thought occured: could his status in WWE have anything to do with it? Without actually accusing McMahon or the planning/whatever committee, check this out:

1: he was on Raw, which is the "A" show.
2: he was drafted to the "B" show, Smackdown;
3: he was now drafted the the "C" show, ECW, which is pretty much the bastard stepchild of WWE programming.

He slid pretty low on the old totem pole, it seems.

Now, I don't know what they were planning with Benoit (I read he was going to be a mentor/tutor/teacher for those involved) but was he slated to win the ECW title in his match against CM Punk?

EDIT: additional thoughts

True, NONE of us Knew Chris Benoit the Father, Husband, and man. We knew that guy who was on our TV every week for 10 min. Eather way Benoit is a murderer. He did some thing that I would like to hope no of us would ever do. I don't like it when I make my wife cry I can't see how doing what he did is right.

Mabe in his Mind benoit was saing them. but you don't save some one by killing them.

.....

The more i learn about this the more I wish he was alive so he can rot in jail. I know I am not helping and I might be making things worse so I am just going to sit back and enjoy my family as we all should.

Peace out all.

There's no way they run a show in Benoit country until they weather the storm here. Right now they don't need the extra press and the Benoit family and their friends don't need the circus coming to town so soon after all of this.

I'm sure they will make it up to you.

I don't think it's a knee-jerk reaction at all. Chris Benoit has become the professional wrestling equivalent of O.J., only worse if anything, worse because a handicap child was involved. They are going to be shit on by just about everyone in the media for having this guy as an employee because they are the WW(F) and that's just what the media loves to do to them.

They are distancing themselves from Benoit because they need to. He strangled his wife to death, then smothered his autistic child a few hours later. The last thing I'm sure they want (or need) is to have a show in Edmonton/Calgary and give the media all the shots they need of fans holding signs saying "We forgive you Chris" and the like. And we've all been to wrestling shows live. You *know* some jackass will bring (or make while there) a sign that says it was Nancy's fault in some way that's supposed to be "funny" to him and his friends. Even a 2 second shot on tv could haunt them for months.

I'm sure they'll be back. But I don't blame them at all for not wanting to take any chances for the next while. If you want to blame anyone for the Edmonton and Calgary shows being cancelled, you're going to have to blame Chris. He's put them in a position where the company is about to get the worst press it's gotten since the steriod trials. Maybe worse, I don't know. Given how many reporters are going to be looking to cash in on this at their expense, I really don't see how they have any choice.

That does explain why his facial features looked so odd in the pictures used on RAW. It also explains some of the stress Benoit might have been experiencing - and keeping inside (a support network would have been of tremendous value).

It still doesn't excuse what happened, though.
