Well that sucks. I hah kinda hoped the 'family was poisoned and Benoit couldn't handle it' theory would pan out. My Benoit DVD set will be going on craigslist's 'free stuff' list soon since I don't think I want it anymore.

Finally signed up after years of lurking on the board...

...just wondering, I know this topic was put to bed over a year and a half ago, but after Eddie died, there was a short blurb about a wrestler being put on "death watch" -- you don't think it could have been Benoit all along, do you?

Just something random to pass the time while waiting for the press conference to start...

I think we can also say this is a sad, sad situation, but I think, in light of the evidence of the commonality of this offense, that it is not a symptom of wrestling, but that the offender just happened to work in that

The thing is, people are going to be looking at wrestling and steroids as a scapegoat to help them understand this. I think it's a psychological thing -- people need something simple that they can blame for something like this. Saying "It's steroids" allows them to continue to ignore real-world domestic violence that happens every day.

It doesn't help that wrestling has a history of high-profile self-destructive behavior (Steve Austin, Randy Orton, Jake Roberts).

I recall the consensus being that it was Angle.

This is terrible. Woefully inadequate statement, I know, but that's all I can muster. A gifted athlete, a mother, and a young child all at once. It's beyond understanding and reckoning to me right now.

If someone wouldn't mind, can we have a brief rundown of the press conference? My stupid cable is broken at the moment and Pipeline never works well on this PC for whatever reason. Thanks.

The briefing is held outside the Benoit home:

+ Asphyxiation for cause of death for all; she died Friday, son died Saturday morning, Benoit died sometime Sunday.

+ Steroids found in house seem to all be from legal prescriptions; toxicology report pending.

+ No suicide note.

+ DA explains his "bizarre" comment from before by saying the timing of the deaths was bizarre, as was the death of a seven-year-old; Bibles were found next to Daniel and Nancy's bodies.

+ Nancy was bound by the feet, possibly at the hands. Some blood found under her head.

+ Previous 2003 documents of divorce and assault and their dismissals are mentioned.

+ Daniel found in his bedroom, she was in a family room, Benoit found in basement weight room.

+ Benoit hung himself with weighted pulleys.

+ Investigation still pending at home.

Fox news is blaming Steriods, Shepard Smith has some dude speaking about the effects of roid rage.

Vince may suffer even if roids were legal.

I just can't understand how anyone can kill a seven year old, much less THEIRS. I highly doubt he was rationally thinking and had a normally functioning brain. All the evidence could only lead to the conclusion he was a highly disturbed guy with mental issues that lost his mind.

The latest news conference sickened me. He obviously had this whole thing pre meditated from the start. The calling out of work, the fact he tied her hands and feet together and struck her in the back of the head, etc. Then the bibles..

The WWE really needs to change, and in a hurry. They can't keep sweeping things like this under the rug. It's not specifically their fault, but the lifestyle of these wrestlers and the fact they're on the road 300 days a year can't be a good thing.

Technically everyone's steroids are legal. They all have prescriptions. It's no surprise that all of Benoit's drugs are prescription; that's the willful ignorance of the whole Wellness Policy. The grisly details are grisly as hell but the word "steroids" seems to be what the media is jumping on so this is going to blow up.

I was waiting for this type of response...

This reminds me of all those who swore off "Seinfeld" after Michael Richards went on his rant last year. Did Richards' tirade change how funny reruns of "Seinfeld" are?

Does this change how great an in-ring performer Benoit was?

Forgive me if I'm crude, but I don't like watching a guy on my TV and continuously thinking "that guy killed his family." No performer is good enough for that to not bother me.

I really was going to refrain from replying to anyone in this thread ... but don't you think that's comparing apples to oranges?

Seriously, a racist guy versus a guy who killed his wife and kid? A world of difference, no?

Unless you have proof that Richards donned a hood and participated in a lynching, they are NOT the same thing ...

Does this sound like a man who was right in the head? He was an ok guy for years, and suddenly he starts killing people?

Wait for the toxicology report. Wait for the autopsy. My bet is that something was seriously and legitimatly messed up in his head, and when he killed his family he didn't know what in the hell he was doing.

My guess is that when he came to, realized what he'd done, he went and said prayers over his wife and child (hence the bibles) and then killed himself.

Fact is we may never know what happened in there this past weekend, but there is no need to assume that a guy that has been a pillar of the wrestling community for years was rationally and sanely planning on killing people all along.

Wait.

No, I don't believe it does.

But many people will no longer be able so much as see an image of Chris Benoit now without thinking, "that man ended the lives of his wife and his seven year-old son." Some people may someday be able to find some distance, others never will. Some folks may even find themselves more able to forget what has happened this past weekend by immersing themselves in his oeuvre. Everyone is different and personal reactions to this tragedy are likely to vary widely.

As for the rest of all of this, I have no words for it or how it makes me feel.

The WWE needs him to draw ratings; Mick needs them to sell books. Works out pretty well in the short term. Long term though, the last thing the product needs is more non-wrestling/GM types running around.
