While it's a bad decision to boldly declare that the mechanism through which Veramyst works isn't understood, it's not uncommon in the least. A huge number of drugs/medicines are not understood fully and most of what we know about them is just empirical evidence which is not matched up with any rock solid analytical theory. Without looking anything up the few I can recall are metformin (for diabetes treatment), risperdal (along with pretty much any drug which affect mental disorders), and good ol' caffiene (which has been fairly well figured out, but still has some big gaps to fill in).

Funny side story, my girlfriend took a medicinal chemistry course and the final project was to choose a class of drugs and discuss their history, structure, mechanism, etc. A friend of ours chose chose to discuss a drug (can't remember what it was) which has an unknown mechanism of action and thus totally failed the project and had complete a second, much more involved study during the summer.

I have a client that has to stamp something to the effect of "we know this works but it is not FDA-approved" on their meds. We always thought that was kind of funny, but then we went to their show (Digestive Disease Week - bring the whole family! and it seemed like EVERY exhibitor had that disclaimer on their product. (That and they were all #1 according to themselves.) It was pretty eye-opening how many products were out there that apparently didn't have approval from the FDA.

I don't know if that is a big deal of not, but the fact that you have to disclaim it at least makes it appear so.

If you know, did the friend pick the drug to be a smart ass and try to get an "easy A" or did they truly not know that there was an unknown mechanism until they did the research.

I was surprised about that at first. My dad was a biochemist and he let me in on how tough it was to get FDA approval. Something like seven to ten years, IIRC.

If you watch closely, ads for stuff like Stacker (back in the day) and just about any diet pill will have a FDA disclaimer. Most Dietary Supplements have that disclaimer too.

My GF wants me to take Echinacea as a preventative and got me a bottle of Trader Joe's Echinacea and it has the standard FDA disclaimer on the bottle. In short, it "is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."

It was more of a case of not quite understanding the project, and never discussing this hugely important project with the professor or anybody else in the class before presenting it and handing it in. This person is also somebody who once woke up after a hard night's drinking for cross country practice, got dressed, warmed up, and stretched out before realizing that his left ear with filled with dried ketchup and mustard. Completely in character.

Take a placebo.

Study Says Echinacea Has No Effect on Colds (NYTimes)

Unfortunately, I am surrounded by plenty of people who are into these "alternative" health cures. While I don't want to dismiss all of them out of hand, I am relatively certain that things like Echinacea and the ever-popular Airborne do little to actually prevent colds. They are not anti-virals, so...

What's more likely is these products make people feel better in general - either for placebo-like reasons or relating to things that are entirely unrelated to the actual cold.

There was a Veramyst ad in this week's Sports Illustrated.

When I saw it today eating lunch, I chuckled.

You mean crazy people?

I had a pharmacist friend tell me half the pills they produce don't do shit and that it's mostly mind over matter. If you take, say, Allopurinol for Gaut, like I'm supposed to do; it's a waste a money. Those are basically water pills. He told me to just pop Advil and save the money.

Actually, he's told to just take Advil for a lot of stuff.
