The Google Maps API key used on this web site was registered for a different web site. You can generate a new key for this web site at http://www.google.com/apis/maps/.
I then go to that Web site and get a blank white space where it seems like a map should be. The same happens when I click on "The W...orld" ink above. | CRZ

What version of Safari are you using? I tried with 2.0 and it worked okay, but I don't think I have the version you're using.

We have it set to http://the-w.com/maps/ as the root directory (don't click, you can't see anything there) but some of you are accessing the site from http://www.the-w.com/ and apparently not getting rewritten by our apache mojo which is supposed to fix all of that.
So... if you are one of these people... remove the "www" from your bookmark and then load the page. It should work then.
Obviously it would be better if I put a check in for the URL and then registered a second key for the other URL. I may get around to doing that, there are a lot of examples of how to do this on the Google API discussion boards.
Supposedly this will really start to slow down as we get more data points. At 95 points, it still seems usable to me. I think it is loading in about .5 seconds right now - maybe 1 second. I'd like to see what happens around 400 points...
Maybe I should post an announcement.

But this business about "don't put your real location in case someone tracks you down" is ridiculous. They can find you already. If they can't find you using free information, then they can use one of those public records things (this one says it will let me get every person with a certain name in a state for $7.95). Whiterpages.com has me in it. Maybe you have an unlisted number and it doesn't list you, I don't know. But if someone really wants to, (and crazy people have nothing but time) they'll find you.

Maybe you should start the trend, then, of putting your home address in your signature, along with your phone number and real name. That way, people don't have to use one of those public record things and drop $8 to find you, or use them there whiterpages.com. Come to think of it, move your locator flag to where you actually live, instead of it being in the middle of an intersection, to make it easier to find you if someone wants to.
Or would that be ridiculous also?

Hell, anyone who knows my name can go to http://www.zabasearch.com and find each of my last 4 addresses and old phone numbers. Honestly, the only reason I wouldn't want to post that info is to make it less easy for identity theft. At least make someone do 2 minutes hard searching to get all my info. But really, if I'm going to get a psycho stalker who wants to come kill me, this is really one of the last places I would expect that to happen.

Plus, just in case some kid lies about his/her age, I still have a hope that they wouldn't put their real location up before telling someone else to come and attack them.
Plus, I really don't care EXACTLY where you are - I just want to see the national level, really. It's nice to see the neighborhood level, I guess - but the overall picture for me is the world view / US view.
