Has Spike ever made it into ANY of these Smackdown games? How long has he been in the company and he's never been on the active roster for any of these games? Poor guy. Interesting that Hurricane has been left off the list, too.

He was in the following to my knowledge...

SD!:Just Bring It (the first WWE(F)game for PS2)
SD!: Shut Your Mouth(PS2)
RAW 1 (X-Box)
RAW 2 (X-Box)

You must be happier then a pig in sh*t being able to see Spike every week on SD! as Cruiserweight champ now huh?

Create a belt does nothing for me but I'm still eager with anticipation for its arrival on these here shores.

The heel/face thing has been ok so far, but I've yet to get the meter all the way up to see what I can do with it. Just having the option to not let go of a submission or put your feet on the ropes is fun though. Seems much easier to get the meter up while being a heel.

I've only played three matches but the first had a chop contest and the last had us do a shoving match to start. It was ok, but I had no clue how to win since they left that part out of the instructions so it was just push the buttons and hope for the best. I think it's a nice feature though.

Submissions aren't impossible but damn that sure is a lot of button tapping to make sure they tap out. At least it was for me. But then again since I'm playing other actual people online maybe they're just hitting buttons faster than I am.

Doesn't seem to lag much at all while I'm playing so that's a very good sign, but then again there haven't been a ton of people on the servers yet.

I do hope that the legends have at least their entrance music this time, although I wonder if Andre the Giant ever had ring music. Also, I don't really mind there being fewer wrestlers, since a lot of them were useless in the last game unless you ran them through season mode once or twice. It should be a fun game!

I'm going to pass or wait till it goest down in price. It just sounds like the exact same game as Smackdown 6, even the legends are mostly the same. Whenever PS3 comes out next year or the year after, the Smackdown games should just be expansions instead of core games. I'd rather pay $30-40 on an expansion with new characters, entrace, music and CWA than $50 on another watered down game. I am very disappointed in this game.

WMtastic's beta testing spoilers not withstanding, THQ made it official (ps2.ign.com): Smackdown Vs. Raw will be online for Single Player Exhibition matches.

If my current NFL 2K5 obsession can lure me into getting a network adapter, then this game may be worth at least a rental...

Yeah I was wondering about the modes allowed online, because they only are letting us test one on one matches. Just plain or bra and panties.

But it's been working really well, and you can use created wrestlers and created belts and stuff so it could be a fun new way to do an efed I guess if you're into that sort of thing.

You, sir, have just made me a happy man. I was concerned that you couldn't use CAWs, but that you can -- and you can defend created belts online! -- is NICE.

Can't wait to see the first 'dojo destroyer' type who runs around online collecting massive amounts of created belts from his fallen enemies...

From the IGN previews about CAW, I think the only ways they could completely drop the ball are:

1. Female CAWs can't be given any weight class other than Diva, or
2. Like last year, all CAWs are weak as kittens unless you spend 20+ hours in story mode with every single one you make.

Number two there was a royal pain. If you're only gonna make one CAW it's fine, but what about a dozen of them? An entire e-fed? No way in hell. At that point you need a gameshark very badly just to set reasonable stats for them (not all 10's, just something better than all 5's)

I couldn't agree more about what a pain the limit on created wrestlers was in Here Comes the Pain. It severely limited my enjoyment of what was an otherwise great improvement in the series.

Having to run through multiple seasons just to build up enough points for created wrestlers so you could...run them through the seasons you've already had to go through? Bad idea, and it ended up making this the first game in the series where I didn't have a lot of fun with CAW mode since the original game, where you had to make Kurt Angle out of Shane McMahon's head and Mark Henry's body. Kept me from making what, at the time Here Comes the Pain came out last fall, was to be the most important character who needed to be added to the game: Cybernetic Shane McMahon (w/ Battle Damage). The only CAW I ended up making was true video-lucha legend Starman.

Since the game's Austin-Brock-and-Regal-less final roster (Bret Hart aside, which is impossibly awesome, especially if they really do have "Theme From Bret Hart" in the game) looks really weak, buying this year's installment was entirely dependent on whether they put online mode in. It's great that they've finally done it, but I hope that, as hinted in the above IGN article, they announce more online modes than plain one-on-one. Online SmackDown is practically screaming for some kind of Rumble (even limited to six at a time) and the hardcore time-limit match to be playable. Still, I'm looking forward to any other online PS2 game to go with football and Resident Evil: Outbreak, so we'll see.

I am wondering, though, how the game handles created players online. Do you have to download the CAWs to your memory card before a match? Or does the PS2 hold the CAW formula in its memory for the duration of the match? If it's the latter, it would be nice to have the option of saving someone's created wrestler if you go against someone that has a really good one. I bought one of those X-Port things last year to download created wrestlers from the Web (thanks to the stupid CAW attribute limit) and have never been able to get my PS2 to read the blue-bottom disc since buying it.

So I'm lost ... so is the CAW feature going to have that same points system?

Seems so. Alls I know is you don't have enough points to make a good Ultimo Guerrero with what they give you. The created points total - as well as the "season" normal guys that are selectable - are lower than the "exhibition" wrestlers.

You know I have a beta too? And I've barely played it? Misplaced priorities is all I've got to say. (That, and you want to learn how to do the cool things but since there's no practice/offline mood and the other guys is probably just going to pummel you if you fool around, it's a steeper learning curve than you'd like. Steeper than I'd like, at least.)

I hope they make the left (my mind has gone blank, let me see if this makes sense) digital joystick thingy works when they release the game. It's supposed to, but only the analog one works for me.

The heel/face stuff and the prematch confrontations are the nice touches you need to have in sports/pseudo-sports games like this to justify a new year. Haven't seen someone fill up that meter, but being able to argue 2 counts and attacking before the bell are the neat kind of things I liked.

Or does the PS2 hold the CAW formula in its memory for the duration of the match?

It seems to hold it in your PS2 memory for the time being. No option to save/steal it for yourself as far as I could see.

Remind me to drop how to signup for this thing when I shouldn't have left five minutes ago.

Well in the beta there happens to be an exploit we've all discovered to cheat your CAW up to whatever you want. Basically you can make a copy of him, edit the copy's stats to remove all points, then go back into your main one and the points are available to use there. Like the stats are pooled for all your created wrestlers. Cheap, and I don't expect it to be around in the final version but it's there now.

And hey Cubs, I figured out that you can use the stick control, but you have to change it in your game setup before going online. For some retarded reason the default control is joypad only.

I don't have time to make these CAWS. Jesus you can spend forever there. So I just made a nice replica of the Wicked Witch from Wizard of Oz and that's it so far. She's a high flyer of course.

But damnit everyone else made huge bulked up dudes for their CAWS and my bitch can't lift any of them for big slams or moves, but whatever. Guess that makes it more realistic or something.

That's the first I've read of being able to argue two counts. I'm guessing it's part of the "play like a heel" side of the heel/face meter they've added this year. Excellent. Does your wrestler actually do the "No, 1!2!3!" pantomime to the "No, 1..2..3!" counting ref? If they got that, they need to add the ability for bald heels to do the "he pulled my hair!" move at the ref next year. And of course, the "I want the belt!"

I do hope this will encourage online players to get into playing like their characters a bit. There's not much more fun in the current SD games than doing a Rumble as Flair and cowering around the ring as long as possible, then running up and hitting a groin shot when the opportunity presents itself. Whichever game in the series that had Hogan (I'm really having trouble remembering which of the two games before Here Comes the Pain had what) made a huge jump in adding all the little animation touches to the wrestlers that really made them a lot more fun to play.

The left stick for movement wasn't available a few games ago, so it wouldn't completely surprise me if they somehow forgot to put that in again, like they managed to forget adding a random entry choice in the Rumble two games ago, and then thankfully remembered to put it back in for Here Comes the Pain. I guess that's the sort of thing they'll depend on you beta testers to remind them.

As for the CAW points system, I recently read a preview, maybe an IGN one, that mentioned in passing buying them from the game's Shopzone. That's a compromise I could live with, and I think one that the pre-HCTP games had. It might have been the second one that offered extended Create points after going through the since abandoned "pre-season" mode, but one of them after that let you buy more points, which is really all I ask.

I can hold off having two Kanes and two Undertakers a little longer if it means being able to make a more statistically accurate Former NFL Megastar stable of Brock, Goldberg and Luger. You can probably make a pretty accurate Mongo with just the default attribute points, though. Oh, Mongo.

I haven't been able to pull it off yet, sadly. It's akin to the finisher stuff, where you have that quick stun moment to pull it off. This is another part where I'd love to have an even crippled single player mode so I can try it on my own, but that's not really the point of the demo.

It seems like anyone can do face/heel stuff, but it'll hurt the meter if you're a face and you do heel stuff and vice versa.

Here's a few of my beefs and a few questions about this game...

1) Bringing back commentary sucks. Asides from the repetetive crap, it also sucks when you're trying to use a created wrestler. Example: Playing as Scott Hall, I have to put up with the Cole saying "What a move by ...(pause)... Lone Wolf!" about a hundred times. It makes the CAWs seem less integrated into the game, and more like truly fake, created nobodies.

2) I like the idea of all the new things you can do, but from the videos of in-ring action, there's just too many meters flying around and popping up during a match. Kind of defeats the purpose of a chop battle if you're watching a meter swing back and forth during it like some kind of bowling game.

A few questions for the beta-testers:

Can you defend the belts in exhibition or just PPV?
Can you turn commentary OFF? Or at least prevent your CAW from being called something horrible?
And finally, do you HAVE to choose face or heel? What if I want to have a tweener-type match with wrestlers than can act both face and heel?

Smackdown vs Raw is the 6th installment in the Smackdown series by THQ -so its the same damn game as "Smackdown 6", its not just similar.

As to commentary, I don't know if you can turn it off because our beta doesn't have that part really in yet. There is no single player game available and not many options. Though I will say they allow you to pick from a decent list of names for the announcers to call your guy. Like if you pick Raw as your main brand, you get a list of JR terms like "hoss". So maybe that will help a bit.

The meters don't really bother me while playing.

We don't have the create a belt feature enabled either so I don't know what ways you can defend them.

Last, yeah there is a neutral option, rather than face or heel but I've yet to try it so I don't know how it works for your meter.
