My problem is the whole Annie character in TPM. His mom is a virgin slave? Annie is a slave who owns robots? I am pretty insulted by that since slavery is close to the most evil thing in human history.
Annakin should have been older by about 5 years. The actor should have been Haley Osmond or some other 12 year old with some actual talent. The kid was way too cute.
I understand that they were trying to make us like Anakin so when he becomes Vader it's that much cooler when he becomes evil. Oh and he should have just been poor and not a slave WHO OWNS A PROTOCAL DROID.
Cut out 75% of Anakins cuteness. Don't make him Jesus. Kill Jar Jar. And then cut down the pod race and you would have a much better movie.

I also just wanted to point out, when you include the Original Trilogy coming out on DVD this fall, a theatrical cut of Star Wars has NEVER been put on DVD. Not even for the prequel films.

Could it simply be that people expect too much from these movies because they had 20+ years to make their own little dream story about 'how it happened'? Not to mention numerous comics and books that contain only part of the 'truth' (according to Lucas. only his final version is final until he updates it)

I like the original trilogy but I hardly think it's brilliant. It's just that it became the stuff myths and legends are made of over the years.
Now he has to make something that is probably the most anticipated set of movies in history. He cannot ever live up to the anticipation & hype.
TPM was fun, AOTC was good (i like all the politics and secret agendas), now this new one..
I have high hopes it will rule simply because it works towards something we all wanna see..the birth of Vader.
I will not whine however if he doesn't do it the way I fantasized about all those years, like you know many will..

Revenge of the Sith is a great title btw. Totally in Return of the Jedi style, and fuck they have something to revenge..they got practically wiped off the map right?

Oh, and Dahak, he didnt own that bot, he BUILT it. I'd assume with scrap parts from the place he worked at. Plus, what exactly is wrong with having him be a slave?
And imo, the kid actor was average but having H.J.Osmend playing wouldn't have been good. The part itself was annoying, and I dont think it would fit Haley. His age? What difference would that make?
And that's the first time I have heard young Anakin described as cute. I thought he was an annoying young brat who had a big mouth for a freakin slave..

Oddly, I'm not even a fan but that's the title I thought they would use. This is the first I've heard of it being named (like I said, I'm not much of a fan). It does sound the best though and it's nice how the title ties in with the sixth one.

Ok, I'll give you the virgin slave thing...That was hokey.

But I don't see the part of a slave owning a robot. It's a matter of perspective. To us, a robot is a big deal. How many people do you know who have a robot?

In Star Wars robots are as common as toilets. It was established in TPM that Anakin was owned by Watto, a Junk Dealer. Anakin was privy to scraps of the junk yard and due to his amazing technical prowess, was able to construct a protocol droid. This would not be too unlike one of us constructing a kite out of some old sticks, twine, and some paper.

And I will give you the fact that slavery is one of the most evil things anyone has ever done. But that is a blanket statement and, once again, a matter of perspective.

When you have a society where slavery is the norm, then it's not that unusual for there to be a wide range of personality archetypes when it comes to the slave owner. Just how it was in real life, there are some slave owners that are more vile than other, and on the flip side, there are some who grant more liberties to the slaves.

In AotC, Watto admits that the slaves were just part of his business. So he probably sees them more like workers that aren't allowed to leave. He seemed to treat his slaves fairly well. On the flip side, Durga the Hutt probably did not.

Also, remember, that Cliegg Lars was a slaver. He bought Shimii from Watto and not only treated her very well, but married her.

So, although slavery in-and-of-itself is evil, a society that is groomed around it has a hard time seeing just how evil it is. And in turn CAN treat their slaves rather well (as well as a being a slave can get).

As far as the Jesus thing goes...Yeah, it's a bit ham fisted, but how else can you convey just how attuned to the Force this kid is? You can say, "His Midi-Choloian count is off the scale" (which they did), but that doesn't convey that Anakin is so powerful that he could be this Beacon of Good or a Weapon of Evil, so powerful, that he can literally make or break the galaxy.

I think that Lucas should have made that more apparent in AotC. Have a scene where Anakin has a small burst of anger (maybe at the Sandpeople camp) and the force swirls around him and throws everything in a 30 foot radius around him flying back. If I were Lucas, I would have had more to that scene. Have Anakin Force Choke a few Sandpeople, crush their helmets while still on their heads, Force slam one so hard into the sand that he literally gets buried, have some shots of him cutting down the women, then have the scene end when he walks into a tent that contains all the children; show an angry look on his face; cut to the outside of the tent where you can see the light from his sabre glowing through the front; have that light flicker several times as you add in the famous cutting sound FX of the sabre. Cue the Imperial March.

That would convey the capacity of power and evil this kid has. And the scene where he confesses to Padme would mean a heck of a lot more.

But, fleh, that's just a fan boy's dream.

Yeah, that is.

I think the reason Lucas hasn't had a scene like that is because Anakin hasn't truly attuned himself to his powers yet, nor unleashed his dark hatred. He's still grounded, mainly by the thoughts of Padme and Obi-Wan, and isn't about to go totally dark.

I think this scene is going to be a microcosm of what he'll do in Episode III. Except, instead of killing Tuskens, he'll be killing Jedi. This scene illustrates the whole fear (of losing his mother) leads to anger (angry at the Tuskens for taking her) leads to hatred (Anakin dehumanizes them) leads to suffering (a lot of dead Tuskens). It's the slippery slope. Before he knows it, he's moved on to killing people/weird aliens with long necks.

The Jedi have taught him restraint. The Tusken scene is where Anakin is just breaking through, but he's not quite there yet.

Bah, who said anything about Anakin's mom being a virgin? She did say that Anakin had no biological father, but that could simply have meant that she was a virgin when she gave birth to him-- or even, simply, that she didn't have sex during that particular period of time.

I agree that Episode I was, more or less, unmitigated tripe-- although I loved the lightsaber duel with Darth Maul. I actually kinda liked Episode II, though-- I think the only Star Wars movie that was undisputedly better was Empire Strikes Back.

I've got high hopes for Episode III, even knowing how dark it's going to be. Almost all the Jedi are going to die, but the movie, I'd guess, is likely to end with Luke and Leia being born-- thus providing hope that eventually, things are going to get better.

So, anyway. I'm looking forward to Episode III, and also to the release of the Original Trilogy DVD set-- Special Edition or no. As long as everyone keeps in mind that dammit, Han fired first.

On the subject of being a fanboy, this question just occured to me:

Which would you rather be immortalized as: George Lucas' vision of a young Darth Vader, or Sam Raimi's vision of Spider-Man?

This would've seemed like a ridiculous question to me six years ago. Today? Ridiculous, but for totally different reasons.

-Jag

Oh, and when I was thinking about how the new lightsaber duels blow away the old ones, I realized this: Spider-Man and Doc Ock are more bad-ass than any (movie version) superhero to date. Go watch their fight again, and just try to imagine Hugh Jackman's Wolverine versus Tobey's Spider-Man. Poor Wolvie.

concerning the acting in the prequels... On Mark and Brian (a synd raio show) they mentioned that they had heard Ewen talk about it. According to Ewen,on all 3 sets, Lucas was really only concerned about the CG/SFX and did no real directing of the Characters and their motivation. He went so far as to say the actors often didn't even know how well their scenes turned out on shooting day. That ( if it's true) explains alot to me. I'm thinking that Lucas was only thinking about what the films were going to end up looking like and judt didn't really put much thought into the script or caliber of acting. I agree that Portman and McGregor are good actors ( I don't know enough about Christianson ) that were victims of bad writing and poor direction. Lucas seems to be Vince McMahoning it, knowing to masses will flock to anything he throws at the wall, and eat what sticks.

I think one of the reasons that the original trigoly was better then the current movies is because the originals came out in the 70's & 80's, and back in their time there was no PG13, there was PG and R. You could be dark and gritty and skate on the edge of R and still be parent friendly, now to keep it under PG-13 you have to be totally Shrek like.
Another reason, I don't think George Lucas can direct very well, he doesn't capture the drama of a scene, they come off as forced and contrived.

True story my father went to high school with George Lucas, his picture is up and slight to the left of my dads, anyway my dad told me that George Lucas was the geek in school that always sat by himself during lunch writing his stupid space stories.

Look I know a good amount about slavery. From really crappy slavery like French Carribean or Spartan to moderatley crappy like US slavery.
My point is this. Most people when they think about slavery think of certain things. Overseers whipping slaves day and night. Underground railroads. Slave revolts. Kirk Douglas getting crucified. The average person has a certain view of slavery that Lucas wanted us to have so we felt sorry for Anakin.
Nothing was gained by it at all. Just make Anakin buttass poor and his mom not the Virgin Mary. Kill his father in some dipshit war. Everything is the same.
About 3PO let's put it this way. Anakin can't own propery he is property. The parts were Watto's the labor was Watto's so how in the fuck is 3PO Anakin's? If Anakin made robots and he got a percentage of the sales to pay for his manumission sure but otherwise it's just stupid.

IF Anakin was just poor, there's no reason for him to go into the pod races. The bet between Qui-Gon & Watto was how Anakin got freed, and created the conditions for Anakin to enter the Jedi Order. If he was just poor (and not a slave), he wouldn't have been indebted to Qui-Gon. The whole set-up for the Brawl To End It All (Anakin vs. Obi-Wan) had to be done during the first film, and the Pod Races and the Death of Qui-Gon set it up, as both fellas were indebted to him and tied together after his death. The "virgin birth" thing was pretty dumb, but I guess Lucas needed some way to explain away the magical prowess of Anakin without confusing people. He failed.

No the bet was to get parts for their ship and get Anakin free. Anakin's Mom could have stayed of her own free will. Same plot no dumbass moral lessons.

Shouldn't that be ESPECIALLY knowing how dark it's gonna be.

ALso..I hope they don't end it with the kids being born, though it probably will..
Show the kids..then cut scene..there is a disformed/burnt guy in a black outfit..someone tells him its all over. they won.

I totally believe that. In episode II, there's a scene where Sam Jackson is walking down a hallway talking to Yoda. Watch his eyes. He doesn't know where Yoda is supposed to be! He keeps shifting his eyes around, and finally settles on looking at a spot that wound up being about two feet away from where they put Yoda in. He was obviously trying his best, but no one told him what was going on.

If Watto doesn't care if he keeps the robot then what does it matter?

Watto says that he liked Anakin and obviously gave him privledges that most slaves do not enjoy. Either way it makes little to no difference.

And to be honest, I didn't infere any ham fisted moral lesson. If Lucas wanted us to feel deep sympathy for Anakin due to him being a slave, he could have easily made Watto an abusive slave master and Anakin and Shiimi the severely oppressed slaves. The only thing I inferred about the slavery angle was that Tatooine was a shitty part of the galaxy to live in. The rest of the slavery angle was directly stated or shown...You know, to make it extremely obvious to childern...who the movie is made for.

As it stands, they were treated like common workers who weren't allowed to leave and didn't get paid. For slaves, they had it pretty good.

Damn right they had it pretty good. They had it unbelievbaly good. Also you named the exact reasons why Lucas didn't have Watto be a shitty slave owner. It's a kid's movie and Lucas is desparate to keep the PG rating.
Fine answer this question then. Why didn't either Padme or the Jedi order buy Shimi and move her so she could be with Anakin? Or to a far better planet? From the time Anakin left until the end of TPM couldn't have been more than a week or so. It's very unlikely that Shiimi fell in love with Owen's father in that short of a period of time. So was Anakin, Padme, and the entire Jedi Order just cheap ungrateful pricks?
Please explain how the movie is in any way better that Anakin and his mom were slaves.
Also the slave part is a minor thing to be honest. But the virgin mother part is stupid. Taken together and that it's obvious Lucas went way too far try to make the viewers forget Vader. And it does raise a lot of questions that aren't easily explained.

I'd have to watch the movie again but is it something to do with Republic Credits not being a valid currency out there. That was why they had to chance the parts to repair the ship rather than buy them.

That said the next question could become "why didn't they then come back later with the correct change and purchase her?" Answer - dunno but here's a signed picture of your favourite SW character Jar Jar!

I hope Ep3 is good, but

Nervous about episode3 I am

Makes sense, considering that she is Leia's mother. If you've seen ep. IV-VI, you'll know what we mean. She displays that trait more in the cartoon "Clone Wars" thing on Cartoon Network.

That is probably the biggest problem with the first 2 movies. The characters aren't as cool. No Han Solo at all. Anakin is close to Luke I guess. But Amidala is nowhere as tough as Leigha.
Qui Jon was a great character that did do an excellent job of setting up Obi Wan's blindness to Anakin's eventual heel turn.
It's been mentioned that Lucas is almost purely concerned about the CGI/special effects of the movie and it shows. All of the major characters in the first 3 movies had their various little flaws and reasons for doing what they do.
These characters are nowhere near as well rounded out. I don't really buy Amidala's reasons not that they don't make sense they do but that she really gives a crap about why she is doing it. Too many of the minor new characters seem to be there just to show how cool Lucas is. The waiter in AOTC is a prime example. Why was he there? What did he do but foreshadow?
