Maybe this should be in the KZIM folder, maybe not. Perhaps someone here can help me with an answer to this. What is the appropriate reaction to a poorly sung version of the national anthems at any event? At the Jays/Cubs game on Saturday, both anthems were what I will politely interpret as 'unique interpretations', by some one-named guy. I didn't want to boo, but didn't know how to express disapproval with the performance.

On another note, Celebriducks rule.

Judging from Roseanne's "unique" version of our anthem a few years back, I think it's understood that one is booing the singer, and not the anthem when it's THAT bad.

IMHO, that is.

Agreed....of course, that doesn't mean I would do it. I was at the O's game Saturday and got chills listening to it. Of course, it was also Flag Day and there were three war heroes(including the "Cook" that was a POW, Shoshana Johnson) in the house so maybe that had something to do with it.

"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used and that definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against a tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible."

I've always figured that the best response is to quietly sit down.

And make sure that you write the team a letter afterwards, letting them know how poorly their choice reflects on them. Make sure you ask that they hire "singers", not "performers", in the future.

This thread reminds me of the strangest thing that happened at a Mariners game last year. A guy (probably about 45, I'd say) was a couple of rows in front of us and had his hat on during the anthem. A couple of rows behind us a guy who was probably 60-65 chucked peanuts at the hat guy during the anthem. At first I thought they knew each other because the guy in front of turned around and asked "Are you throwing stuff at me?" with kind of a knowing smirk on his face. The old guy behind us says "Take your hat off during the anthem!" To which the guy in front of us leans over the seats behind him, so he's right in front of us, and yells "Hey, FUCK YOU!" at the guy while pointing right at him.

At this point, the wife of the husband/wife couple that my wife and I go to the games with says to the guy in front of us, "Why don't you go UP THERE and talk to HIM, because we don't need to be in the middle of your little thing here!" To which the guy in front of us replies, "I think I will." I remember at this point not knowing if the guys were serious or joking or what. So we watch the guy go back to where the older guy was sitting and say something of the effect of "Don't tell ME what to do, OLD MAN," and when the old guy started to get up he younger guy pushed him back down in his seat, smacked the old guys glasses right off his face (with an open hand) and took the old guy's hat off his head and FLUNG is two sections over. I thought the old guy's poor wife was going to have a heartattack at that point.

Anyway, the younger guy calmly goes back to his seat and starts watching the game, while the old guy is kind of wanting to go down and kick the other guy's ass but knows he would have no chance so he's sort of "letting" his wife "make" him sit there like a puss. And security did NOTHING, except go get the old guy's hat and chat with the guy in front of us for a couple of minutes.

The lesson, as always, is that you should mind your own business, of course.

I have to applaud the younger guy there... I mean, I know you are supposed to respect your elders, but damn- respecting the flag is not hard.

Yeah, I know, there are all of the freedom of speech BS arguments, but I still say that it is an easy thing to respect the flag. It is a symbol of your rights and freedoms as an American. It is a symbol of all of the people who fought and died for those rights and freedoms. Even if you disagree with the government, or a war, or anything else.. the flag is supposed to transcend all of that.

I agree that complaining to the office about a poor singer of the anthem is appropriate, but booing? I don't think you should boo if they are just a poor singer (Roseanne should not have been booed, IMO), but if they are butchering the anthem by putting some kind of "artistic" spin on it, I say boo away.

JayJay, I have re-read your post a few times, and I'm getting a little lost.

You said the younger guy was wearing the hat and was getting hit with peanuts by the older guy behind you. Then, you said the younger guy took the old guy's hat off and threw it.

Am I reading it wrong? What am I missing? Who was wearing the hat?

It sounds to me like both the Old Guy and the new guy had hats, but the old guy had taken his off during the anthem and wanted the young guy to do the same.

As for people booing Roseannne, it wasn't just her singing (from which what I recall, she attempted to be as screechy and irritating as possible while singing), but she also grabbed her crotch and spit as a *homage* to baseball players when she was done. At least in that instance, when people booed, it was clear what the target of their displeasure was.

You could always try yelling out 'Your singing sucked!'

It's an incredibly difficult song to sing, let alone a capella. I think any amateur should be given the benefit of doubt when they're laying it on the line like that, especially in front of thousands. Now, Carl Lewis on the other hand... (I kid, I kid)

Reading this reminds me of Mo Cheeks helping that little girl out of her panic freeze during the NBA playoffs.

Yeah, they were both wearing hats. You've got everything else right.

Also, I go to a fair number of sporting events each year, and whenever they get some schmuck out there butchering the anthem there always seems to be a murmur that goes throught the crowd, like, "This is the national anthem, not a fucking talent contest. You're not going to get discovered here, so just sing the damn song."

Sadly, the fellow we were blessed with already was discovered. He was announced as a "Sony Recording Artist". All I can recall about his name was that it started with K, and a had a double consonant in the middle. They also brought him back to sing something during the 7th inning stretch. Whether it was Take Me Out to the Ballgame or OK Blue Jays or even Polly Wolly Doodle, it was completely incomprehensible to these ears.

At which point the younger guy should've been ejected from the stadium at a minimum, and possibly brought up on assault charges. Of course, if the younger guy had done what he should have in the first place (gone to security, explained that he was being physically harassed by another fan, and had them do their jobs and confront the fan who was throwing things), he wouldn't have been in that spot to begin with.

And if people didn't attach all sorts of artificial significance to a piece of colored cloth in the first place, let alone get emotionally rattled and start throwing things when someone doesn't "respect" it in the "proper" way in public, there wouldn't be scenes like this. Anyone this side of Lee Greenwood should be able to figure out that open, public displays of "patriotism" and how you _really_ feel about your country (its citizens, its leaders, its governmental policies, the actions of those who claim to act in its name, or all of the above) often have little or nothing to do with each other.

(Exactly why removing one's hat is necessary is one of those goofy etiquette things that's always bugged me. I mean, if I take my pants off too, do I love America twice as much? It'd be one thing if someone's openly razzing the flag or the anthem, but is some civilian standing there quietly with a hat on really bothering anyone in a measurable way?)

From going to 200+ Flames games, a few dozen Cannons games and a couple Stampeders games, here's the etiquette.

-Stand up, put hat over heart if hat is present
-Sing along.
-If anthem singer sucks, sing along louder to attempt to drown him out. If that is not possibly, tune him out and think about other things.

I love that around the DC area when we get to the "Oh say does that star spangled banner" verse, everyone in the stadium will yell "Oh!" at the "Oh" part. Why? For the Baltimore Orioles, of course!

Do any other cities have weird traditions like that?

During hockey games in college, my school's biggest rival was a school that had the word "Red" in their name, so the fans of that team would always yell "RED" in the "rockets red glare" phrase.

Yeah, in Atlanta, they'll yell "BRAVES!" at the appropriate part. They also do a bit referencing the old Atlanta Knights hockey team, but it doesn't work nearly as well.

...and you're supposed to stop singing and start cheering before the end of the song.

With The Star-Spangled Banner, start cheering during "...the la-a-a-and of the free..."

With O Canada, start cheering before the final "O Canada, we stand on guard for thee."

If there's a camera present, immediately stop singing and wave both arms.

--------------
In 1999, I went to see the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium. I decided to sing along with both anthems. After "O Canada", the guy behind me asked me what was wrong with me. After I explained(in a friendly manner) that I was from Toronto, he put a (huge) hand on my shoulder and said, "Well, we're not cheering for the Blue Jays today, ARE WE?"

I looked to my friend, and all she said was, "Welcome to Yankee Stadium."

I think if you take your pants off, you love the country just a bit TOO much.

Speaking of trouble over anthems and the such, here is my Wrestlemania 15 story:

One of my friends decided not to stand up during Boyz II Men's rendition of God Bless America at the start of the event. He would later say that it was because the song was not the National Anthem. Well, a group of drunk guys of course had a problem with this, and we got some "stand up" catcalls. I could understand my friend's motives, but it didn't help that I was worried that we were going to get our non-patriotic asses kicked. (Then again, one of the drunk dudes had Mr. Ass gear on...complete with bandana, so maybe I could have taken that guy.)

Fortunately nothing happened, and I was able to enjoy the mediocrity that was WM 15 without interruption.
