But what the hell was with that half-time show? I thought there was supposed to be like 6 acts...what happened to the Barenaked Ladies, the Boston Pops and the half dozen other non-american acts? I have other qualms about it too. The best though was after all the 'Americanism' of the half-time show, ie showing the names, Bono with the stars and stripes inside his jacket (WHICH HE STOLE FROM THE UNDERTAKER!!), the hosts talked with Paul McCartney and he said "Good Irish boys" I nearly laughed my ass off!

That's weird cause I'm in Canada too (NS to be exact) and our Fox had all the American ads. And the Global here showed different Canadain ads.

The mini-fridge was funny. I must have totally missed the comedic qualities of the Levi's commercial with the crazy legs. Apparently, "everyone" loved that one.

Apart from the Anheuser-Busch offerings, I thought the evening was quite flat ad-wise; the Britneyfest was just plain awful, I could really care less what an MLife is, the movie promos didn't excite me, and the Quizno's dart-gun ad was cute but we don't HAVE a Quizno's anywhere within an hour's drive of where I live.
The halftime show... ugh. U2 was perfectly fine as a musical performer, and kudos to them for doing it live (how LAME is it that a live halftime performance is an ODDITY, instead of standard practice?) Then they had to twist it into a Carefully Honed Display of Patriotism and it all seemed so contrived. And if they were going to scroll a list of those who died in the Sept. 11th explosions, was it too much to ask that they'd go fast enough to SHOW THE ENTIRE LIST? ("Okay, those of you from A to F... you're being mourned. The rest of you will have to wait until next year's halftime show, when we'll be doing G through M.")

I thought it was amazing how they padded and de-padded her (and I'm not just talking about her chest) for the various incarnations, with the 50s version being the most blatantly (and disgustingly) obvious. And I don't understand the "Simply Irresistible" incarnation, because she REALLY looked like Hamburgler in that one (more than usual) and less like Robert Palmer.
MAD TV did a BRILLIANT sketch Saturday night where Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston did an ad for "Generic Soda," a lá Britney's Pepsi ad from last year. It was a very fitting and appropriate tribute.
Of course, for me, the true genius was the E-Trade ad with the Chimp. Chimps/monkeys = GOLD
Does anyone know what the heck MLIFE is yet? I'm guessing it's a new Met Life online investment deal...

I think part of the problem was that they had to use more than one projection system to fill up the giant "screen" - and the two projectors weren't properly synced.
All that aside, the whole thing sure seemed kinda tacky. God forbid you question that in public, though. ;-)

That was my original guess, too. You must have lost interest (or were in the bathroom) during the "bellybutton" ad that told us that MLife was a new kind of AT&T Wireless offering. I still don't even own a cel phone, so I can't tell you any more about it than that - I ain't too hip on the lingo.

Bathroom break.  And I was right in thinking that whatever it was, I'd be horribly unimpressed with all the buildup. AT&T, huh? Sorry. They don't get my business any more, after a year of giving me the single worst long distance service I've ever had.
I still don't even own a cel phone, so I can't tell you any more about it than that - I ain't too hip on the lingo.

The Bud commercials worked for me. I would never use Mlife though, even if it gave me immortal life, countless beautiful women, lots of money, and the ability to stop Undertaker pushes for the rest of time.

| #16 Posted on 4.2.02 1253.58 | Hank Aaron was good... I forgot about that. The only one I really liked was the 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon commercial for Visa. Cedric the Entertainer was funny too... I kept hoping somebody would kick the Levi's moron in the junk®, especially since he was giving it such a wide target. The first E*trade commercial was good, but I didn't get the deal with the fat guys in spandex advertising the halftime commercial. And, I'm sorry, but as for the "little black dress" commercial, guys in drag just aren't funny.

Little known scientific fact: light travels faster than sound.
If you watched some of the pre-game stuff, you'd see Barry Manilow moving his mouth with the sound coming on a bit of a delay as well and he certainly wasn't lip synching.

According to reports which I read, the only performer who *didn't* pre-record at least part of his/her performance was U2.
And I *knew* Mariah would have to hit at least one dog-whistle note during her rendition of the National Anthem.

This probably happens every year, but I was struck this year by the number of "old ads" running during the game (admittedly the fourth quarter, when most everyone expected the game to be for all intents and purposes over).
That said, ads I liked:
Barry Bonds/Hank Aaron
Bud Light hawk
Satin Sheets
50s Britney (love those capri pants)
ads I didn't like:
Bud clydsdales (sp)
movie ads, including the now-unnamed Austin Powers 3
E-Trade monkey
