Both movies supposedly come out tomorrow, but I can't decide which movie I more want to see.

Swimfan has hotties Erika Christensen and Shiri Appleby, and could be a decent teen take on Fatal Attraction. The acting could be suspect, but the tension will be high anyways. Oh yeah, and Erika is hot.

City By the Sea returns DeNiro to an element he is more familiar with: Cop drama. He has been decent in comedy, but his best work always happens in drama/action flicks. Plus, this movie has Frances McDormand and Eliza Dushku (who makes Erika and Shiri look like Rosie O'Donnell and Linda Tripp).

So I am torn. Do any of you have a preference out of these two movies, or should I just go see Signs again?

I don't know what to think about Swimfan. Like you said, it seems tense, but I don't think the actors/actresses have enough experience or ability to make this kind of melodrama believable.

BUT...

I would definitely see it over yet another Robert DeNiro gritty cop flick. How many of these do we need? It's all becoming the same movie.

My recommendation: Signs again, or something else you missed earlier in the season.

I have met Erika and yes - she is hot. Swinfan however is screaming for the videostore. Personally I would wait for her indie film - HOME ROOM - to come out later this year.

I'm all for seeing yet another Robert DeNiro gritty cop flick this weekend. I like the hot stalker in SwimFan and all, but that movie is gonna be trash. Mark my words.

Kindly regard the previous statement as factual information.

Like I said in a post that had nothing to do with this - Swimfan is rated PG-13... Then why in the fuck does it exist?! It's almost like they don't want to make money.

I think the PG-13 is to get more teens to see the movie.Swinfan is a basically a teenage Fatal Attraction w/o a bunny being fried and that teen audience equals big money even if the movie is trash but I doubt the teen audience they were shooting for would realize its trash or not.

And if it was "R" rated movie they would just sneak in to see it anyway.

It's the old movie addage:

The more people who CAN see a movie WILL.

Why do you think there isn't a R movie in the top ten all time, they're all PG-13 or below.

Not saying that "Swim Fan" will be a big hit, just saying I get why it's PG-13

true, but i think the academy released a little figure last year that said that 69% of best picture winners were Rated R or X.

i use that excuse when i have a R movie on at work late at night...hell, most of the movies i watch at work are R or pg-13, but most lean towards R (pulp fiction, Clerks, Me, Myself, & Irene...)

But also a lot of R and X rated movies get better box office numbers after they win the Oscars than before.

I remember seeing "American Beauty" in theaters in the summer of 2000 when they rereleased it after it won Best Picture.

G rating makes more than PG,PG makes more than PG-13,PG-13 makes more than R and R makes more the NC-17.

Its not really true but its close.

However, in the teen movie genre, the reigning king in terms of gross that I can think of is American Pie 1 & 2, both of which did huge numbers despite having an R rating. I think a lot of people are catching on to the notion that PG-13 is the kiss of death in terms of a movie geared towards a younger audience being able to do anything worthwhile. While I agree for being a huge movie you need to be PG-13, in order to be a decent genre/niche pic (like the teen market), I think the best way to distinguish yourself, and maybe pick up that extra $10-20 million, is to go all the way and take the R.

What kind of a thread is this? Reminds me of an SAT analogy: "Painful death is to Sex with many beautiful women" as "Swimfan is to City By The Sea."

On a side note, those of you with AIM can send a message to swimfan4u and partake in at least a good 30 seconds of mild amusement. AOL seems to have improved the AI since the last time they ran one of these promotions (for Swordfish, I believe).

SOK (hailing from Calgary, AB), quietly says:I'd prefer to see Swimfan...two reasons:

1) -- the chick in the movie looks way hot;

2) DeNiro looks like my ex-girlfriend's father in the posters, and I hate that bastard. Elisa's father, not DeNiro, I mean.

I'll end up seeing both of them eventually....but I'm not really a movie person.

I don't see many movies. The other day I had 4 hours to kill before work, so I saw the only thing playing at that time: SwimFan.

Time nearly killed me.

Avoid this movie at any and all costs. The WORST movie I've seen since Evolution. It couldn't have been any more cut and paste from the typical teen movie if they tried.

Ugh.

Evolution was a great fun movie....

but when we saw the trailer for Swimfan at the sneak preview for Austim powers 3, the whole audience (employees of the theater and family) just busted out laughing at how stupid swimfan looked...

ohhhhh....a swimmer has an obsessed fan....who cares...

My ex-girfriend wants to see it. Me? Yawn. I'll take a good romantic comedy any day. But if given the choice? I'll sit through the HHH DVD. hold on...thats not a choice? Damn!

Mind you, I've never seen EVOLUTION before. Who was in that one? what was it about?

EDIT: added stuff

Evolution

buddy-buddy movie about aliens...kinda like how Ghostbuster was to ghosts, Evolution is to aliens...

David Duchovny (X-Files) as Dr. Ira Kane
Julianne Moore (Hannibal, The Shipping News)as Dr. Allison Reed, CDC
Orlando Jones (MAD TV, The Replacements, Make 7-Up Yours) as Prof. Harry Block
Seann William Scott (Stiffler, American Pie 1 & 2, Dude, Where's my car) as Wayne Grey
Ted Levine (Silence of the Lambs "It puts the lotion on it's skin!") as Brigadier Gen. Russell Woodman
Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters, SNL) as Governor Lewis

from imdb.com:

A firefighting cadet, two college professors, and a geeky-but-sexy government scientist work against an alien organism that has been rapidly evolving ever since its' arrival on Earth inside a meteor.

Oh, god...David Duchovney...in an alien movie? Typecast much? I liked Seann William Scott in DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR, and he was cool as Stiffler in the American Pie movies...LOL...

Two words... MILF! MILF!

I liked City by the Sea, thought the drama and character development were done well enough. I also liked the fact that you don't see a particular person at the end--(don't want to spoil it)--otherwise it would have been too perfect of an ending. As it was, it was somewhat bitter sweet.

I may have hated it too though if I had seen more of the DeNiro cop movies of the 90s/2000s. So far the only other one I've caught is 15 Minutes.
