In the city known for thin air and extra hang time, Jason Elam tied the field goal length record with 63 yards in 1998.

Now, in the same city, he gets to watch as likely-to-be-cut teammate Ola Kimrin BESTS that mark by two yards? That was the sickest freaking FG kick I've ever seen in my LIFE. He could have made it from 70 with that kick.

Getting to see that was the only highlight to the drubbing of the local 11 tonight in a lackluster effort I hope doesn't carry over to 2002's regular season.

Likely to be cut? Probably. Getting picked up by another team? I wouldn't rule it out. Had the distance, and it sounds like accuracy wasn't an issue. Daaaaamn.

if he is cut, the skins will take him. Brett Conway is hampered by injury, and isn't that great of a kicker anyway.

he can sometimes kick a long ball, and those short, pesky, extra points dumbfound him...

Do NFL teams ever "hide" kickers? I know they have practice/developmental squads, etc. where they'll place promising position players. Jason Elam is a good/great kicker, but I'm not sure I'd cut a guy with a leg like that. How would you like to cut him, have him hook up with another team, and then see him come back and beat you with another long kick in the final moments of a game? It's not like the low salary they'd pay to a kicker would have a great impact on their budget.

They could put him on the practice squad but he first has to pass through waivers.

Kickers come back to haunt their former teams all the time -just two years ago the Raiders cut Joe Nedney and two weeks later he signed with Denver and beat the Raiders in Oakland - they could keep Kimrin for kickoffs but that is unlikely since Shanahan doesn't like to do that.

That's because most of them wind up as nomads and change addresses from year to year. Vary rarely does a kicker ever stay in one place too terribly long...

Do the Redskins really need a kicker?

Couldn't they go for 2-point conversions all the time?

And for the Joe Nedney thing:

I bet he loved watching last December, when the Titans played the Raiders, watching the guy who replaced him miss 3 field goals and basically lose the game for them.

Heh heh heh...I'm thinking back to 1997, where the Packer kicking job was open for the first time in many years after the departure of Chris Jacke (and sadly, his mullet.) It came down to draft pick Brett Conway vs. free agent (I think) Ryan Longwell. Heh heh heh...I think we made out OK on that deal; '97 game at Philly notwithstanding.

Conway gets hurt way too easy, and's prone to inaccuracy. Go for the Broncos reject-to-be. Trust a cheesehead. :-)
