Check it.

*smack*

Surely this will help to stimulate the economy and end US dependency on foreign oil.

Well, that should at least do a LITTLE to counter the riduculously high SUV tax that our lovely California government is enacting (among others)...
And it is not like it is targeted at everyone, rather as an aid to small buisness. This is not to say that I would not like to see some kind of tax-break for hybrids, or other eco-friendly vehicles, but this does not seem so bad...

If you listen to the leftists out there, any small businesses who take advantage of the tax breaks and purchase an SUV (thus doing their own small part to help stimulate the economy) are supporting TERRORISTS!!!!

Bush appointee Jeffrey Runge, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration scolded automakers at an industry conference one week ago for not making SUVs safer and more fuel efficient. He told reporters that he considers some SUVs so dangerous he wouldn't allow his family in them ''if they were the last vehicles on Earth.''

Where did the Bush Administration find this fuck? He must not drive a car full of kids to school. If he ain't a leftover from Clinton, I just turned Indy.

All sarcasm aside, we partake and own a SUV. All that's left to duck the terrorism standards is booze, cigarettes, porn and Barbie / SpongeBob. Viva la Cuba

Smoke a joint for freedom!

Where is it written that a small business can't buy a cargo van, or a good ol'-fashuned All-Amurkin pickup truck? In addition to being a reliable and fairly durable piece of machinery, a beat up Ford F-150 smacks of the salt of the earth type who could use a tax break, if Gee-Dub is so bent on handing one out.

I think Poolboy is on to something with tax breaks for hybrids though.

I'm all for them too. It's a win-win situation; a tax break to help the working class and something to encourage a cleaner environment. What's not to love?

"Present day writers, especially of the Socilaist school of thought- base their various theories upon one common hypothesis: They divide mankind into two parts. Grimis and I agree on something. I'm fairly sure that's the seventh seal. Time to open a parka shop in hell and throw your 401(k) into betting on a Cubs-Bosox World Series ;)

There already are tax breaks for hybrids. You can receive a $2,000 deduction on your federal taxes (provided the hybrid system adds at least $2,000 to the price, which I'm sure would be easy to prove). This was passed in 2002 (I think) and is retroactive so that people who purchased their hybrid in 2000 or 2001 can receive the tax benefits for those years. This is only temporary as it starts to phase out in 2004 and will be gone in 2007. However, many states do have tax relief for hybrids in addition to the federal tax deduction. Tax relief mileage will vary by state, of course.

EDIT: Here's the link to the IRS site that shows the Toyota and Honda hybrids qualify: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=104549,00.html

Also, I couldn't find a link that detailed all the tax deductions by state, but I do know that Maryland allows a deduction and New York allows both a deduction and the state exempts a portion of the vehicle price from state and local sales tax.

So am I the only person on wienerboard who holds that SUVs are disgusting, demonic, life-sucking and originality-lacking killing machines?

Hardly.

I can't think of anything you can do in an SUV that you can't do at least as well in another vehicle. Unless you start stacking things, like having to get the twins and their gear and the neighbor kid to hockey practice AND overcompensating.

There are people who buy ridiculously large, unsafe, gas-sucking monstrosities.

There are people who have legitimate needs for large vehicles with impressive capacities for hauling people and/or cargo.

Rarely do these two groups intersect.

See, this is what I hate about Americans nowdays. 50 years ago, your average Joe was ready to fight and die for this country. Now you can't even get your average Joe to consider switching cars, or really sacrifice more than going out, buying a $2.95 flag, and flying it. Wow. I'm sure the folks who stormed Omaha Beach would be real impressed with that.

There is something very small that lots of average people could do to make their country safer, and all folks can do is deride and laugh at the suggestion. The excuses and rationalizations start coming: "it wouldn't do that much anyway." "I bet Alec Baldwin secretly has an SUV, so why shouldn't I?" People offer other suggestions, that, of course, have no impact on their daily lives "we can just get the oil by drilling in Alaska."

All this talk by the right-wing about sacrificing for this country is just that - all talk. In reality, none of them are willing to sacrifice the least little detail of their decedant lives for this country. It's like God wants Americans to do anything they want, and changing any bit of it is an anathma to the American Dream.

I challenge any one of them to give an example of how they made the smallest concrete sacrifice in their own daily lives the last year and a half in order to try and make this country just a little bit safer.

Does anyone think that the men who stormed the beaches at Normandy to PROTECT THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE would then sacrifice THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE just because some leftists say we are wrong to buy oil from the Arabs? To anyone not familiar with America, WE INVENTED the automobile! BIG and FAST cars are an American tradition!!! Why should ANY OF US give up our way of life? I've got a beat up Dodge Charger in my parents back yard just waiting for me to have enough money to restore it with a 426. You KNOW that's gonna guzzle the gas. And so what? Should I feel bad because I don't throw it out and buy some piece of shit mini car that gets a thousand miles to the gallon and has no Zero to Sixty rating because it can't even reach 60? Big fast and LOUD cars ARE America. It is part of who we are. Rather than piss all over 100 years of automotive tradition because of arab oil, we should get the oil we already have in Alaska.

Umm...didn't I just at least *say* that SUVs are evil and a waste of resources? I have in fact said this time and time again in private and in public, I will never buy one, will always recommend that people do NOT buy them, etc. I don't drive fast, waste a lot of gas, and other "small" things I am not going to sit here and list. Do any of these qualify as small concrete sacrifices in your mind?

Yes, except that oil's already been earmarked for China, so how exactly does that solve this problem? Not to mention the fact that we've got, by the most generous estimates, about thirty days worth of oil up there anyway.
