Firstly and foremostly, I am new to the Wienerboard and so salute all the wrestling fans around the globe.

Ok..to the point.

Me and a friend are planning to venture to SummerSlam this summer; hoping to obtain front row ringside tickets, and so we need to be quick on the phone on the day the tickets are released.
At the moment, there is no set location, but there are founded rumours circulating about a return to the Toronto Skydome. These rumours are supported by comments to be found here:

http://www.dejahthoris.net/ blog/summerslam2004.html

I was wondering if you guys, the knowledable bunch you are, could tell me :-

a.) is this source reliable?
and
b.) are there any tips for getting guaranteed front row ringside seats (We have the money.. we just need the tickets :P)

Thanks once more,

Retro.

I've heard that it won't be at the SkyDome because of a Blue Jays game that day. Rumored to be at the Air Canada Centre.

According to the Miami Herald, Tampa is in the running to hold this year's Summer Slam PPV at Tropicana Field.

If the scheduling concerns are worked out between the Devil Rays and WWE then it appears as though that is where the event will be held. Tropicana holds up wards of 45k people, so the WWE could expect a big gate if they are able to secure the location.

http://www.wrestlezone.com

Toronto (Canada), Manchester (England) and Tampa (Florida) are in the running to host the WWE pay-per-view SummerSlam in August.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays baseball team plays home games indoors at Tropicana Field in a 43,772-seat stadium. That does not include seating on the field.

Baseball season begins Sunday, April 4 and runs through September. WWE must schedule the event when the Devil Rays are traveling or select another venue in the area, if it decides Tampa is the place. Tropicana Field is the largest indoor facility in the area.

The Devil Rays play at Tropicana Field on Sunday, Aug. 22. They are on the road Aug. 15 and 29. Many WWE stars live in the Orlando/Tampa area.

Good golly, could you have possibly found a link with more pop ups this side of the torch?

It'd be great if they'd bring it to Manchester so we folks could get to see something other than the utterly meaningless Rebellion and Insurrexion.

As a regular reader of Inside The Ropes however I know that young Bulldog's record when it comes to inside info and scoops is almost flawless.

Yeah! Listen to my man Run DMR there. He knows what he's talking about...

Seriously, though, about a month ago, a good (legitimate) contact of mine said that things were set for Toronto to host it. I hope that's still the case, anyways.

Yeah, my mate has just contacted WWE Canada and they said that as nothing was confirmed they were unsure, but everything was pointing towards Toronto.

I personally would rather it was abroad, as I feel like an adventure. I can also get a return Air Canada flight for £350

I am needing some advice on the likelihood of getting 2 Row A TV Side tickets, as there are only about 16-20.

Guess its be quick on the phone, or pay more on eBay.

From my last news report (hey, I got a HTML link to WORK!) right here on the board, take this for what it's worth:

Journalist Extraordinaire, ‘Joltin’ Joe’ of Toronto Starphone’s Wrestling Hotline has reported that while the rumours of SummerSlam heading to Toronto are true, they may not be heading to the Skydome as originally thought. WWE were keen to make back the lost gate from the smaller than usual WrestleMania crowd, but an MLB game being held on the date put an end to that pipe dream. Should they remain on course for a Toronto setting, then the Air Canada Centre would be the next logical choice says PW news reporter Daniel Bradshaw, as it holds 18,000+ for wrestling events. Other venues being suggested are Toronto and even a re-hash of 1992 where SummerSlam travelled to England. No official word is expected from WWE until at least June on the matter.

Leggo, I dig your columns and everything... but if you ever... EEEEEEEVER, refer to Joltin' Joe (even jokingly) as a 'journalist extraordinaire' again, I may be forced to take legal action against you...

Who would be more deserving of a 'journalist extrordinaire' title? The list includes:
(1) His old man Norm DaCosta
(2) Anyone who cuts and pastes shit on 411.
(3) Grimace of McDonald's fame
(4) The bowl of 'Special K' cereal sitting on my desk right now.
(5) Random air particles.

Now I am the only Brit thinking about the logistics of holding it in Manchester? There are three possible venues that i can foresee holding Summerslam.

1) M.E.N. Arena - Ive been to No Mercy here and the WWE are coming back here in May but its not really big enough for Summerslam (it only holds 18,000 people) when you compare it to the last Summerslam in England (1992 - close to 80,000 people in Wembley Stadium, the coolest day of my life).

2) Old Trafford Stadium - Holds 67,500 but by the time Summerslam rolls around will hold 75,000 people. If they complete the building work in time we are looking at 90,000 people (including seats built on the pitch. But there is one problem - the Premiership football season starts in late August and there is no chance in hell that their groundsman (who is one of the best and strictest there is) will let the WWE mess up his pitch by building a ring on it. Also has no roof so a late August night in Manchester does not usually make for the best outdoor wrestling conditions.

3) City of Manchester Stadium - Holds 50,000 but again it is a football stadium so the same problems as above although it is very modern, top of the range everything (including hotel built on to it) and Manchester events and tourism are pushing this stadium like crazy (hell i think they wormed an England international match if i remember correctly). Again no roof and bad transport system does not make a likely combination.

Sorry for the length of the post just trying to show the options available and to say we can rule out Manchester as a venue for Summerslam. Would be nice if someone did the same for other cities though

Wasn't Tropicana already scouted for a PPV (Wrestlemania, even?) and basically determined to be a really shitty place to hold a wrestling event?

Supposedly they were about *that* close to putting WM X8 at Tropicana before they a) reached that conclusion and b) Skydome made them a better offer.

They had in the middle of Safeco Field in March for WrestleMania and they were able to have the field in fine shape for Opening Day of the baseball season.

Haha, I was being sarcastic for the record. I think Joltin' Joe's credentials are clear from taking one look at his name, and I've never even heard his show.

If you've never heard it before, I strongly -- STRONGLY -- encourage you to give it a call, even if its a long distance call. (416) 350-3000, code 2049. Anything I say here could not possibly do him justice.

Didn't know Joe was Norm DaCosta's son. I remember his wrestling columns in the Star a few years back.

And I agree, Joltin Joe guy has to be the worst pseudo-journalist I've ever heard. It makes sense he got his job because of nepotism as I can't think of any other way a major paper like the Star would hire him.

One thing I don't get is that he usually manages to get good interviews. Obviously the fact that he's a moran means the fuc*ks them up but nonetheless he does have some contacts.

I've heard Joltin' Joe, and he's a total joke. The problem, I think, comes from the fact that wrestling isn't like a regular sport and so it's not as easy to know when a writer is good or not. My father is a newspaper editor, and when he had a guy writing wrestling for him he had no idea whether what the guy was writing was credible or even relevant. There's probably no one at the Star that knows any better, so I imagine Joe has free reign to do whatever he wants with his time.

On another note, how ironic would it be if TO beat Tropicana out for a second major show so soon after taking WM X8 out of there?

As a fellow Wisconsinite, I'd love for that to happen, however, if the WWE ever did hold a big stadium show in Wisconsin, it'd be in Miller Park because of the roof.

Its a real shitty place to hold a baseball game also. And, its also a shitty place to hold a Final Four. Basically, the Trop is just a shitty place.
