I think that, no matter what, SummerSlam and WrestleMania are always going to have fast sell-outs. At least, until wrestling really hits bottom, then it'll take a bit longer.
However, keep in mind that there were RAWs and SMACKDOWN!s that would always sell out in the same amount of time and that doesn't happen anymore, so I wouldn't say they're out of the woods yet by any means.
I attempted to buy tickets to SummerSlam, but had no luck. The Nassau Coliseum isn't very large. It only holds 14,800 people for a wrestling event. Had the event been in a larger arena, I doubt it would have sold out so quickly. Also, I went on Ticketmaster.com later that night and there was still at least one ticket available in section 318. Tickets went on sale at 10 AM, so draw your own conclusions.
I believe I once read that sold out means that at least a certain % has been sold, not all 100% yet. Probably something like 90-95 % and you are no longer able to get two seats together or something. *shrug* no matter what, at least they are near selling out of the arena and that is good no matter how many people fit the building.

I don't know if there are lots of offshoots in terms of cousins and nephews that have picked up the wrestling tradition (I can't even begin to entangle the complex webs of the Maivia/Anoia/Fatu extended clan from the Pacific islands)
