According to the WWE's Investor Relations website and their September 17th Key Business Drivers update, the SummerSlam initial buyrate estimate is somewhere in the range of 380,000 buys.

SummerSlam 2004 got ~380K, 2003 got ~450K and 2002 got ~525K.
The last co-branded PPV (WrestleMania XX) got ~900K, the last Smackdown PPV (Great American Bash) got ~230K and the last RAW PPV (Vengeance) got ~225K.

Here's the thing: THEY DIDN'T.

LAST 3 SMACKDOWN PPVS:
-Great American Bash [July] 230,000
-Judgment Day [May] 225,000
-No Way Out [February] 265,000
TOTAL: 720,000

LAST 3 RAW PPVS:
-Vengeance [July] 225,000
-Bad Blood [June] 250,000
-Backlash [April] 300,000
TOTAL: 775,000

Instead of five PPVs grossing about 250,000 buys apiece (as the averages are nowadays), they get six.

Still HHH vs Benoit vs Eugene should of outsold Eddie vs JBL remembering exactly what everyone thought about Eddie and JBL at the time. This was JBL's first push towards the championship (judgement day withstanding..) which left me thinking WTF~!!!!

Or you have HHH vs Benoit and a comedy act aswell...

But you have to also take into consideration that Raw's Vengeance[July] PPV was the third of the three PPV's in six weeks experiment, which I doubt gave that PPV any buyrate favors.

smark/net attack wienerville advisory holds at ORANGE alert - High (JBL is STILL WWE champion and now smarks arch enemy HHH is the World Champion. Major red threat, but the undercard seems okay. The alert holds... for now)- 9/19

The Smackdown PPV was also offered free to the military, so it's possible they picked up extra buys (which they later had to refund) from that.

The Vengeance 2004 PPV also had some weak, almost non-existent build-up. WWE really coasted on the promotion for that one.

Hmm,I present..."The MIME!" His promo is well...he doesn't cut promo's. They mostly involve him and his opponent meeting and "The Mime" and they just can't understand what he's trying to get across for him.
