I'd argue that titles, as plot devices, play just as big of a role as wrestlers, good matches, and feuds do.
Yes, they're inanimate objects, but they're the inanimate objects that everyone is after. If everyone stops going after the titles and starts concentrating more on feuds and putting on great matches, they lose the very motivation that made them put on the boots in the first place. Everyone should want to be the champion, the headliner at WrestleMania, and all that stuff.
Without that motivation to win a belt, many feuds and matches have nothing at stake, and really no reason to be happening to begin with.

I can't disagree but the fact is that at this moment in time, the IC title doesn't interest anybody. Really it doesn't. Its changed hands way too oftem in meaningless matches, hell at this moment in time there is only ONE title that really really has any value and that is the WWE World Title carried by HHH. All others pale in significance.

| #23 Posted on 22.8.03 1945.57 | Sure the IC title is in the same shape it was a few months before they retired it. (I say the belt something when RVD had it, before it went to Kane and into the World title.) It's the case right now because there isn't a real feud over it.
The US title is hot because you've got four people vying for it and two of those guys are Eddie and Benoit. With Christian and the IC title, we've only seen a bunch of matches that didn't seem to click. Booker's injury didn't help matters either (which isn't to say I think they had a plan for him.)
The best thing they could do IMO is give it to RVD, who tends to make titles mean something, and shoot Booker to the main event when he returns.
I hope HHH gets you fired. | oldschoolhero

| #24 Posted on 23.8.03 0518.27 | Really, the easiest solution once Booker's injury became apparent would have been to shift Shane over the "Kane Sacrificial Lamb" spot and shunt RVD into a quickie IC Title feud with Christian. Kane gets to kill someone, van Dam won't look like a total tool, the title's on the show and Eric Bischoff is nowhere near in-ring action. But then I tihnk they should've used Cena as Vince's hired gun to take out Steph and built to a Casket Match with Taker at SS, so what do I know?
Actually, you can see the warped WWE logic behind the whole deal. They've just branched out into split PPVs, and this is their first joint show with the reinstated secondary titles and tag team belts. Maybe they want to avoid an Invasion-like situation of over-saturation of championships on one show. Although Haas and Benjamin REALLY should be on the show. Maybe they could slot Hardy/Moore Vs. Rey/Kidman Vs. WGTT into the space left by Gowen/Hardy?
