At least, I assume that's what he wants. That's what "subscription to a thread" usually means. Of course, in our case, this would be a really bad idea unless we were actually validating people's email addresses (the fact that we don't is bad anyway, and someone who's spam-conscious like me really should have fixed that long ago).
Perhaps once the latter issue is worked out, one of us can slap in a subscription option too (it's not really all that tough to do... Just a hook on post that looks for users subbed to the thread and pings them).

I've never demanded an email address out of people as a prerequisite to registering and don't plan on changing that policy. Recently, we modified the profile page to not display email addresses when the page is hit by lurkers or bots, while logged in users CAN see them... if they've been defined.
