SHADES OF POKERFACE!

Yes, I once made a sign that said that for a SD! taping.

I'm not sure if we need more of Tazz dancing with Kelly Kelly though...

I was kind of partial to the Josh Matthews/The Cat announce team.

Pardon my ignorance, but is Josh Matthews still with the company? I mean, the show is clearly Velocity, so why not put him in the spot?

And yeah, Adamle was awful. The higlights for me was him referring to Jimmy Wang Yang as simply "Jimmy" in the opener and talking him up. Which was endearing until after the match, where we realized during an exchange with Tazz that the reason he referred to him simply as "Jimmy" was because he couldn't remember his last name...and he most likely kept focusing on him was because he had no idea who else was in the ring.

I just want to note as well that even though ECW is a complete throw-away program, that hour (despite Adamle's awful play by play) was the best hour of wrestling I've seen in awhile. Kane/Taker vs. Miz/Morrisson wasn't bad at all, and that opener was a lot of fun despite the presence of Deuce & Domino.

He hosts Heat with Todd Grisham.

If Adamle doesn't improve, they can always go with what they did with Maria when she flubbed interviews and make him the ditzy ECW announcer.

Yes. There's a vague story that it had already become run by committee before Styles took over.

I think he had a period of time where he was performing very well. He did win RSPW "Best Announcer" two years in a row back in 2002-2003. But then things just seemed to go downhill.

I think Cole's very good at working with his color guy. He does a good job setting them up to do character bits, or explain the psychology of the match. The problem is that Coach doesn't really give him anything to work with, especially since I think the best stuff he did with Taz and JBL had to do with asking them their opinions based on their in-ring experience. As far as Cole's general play-by-play stuff, I'd say it's decently inoffensive, but nothing spectacular.

I don't even know if it's so much that he's a good announcer, though he's worlds better than what he used to be. But it's more like the overall quality of announcers has gone way south, like Mike Tenay and Joey Styles who were shells of their former selves.

And of course, to stay on topic, Michael Cole looks awfully good when you compare him with the guy that calls his partner "The Tazz".

Based on the current crop of televised play-by-play guys:

Jim Ross
Mike Adamle
Mike Tenay

Even if you throw Joey Styles in there, Cole is the best by a mile and a half. Ross's good days are probably older than the average wrestling fan, Tenay just sucks, Styles was made into a joke, and Adamle is the punchline.

Keep in mind, the reason some of these guys suck is the way they're produced. Mike Tenay with the screaming and the asking of obvious questions, Joey Styles and the rest of WWE being told not to call moves, etc. If you put Mike Tenay down as a color man next to Michael Cole, he'd be worlds better than he is now.

I'm not entirely convinced that that's true. I'll give you that Tenay was the best part of the WCW announce team by far, but look who he was in the booth with: Larry Zbysko, a past-his-prime-but-still-occasionally-hilarious Bobby Heenan, Mark f'n Madden, Scott Hudson, and Tony Schiavone. My six year old would have shined sitting next to those guys, and the only wrestlers she knows the names of are Rey Mysterio, the Undertaker and Mr. Kennedy. Tenay has the knowledge, sure, but I've never seen him as anything but shrill, obnoxious and annoying.

You know who needs to fill the color chair on Smackdown? Stevie Ray. FR00T B00TY~!!!!!1!!11

The fact that these guys are so hard to find is pretty amazing when you stop and think about it. It seems like a really great job, and a fairly easy job for any average wrestling fan. The pay can't be terrible. It seems like a couple of hours a day of work and study of the moves, wrestlers, history and backstory would be all it takes to start, and then less than that once you get the hang of it. Talent is surely a key as Vince McMahon proved in the 80's. So, while it seems easy it's not for everyone.

Adamle obviously is putting zero work in. Cole seems to still put the work in and he seems to really love wrestling, but is just Michael Cole never good/never bad. Joey Styles is better suited for and underdog gorilla warfare type of announcing. I have no idea what happened to Tenay. JR is good and knows the history, but has gotten old and doesn't seem to study the newer product like he did back in his glory years.

As much as Tony Schiavone became almost a parody as WCW went on, I have to defend his work in the mid to late 1980's. IMHO, he had potential to be one of the all-time great announcers, which was partially why listening to the late 1990's Schiavone was oh-so-painful. I'll admit that nostalgia may play a small role in my assesment of his work.

Unfortunately, I think he'll be most remembered for his weekly declaration of "greatest main event in Nitro history" and other extended hyperboles than he will for anything else.

That's the thing though, Vince looks for announcers who aren't wrestling fans. Why he does this is beyond me --- would ESPN hire a football announcer who didn't know anything about football? (Wait, Dennis Miller, bad example)

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

Well, that and trash- talking Mick Foley when he won the title on Raw. (sarcasam mode on) *BRILLLLLLLIANT MOVE OF THE CENTURY , TONY!!!!* (sarcasam mode off)

As bad as Adamle is right now, I can't help but say maybe we should be patient for a couple of weeks. Let's be honest, when they put JBL and Cole together on Smackdown, we all thought it would be a total disaster. Instead, JBL proved to be arguably the best color commentator around since Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan and Jesse Ventura. I'm just saying that Adamle could become a competent commentator with enough time.

As for Styles, no need to shead tears. According to http://www.lordsofpain.net/news/2008/articles/1208372021.php, he seems to be getting a decent promotion of sorts with this switch. Worse comes to worse, I think they'll simply put him back on the air like they did with JR on Raw. No harm, no foul.
