It's not like this puts a total pall on the Suns' chances to win a title (since he will be back), but this certainly doesn't help them any if their best scorer/rebounder is on the shelf until February. Especially since I can't see Kurt Thomas and Brain Grant matching that kind of production and presence in the post.

Not sure if you're a Suns fans or not, Blanket, but your tone belies the seriousness of this; this is the full-on panic scenario! This isn't just a scope; this is knee microfracture surgery (ismoc.net), or as I like to call it, "the ultimate roll of the dice" and this news should send shivers down the spine of any Suns fan. It's a pretty controversial procedure, and essentially was the deathblow to the career of Terrell Davis. Phoenix fans should well remember microfracture surgery as causing the destruction of the careers of Andre Wadsworth and Eric Swann.

While the procedure appears to be improving some, the players who have had it and returned to action recently (Stephen Davis and Jason Kidd spring to mind immediately) I would say are not their former selves (even a cursory look at Kidd's stats and the Nets' record shows the loss of explosiveness). While I grant that it's still too early to tell in their cases (the baseball equivalent in terms of severity, Tommy John surgery, generally requires 20-24 months to return to form), microfracture surgery is the last thing I want to hear (short of "Amare found dead" or "Amare wants to join Joe Johnson in Atlanta"), essentially on the heels of Amare's 5-year max-out extension signed last week.

I think that's a pretty big understatement; Grant is the very definition of a journeyman, and Kurt Thomas is just a notch above that. Amare is one of the NBA's elite, and unquestionably the difference-maker for the Suns. Without him, Phoenix is the "pre-Barkley, KJ and Thunder Dan" Suns.

Horrific news!

Well, look at it this way, though. With as many careers as it's destroyed, the law of averages says that microfracture surgery is due to work for *one* player soon, right?

Today at the Blockbuster store where I work, we got in a new copy of NBA '06 for PSP, and Amare Stoudemire was on the cover. That just made me smile.

Start of a new cover jinx? (Not that I believe in those sort of things, but I can't help it.)

If I can be serious for a moment... Stoudemire's injury no doubt hurts the Suns, and they probably won't win the overall best record like they did last year, but it's not exactly as if the Pacific Division is filled with teams that are likely to cease the opportunity and deny the Suns a chance to repeat as division champions. Besides, even without Stoudemire they're a pretty good team.

Even as a Knicks fan, I have to wonder why anyone would be willing to trade for any of the shit contracts that they have/had. Randolph is a nice enough player who does put up good numbers, but he's not exactly the answer to anyone's prayers.
