I reluctently tuned into the White Sox game tonight and was surprised to see Stoney next to Ken 'worst play-by-play man in the universe' Harrelson. How long has Stoney been on this gig? I was hoping he'd go back to the Cubs if/when Bob Brenly steps down.

Good for DJ...congrats to him.

I miss Stoney. He's one of the good ones. But we'll always have Sutcliffe once a week *pained grin*

I would love to see WSCR back the truck up and get Stoney to take over the radio gig for the White Sox after this year, because Ed Farmer and Chris Singleton are the worst radio team I've heard in my lifetime. Damn I miss John Rooney.

If that can't be arranged, I could live with Hawk Harrelson retiring, and a Steve Stone/Darren Jackson teamup on tv.

Getting rid of Hawk would be best case. Outside of that, would it kill the White Sox not to have Hawk do play-by-play? Hawk doing color with a strong play-by-play man could be passable.

Problem is Harrelson will never agree to be a color man, and the Sox will never bust him down as long as he wants the job. That's part of the reason Tom Paciorek was jettisoned after so many years. Between being a total company man on the mic and never letting Jerry Reinsdorf take any blame for the disaster that was Hawk as GM back in 1986 he's got a job for life with the team.

If I had my way Hawk would retire, and they would get Jack McDowell as color man along with Jackson on PBP for tv, and bring back Dave Wills from Tampa Bay to do PBP with Stone on color. That would instantly move them up to at least the middle if not higher on both ends.

You can't have Steve Stone, we want him back on the north side (ok, so I'm on the REALLY north side :-) ).

I'm hoping for a 'history repeats itself' moment, and we get something like this:

I listen to a lot of games on XM and while your premise that Singleton and Farmer are a bad announce team is correct (they really do stink), they are still a notch better than Sterling and Waldman.

CRZ had to edit my profile and close my table for me. I am a bad man.

I'd bet there's lots of Cub fans who would kick in a few bucks to whichever AAAA team would hire current Cubs TV color man Bob Brenly as manager for the 2008 season. Not that Brenly is bad (personally I think he does a fair job of getting subtle criticisms in from time to time), it's just that Stone is that damn good.

I happened to flip to one of the broadcasts last week, and got to experience a typical Stone-moment (from memory)

Bottom of the 11th(?), tie game

Hawk Harrelson: My broadcast partner, the Stone Pony himself went out on a limb during the break, saying that Juan Uribe (.221 avg, 11 hr) is going to win the game for us this inning

Stone: I just think this particular matchup is really favorable for the White Sox..

Hawk: Stone Pony, going out on a limb, and stickin' with it..

(At this point I'm saying to myself - watch out for Stone, Hawkeroo, this guy is downright spooky)

First out, man before Uribe singles to left, Uribe smacks one into the third row in left center. Ballgame.

Harrelson is great with his Hawk-isms when the Sox are winning, and excruciating when things are going bad, particularly what I've seen this season. DJ seems competent enough, but nothing special? I can't speak to Farmer and Singleton other than to say I bet Sox fans really miss John Rooney.

Santo would never work as a 'broadcaster' for any other team. He's a unique fit, for the career he had on the north side, and his obvious love for the team. And much like Stone helped Harry for much of Caray's last decade, don't sell Pat Hughes short on his skill making the broadcasts work with Ronny.

Not to derail, but Hughes is the best radio pbp man in baseball partly because of his work with Santo. As a Cards fan, I was ecstatic to have Rooney come down and take over the radio for the World Champs (he got to call the Sox victory in '05, then the Cards the very next year,) but the combination of Hughes' voice, his melodic, almost sing song inflection and his wonderful sense of humor gives him the gold medal in Awesome.

More on-topic: it's been stated to death, and it's true, that the Cubs TV crew is death, and Stoney would help that a lot. Plus it'd be a good reconciliatory move to the team's fanbase after he was run out of town for criticizing a bunch of lazy asses for doing things that would, for the most part, eventually get them run out of town. God forbid a TV analyst speak the truth about a club's inadequacies.

What would be interesting to see - if impossible - would be Dusty Baker as the color man. He's often good on ESPN, actually concentrating on the game rather than the random crap ESPN producers have their talent focus on, and he has a unique history with and knowledge of the organization. Plus his suits often look spectacular.

John Rooney is a nice guy and a pro's pro, just as smooth as can be and he's done a great job for the Cards.

Hughes and Santo have developed into a fine radio team. Cubs fans need radio people who are more into the team, who sound like they actually care what happens on the field. Vince Lloyd and the Good Kid were great at that back when the Cubs were very very bad.

Anyone who heard Ron Santo's wail years ago when Brant Brown dropped that flyball...you can't buy that, you can't go to school for that, it comes out of a heart that bleeds Cubbie blue. And that's more than good enough for this Cubs fan.

I acknowledge that Ron Santo "is" the Cubs, that he's going to die from diabetes, and that there's an outcry among the Cubbie faithful to get him in the HOF before he goes.

I'm listening to the radio because I don't get the games on tv. If I had a dollar for every time I heard Santo say some version of 'Would you look at that' while he's supposed to be providing commentary (AND without providing any further commentary on what he's seeing), I'd be rich.

As for my previous post of the Santo "Traded" card from 1974, I know it can't happen. I can wish, though.

I almost forgot about that. The Cubs would have to take on the perpetually injured Mark Sweeney, pay him 12.5 million over the next three years to sit on the bench/disabled list behind Derrick Lee. I think I'll pass.
