SAN ANTONIO -- Like most NBA fans, David Stern doesn't like the long wait between games this postseason. As the league's commissioner, he's going to do something about it.
"I can assure you it's going to be tighter next year," he said Thursday.
Stern said he reviewed a workup of the 2005 playoff schedule during his flight to San Antonio for Game 5 of the Spurs-Lakers series. It includes 14 days for a full series, down from as many as 17 this year, and less waiting time between rounds.
Because many NBA teams share arenas with NHL teams, there's the chance for conflict with the hockey playoffs.
"I don't envy our scheduling department," Stern said.
Another scheduling issue that personally affects Stern is the late hour that Western games finish for fans in the Eastern time zone, such as Minnesota's overtime victory in Sacramento on Monday night that ended about 2 a.m. in the East.
Stern said he was OK with it because moving up the 7:30 p.m. local start time "wouldn't be fair to their fans." He also noted that the ratings haven't suffered.
"All you can do is focus on who is watching when," he said. "The best judge is the ratings."
Among other topics, Stern said he believes NBA players will be safe at the Athens Olympics and if some players bow out for security concerns or any other reasons, he's confident there are enough other players capable of taking their places.
Stern also said the league and the players association met again this week to discuss the collective bargaining agreement. More meetings are being set up in hopes of reworking the existing deal.
"Both sides are determined to talk this through," he said. "If we had our druthers, we'd have a new deal this summer. It's going to be hard, but both sides seem committed to getting it done."

This story got Greenberg and Golic all riled up this morning. They were a little peeved that the AP is making this a story now, when Stern was on their program May 3rd and said the same thing, but it just wasn't reported. I figured they were just making it up, but they played the tape and he said those things 11 days ago. Nice job, AP.

Not a bad idea, especially considering that all the first round series save for Hornets vs. Heat were lopsided farces and largely a waste of time anyway.
On a side note, what's up with starting the second round in the west while the first round in the east is still going? I understand trying to speed things up, but when they first sat down to hammer out a schedule was this really a possibility they thought was a good idea? I don't think I've ever seen a game seven so irrelevant as that between Miami and New Orleans. They were headed to a sudden death game and all people could talk about were the starts of the two western conference semis. It's understandable given the relative starpower, but it's insulting to the two teams still fighting through a tough opening round matchup. The league should have seen this coming and done something about it.

No kidding the playoffs are taking too long. Triple overtime?!
I started to watch a movie around 9:45p or so, but I decided to watch "the last few minutes" of the Nets-Pistons game before I continued. An hour-plus later, needless to say, I won't be watching that movie tonight. Wow, what a game.
And, the most idiotic part about it: Should the Spurs and Pistons force Game 7's, there will be 4 days after Game 6 in each series. And, even more idiotic: Should the Spurs/Lakers and Kings/T'Wolves go 7, they'll be on the same night. And both will be Central Time Zone home courts, which means they'll be starting one of them at 9:50 local time (10 of 11 on the East Coast). Kings play all of their home games during the regular season 7:05 local start. Get to the playoffs, and its 7:52 local start (8 of 11 on the East Coast, 8 of 10 Central). Thus, by starting almost an hour later than the normal home time for a Kings or Laker game, they lose most of the audience East of the Mississippi. Considering the horrendous job Stern's disciple has done with the NHL the past decade, perhaps he wasn't a genius, but a man lucky enough to come to power in the middle of Magic/Bird and the beginning of Jordan.
(edited by redsoxnation on 15.5.04 0000) These are desperate times. And desperate times call for desperate measures. Thus, its time to break out the Cubs/White Sox/Red Sox call to put the Kaiser back on the throne.

It's only been one post-season with the spaced-out schedule, and Stern has already come out and said he's gonna fix it for next year. Dont you think you're over-reacting just a tad?
No kidding the playoffs are taking too long, but I'm not even talking about the number of days between games in a series, either. (Although I certainly agree with that fact).
I'm talking about all the fuckin' commercial breaks they have. It must've taken half a freakin' hour to play the last 30 seconds of the second overtime of the Pistons/Nets game. Each of the timeouts had to be followed by a freakin' four-minute commercial break. And it always happens at clutch time, too.
I mean, I understand the need to milk the drama. But dammmit, PLAY THE GAME ALREADY~!
