I just got done reading this, the latest by Stephen King. He's been pretty busy for a guy who retired a few years ago.

Very good story. You aren't sure what the main plot is; instead the focus is on the gradual change of the protaganist. The last half of the book is where the action is, but you won't mind.

607 pages of hardcover, but recommended for King fans.
