Completely and entirely false. The private sector cannot afford to gamble on the kind of cutting edge research done in the public sector, nor can the private sector afford to have the long development cycles of the public sector (which are often necessary when doing groundbreaking work) - which is why the private companies fund work done at Universities and Laboratories.
I have good friends who were in the private sector. They make a lot more money, but, for them, the research is typically less interesting. | DrDirt

Or the fact that a great deal of the success we owe in producing and maintaing a cheap, abundant food source can be laid at the feet of the USDA and Land Grant University System.
