Woo! My alma mater, North Central High School of Indianapolis, won their second 4A basketball championship tonight by dominating Warsaw, 95-74. (The first time they won the title was in '99 when I was a junior there; they also made it to the title game in '07, I believe).

Anyone here still follow their old high schools in sports? I'm looking to find me a T-shirt, myself.

The very notion of my old high school being good at anything besides volleyball blew my mind. Then they had to go and win a state title in basketball (casciac.org) and make the state championship game in football (casciac.org) a few years after I graduated. (It should be noted I was working for the local paper at the time, so they were fairly excited about the whole thing.)

The two public high schools in the city I went to high school take turns being awful in football. The big rivalry between them is probably in basketball. But I don't think we ever won a state championship in any team sports.

In Oshkosh, where I live now, they reguarly compete for the boys and girls basketball championships. Personally I can't stand high school basketball because of the lack of a shot clock (at least around here). In the Division 1 (largest schools) Girls championship game, the final score was 34 to 23. I'd rather jab my eyes out than watch something like that.

That might just have more to do with the nature of girls basketball. I covered one game where I'm not sure either team cracked 35... in overtime. One team seemed intent to use up a minute per possession, so I got to point that out in the story. (To be fair, the other team was missing a player who averaged around 30 a game, soooo...) It just seems like the halfcourt game's more prevalent in girls basketball than uptempo.

Godspeed, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Infantry, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, Wisconsin Army National Guard! Victory in Iraq!

Sure, I still follow the ol' alma mater. Always neat when I get to cover 'em in the regular season or playoffs, no matter what the sport.

I remember it being pretty awesome, shooting video on the sidelines of Camp Randall Stadium in Madison back in 2005, when they last won the WIAA Division 2 football state title.

My/my sister's alma mater (New Berlin Eisenhower) and my brother-in-law's (Pius) both won their respective divisions of girlball yesterday. Good enough. Our local school sucks eggs at football, but went to the state championship in soccer. Hopefully the football team will improve by the time my sons are there, because I've got an awesome nickname all ready for either of them: The Kohler Express.

UW-Whitewater is pretty good though!

My alma mater has made it to state in boys basketball once - my freshman year of college, 1998-1999. They led for about 31 minutes and 55 seconds of the championship game.

You can guess the 5 seconds they didn't lead. Bah.

Anyone here from Rock Falls, IL can suck it.

Years later the basketball program is in shambles as the soccer program absolutely dominates the state (or, at least, the smaller school class) in both genders.
