(From FoxNews.com)

George Lucas plans to rerelease the entire Star Wars saga in 3D starting in 2012. First up: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.

According to a report in industry newspaper The Hollywood Reporter, Lucas has held off on releasing 3D versions of the films until there were enough screens available to make Star Wars 3D a sizeable event.

At present, movies are limited to 2,000-2,500 3D locations, owing to an insufficient installed base of projectors and screens in the country, the paper reported. Movie theaters are adding 3D screens at a clip of 500 a month in the U.S., however, and foreign exhibitors also are pushing into 3D as quickly as possible now that financing for the installations is flowing.

By late winter or early spring in 2012, the exhibition industry should have all the 3D screens anyone could want for such a release.

Lucasfilm would use several higher-end conversion houses to work on the project, the paper reported.

Also pushing the timetable is a potential breakthrough for the 3D TV market. With Samsung selling more than 50,000 3D-equipped television sets and Sony recently sending its version to market, the home-viewing experience could be primed for 3D DVD versions of the films by the time the new theatrical releases have run their course.

Lucas purportedly is lining up the theatrical rereleases as a lead-in to the ultimate home-viewing experience. Beyond that, the property would launch to other 3D media.

Really wish they were going in order of original release as I'm not as jacked to see the prequels as I am to see "my" Star Wars in 3D. I'm sure I'll donate regardless to help ensure he gets to the Original Trilogy even though I'm sure it would get there wtih or without my help.

I'm really curious to see how prevalent the 3D technology becomes in home sets. I still don't even have an HD tv because all of my "old" sets work just fine and I don't see any reason to upgrade when I don't need to, but am curious how affordable or feasible that option will be when I do. Of course, I'll probably be upgrading to HD as everyone else is upgrading to 3D ;-)

Any W's have a 3D tv? Worth the money?

With movies adapted for 3-D (rather than being made with 3-D in mind), the 3-D is never worth it.

My biggest TV is 3-D capable (it's a 60" Toshiba). I haven't done anything beyond knowing that it's "capable".

Like you, I had no plans to go HD, because our other sets were "just fine". My wife and I spent New Year's Day at her sister's house, and watched the bowl games on a 60" HD set. Without any prompting from me, she declared that we needed one, because the viewing experience was so much better.

It probably goes without saying, but I'm curious...will the 3D versions of the Original Trilogy be the very originals, or will they be the Lucasized editions?

I'm not sure I really want to see Star Wars in 3D.

Think it's a terrible idea. Sick and tired of 3-D. And don't really have a huge desire to watch the Super Special Editions of the originals (or any versions of the prequels) again.

I'll be at all six opening weekend. Dammit, Lucas, you own my fucking soul, don't you?

For all the bitching, most of us are going to be there and probably with our kids since it might be the last time they get to see them in a theater. I also think 3-D is a fad, but we will see. If anything it will inflate the box office numbers to the point A New Hope will take over Avatar like they did with the Special Editions retaking ET.

I dunno - even with the inflated 3-D ticket prices, it's $300 million behind Avatar (a fact that makes my soul cry, believe me). It might be enough to overtake The Dark Knight and bump it up to #3, behind James Cameron's twin towers of mediocre (and bump Episode I into the top 5 and Episode III into the top ten) but I can't see it retaking the lead. Wow, I didn't think it was that bad. Its a rather depressing list considering Transformers: Revenge of the Falling and the Pirate sequel are now in the top 25.

It'll be the Lucasized versions (though, aren't they all Lucasized versions, even the originals?) the digital ships/characters/etc. will make it easier to do a #D conversion. Going by history, George will probably tweak the digital characters some more for the 3d conversion (e.g. the difference between theatrical & DVD versions of Jabba in the "Special Editions)

If you're going to look at all-time box office numbers, you really need to adjust for what the average ticket price was in that era.

I cannot see in 3D. I got a bum eye. But I would love to have little DolphDrew Jericho see those films in a theatre.

This is very true - and I'm happy to see that this could push it to #1 under those criteria.

http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/10/23/rumor-george-lucas-plotting-star-wars-movies/

Big unsubstantiated rumor making the rounds is George Lucas plotting a new Star Wars trilogy not about the Skywalkers set in the far future post-Return of the Jedi. Supposedly, the monies made from the Star Wars Saga in 3D will be funneled into making new Star Wars movies. Sounds like a lot of speculative, wishful-thinking horse shit, but no one who isn't George Lucas really knows for sure.

I saw this story earlier and dimly remembered the story about rumored plans for the series to be nine films long from the very start. It's the internet, so there's a page on wikipedia about it. Money quote:

By Lucasized, I mean things that he added to the mix and movies after theatrical release: like Hayden Christensen as the Anakin ghost as opposed to the original one.

3D or no 3D, the chance to see the original trilogy on a big screen again, with improved sound no less, will get me to the theater.

Buffy and Angel were great shows and I honestly wish they'd just retire the characters, period. This movie's such a cynical cash grab and the nerd outrage could get really ugly the closer this thing gets to completion.
