The Nemesis trailer playing before Austin Powers is laid out like an edgy thriller trailer. I thought some of the scenes they chose to focus on were unusual choices.

To me, the TNG movies have gotten better with each release. I didn't care for "Generations" at all. "First Contact" was good, but "Insurrection" is my favorite thus far. If you include all Trek films, it's my fourth favorite behind (in order) IV, II, and VI.

I think "Insurrection" is my favorite of the TNG movies because it put this crew in a good element for them. Besides...How can you not like a movie that gives Data a line about breasts firming up.

Maybe Star Trek XI will be a DS9 movie. I'd like to believe that, but they've been dickin' over DS9 so long that I wouldn't be surprised if they did it with the Voyager crew or another with TNG.

They've made a couple DS9 movies.

They just called it by its original title, BABYLON 5.

That is funny about DS9 and B5. But DS9 came out 2 years before B5. B5 is a very good show. Almost as good as DS9 equal to TNG and about 10 times better than Voyager. The 5 or so movies really make B5 a better show. Of course there was Crusade that sucked ass on all levels but still B5 is my second favorite Sci-Fi series.

I don't doubt you about that clown. I do seem to remember that DS9 came out in Nov. and B5 in May. People were talking about what a rip off B5 was. Then I saw that first 2 hour movie and while the basic plot was the same with a big space station they were a lot different.
By the way I just got the Sci-Fi channel so I missed the last B5 T.V. movie. Did they ever clear up the plague on the Earth? Did Lenier ever redeem himself for his 30 second moral failure?

When I say they debuted in the same year, I'm speaking in terms of seasons so I also don't doubt that one was in November and the other in May. Of course, the only reason I remember anything at all is because I have the TV guide from 1993 that introduced both shows, along with a few others you may or may not remember.

I agree. They need to give the whole Star Trek universe a break for a few years. It looks like the creative team is suffering from burnout.

About Janeway being promoted...this actually makes a lot of sense. Getting a ship back from the far reaches of the galaxy would be seen as a pretty heroic act by the Federation, wouldn't it? Not to mention all of the research and information about new species gained by Voyager during their...er, voyage. Chakotay and Torres probably had all charges dropped against them, since they were still Maquis outlaws when the series began.

Didn't Robert Picardo have a cameo in First Contact as the Enterprise emergency medical hologram?

I saw the Nemesis trailer, and correct me if I'm wrong, but is that Troi getting it on with somebody?? Riker?

dunno...cause I love all you guys and everything...been reading your posts on all the forums for about six months now and respect all your opinions...

...but damn if this isn't the geekiest thread I've ever come across! :)

Not only was Picardo in it, but Ethan Phillips (Neelix on Voyager) had a cameo as the nightclub owner or whatever on the holideck (when Picard runs the Dixon Hill program so he can kill a couple Borg).

You know that Dixon Hill Borg killing program was so LAME. The movie was good but come on the Borg can stop needle guns, disruptors, lasers, and phasers but can't stop a fucking tommy gun bullet? I can buy Worf and the rest killing them with swords and other cutting or blunt weapons but not some half ass early 20th century guns. And if a tommy gun worked why didn't they just replicate some M-16s or some even better rifles?
But the cameos were pretty funny. Especially the Dr. explaining skin rashes to the Borg. You know I really liked the Dr. by far the best Voyager character. Of course that's not saying much since only the Dr, Kes, and 7 of 9 were cool.

In response to the statement that there were only two legitimate promotions in TNG (both given to Worf):

Well, I'm not sure what you call legitimate promotions. But what, no love for Geordi? He got promoted twice, from Lieutenant (j.g.) to Lieutenant and then to Lieutenant Commander. Troi got bumped up from Lieutenant Commander to Commander. Wesley was moved up from Acting Ensign to Ensign. Riker himself was even briefly promoted from Commander to Captain during the initial Borg crisis, but after Picard was saved, the idiot just let them bust him back down in rank. Hey now-- Kirk, Spock and Scotty were all captains on the same ship, why couldn't Riker have kept his rank?

Onto other topics concerning Nemesis:

I can't stand Wesley Crusher. I truly, truly can't. He's on this ship with 1,016 people on it, including an android, the best engineer in Starfleet, and one hell of a Tactial officer, yet time and time again the kid comes up with some stunt to save the ship. They tried explaining it away by saying that he perceived things beyond normal human comprehension, but... please. Plus, the asshole lied about the circumstances regarding the death of his friend at the Academy! Yeah, Locarno asked him to, but Wesley didn't show that he had a spine until Picard threatened him. “Either you tell them the truth, or I will.” Way to go, Wesley. You're such a hero for telling the truth to avoid getting in any worse trouble than you were already.

I think it absolutely bites that Janeway is in this movie at all, let alone an admiral who now outranks Picard. On the pantheon of Star Trek captains, Kirk, Picard and Sisko are one-two-three in close order, while Janeway is a way distant fourth. Of course, we just had to get on with our “obligatory dicking over of DS9”, didn't we? I hope DS9 doesn't get dicked over further by having to wait too much longer to come out on DVD. God knows I'm screaming bloody murder if Voyager gets the DVD releases before DS9-- and someone has to die if the complete Enterprise series comes out before DS9.

They toss in the most boring and annoying Star Trek captain of all-time, but they couldn't have added one DS9 character? Kira? Bashir? Anybody? Granted, several of them went their separate ways in the finale (Sisko walked with the Prophets, O'Brien went to the Academy and Worf became the ambassador to Kronos), but I'm sure they could have come up with something.

I, too, fear that this movie will break the “even-numbered movies rule all” tradition. But I'll catch it in theaters anyway, hopefully they will prove me wrong.

When did LaForge get promoted to Cmdr? I forgot that he went from Lt. to Lt. Cmdr. but did he start as a J.G.?
I agree about Wesley being a punk bitch.
A lot of the annoying plot hole rank problems of TNG could have been fixed by not making them the flagship. Picard was the best Captain, Riker was the best XO, Data the best helmsman, Geordi the best engineer, and hell Guinan was the best time traveling super psychic bartender in Starfleet.
If E/D would have just been a ship then all that B.S. wouldn't have been a problem. DS9 had a good crew so the fact that promotions were uncommon wasn't a problem but every single officer on E were the best in Starfleet.

Sorry about the spoiler space.
If you'll remember, Geordi wasn't even chief engineer until season 2. There was a revolving door of chief engineers in season 1, and Geordi was at the conn then (in crimson, even). I've looked at some pictures my "Star Trek TNG Companion" has for the first season, and it looks like Geordi has a solid pip and a hollow pip, but it's difficult to tell.

Yes, Teapot, that's correct. In season one, both Worf and La Forge were junior-grade lieutenants. They even had a discussion between the two of them about being junior officers.

By the start of season two, they had both been promoted to lieutenant.

By the start of season three, La Forge was promoted to lieutenant commander.

Anyway...

The typical logic when talking about Riker is that if he was the “best” exec in the fleet, he'd at least have made a decent captain. He was offered three promotions, all of which he turned down (he even turned down one after saying his “until next time”s to Troi in “The Icarus Factor”), and as you'll remember Shelby was brought in to be Picard's new exec in the event that Riker transferred to the Melbourne as its new captain.

Of course, had Riker done so, he would have perished at Wolf 359.

Regarding promotions in Deep Space Nine:

It was funny, O'Brien spent his TNG tenure referred to as “Chief O'Brien” but with the ranks of Lieutenant. Sisko referred to O'Brien as an ensign in season two of DS9 before they settled on the rank of “Chief Petty Officer”. What I can't understand is why O'Brien was never supposedly an officer, and why by the end of the series even Nog outranked him.

Other promotions--

When first we see Sisko in “Emissary” during Wolf 359, he is a lieutenant commander. When we flash forward to the current time, he is a commander. He got promoted to captain in the final episode of the third season.

Bashir started off as a lieutenant (j.g.) in season one, and was later promoted to lieutenant and I believe lieutenant commander.

Nog became a cadet at Starfleet Academy and was pressed to leave the Academy earlier than normal because of the war, so he was promoted to ensign.

Major Kira is promoted to colonel (the apparent Bajoran equivalent of commander) before the seventh season.

Jadzia Dax starts as a lieutenant and is later promoted to lieutenant commander.

Ezri Dax starts out as an ensign and is pretty much promptly promoted to lieutenant (j.g.).

So other than Odo, I believe every original DS9 character was promoted at some point during the show. So I wouldn't go so far as to say the promotions were uncommon, they just didn't seem to be overly consistent.

I think O'Brien was a Warrant Officer. That would explain why he called everything in uniform Sir but still had a lot of command. His position would be a Lt. but his official rank would be a CPO or Master Chief. It's hard to say since navy enlisted ranks are weird and there is a lot to do with who is most senior on board ship. The Navy is big on titles as well as ranks.

Nuh-uh. No way is Janeway #4.
1. Picard
2. Kirk
3. Sisko (my favorite)
4. Scotty (the miracle worker of the first 2 Enterprises)
5. Sulu (Given the most powerful ship in Starfleet)
6. Spock
7. Decker (Was given Starfleet's flagship, til Kirk busted him down to take over)
8. Riker (Temporary)
9. Data (Temporary)
10.Janeway

And that's being kind. Although I do understand the promotion to Admiral, since she led Voyager out of the Delta/Gamma/Whatever quadrant, and destroyed the Borg Queen the second time.

i just think it's odd that thy have no enlisted people in starfleet other than o'brien...

even in the old RPG, there wasn't clear as to what the enlisted grades were nor what the insigna looked like...it was alluded that the enlisted wore brass pips, as opposed to the silver pips the officers wore...

don't get me started on the admirals on TNG...ever other show or season they have different uni's or insigna...
