University of South Carolina that is. He agrees in principle to coach the Gamecocks. On the contingency Holtz decides to step down.

I think it's a curious choice, only because I don't think South Carolina is stocked full of football talent (looks like one player in the top 100 recruits), and what talent there is, doesn't seem to flock to South Carolina. The #1 high school player in the state has verbally committed to Oklahoma, and SC's verbal list at the moment is chock full of 3 and 2 star guys.

Now that could be because of the lack of success of the program, but changing these trends can be very difficult. Spurrier could bring in some of the top tier recruits because of his name alone, but he's going to have to put in the time to get some of the big boys, and we all know how he feels about recruiting. He's going to have to put a stop to talent raids.

Tennessee has gotten alot of the recruits from the state of South Carolina.

The one person that's probably sweating here now is Tommy Bowden at Clemson. He has to now compete with Spurrier for the state's recuits too.

But, as soon as he gets a chance, he is going to recruit the hell out of Florida again.

This is a really awkward situation for everybody. Spurrier is the new coach for a vacancy that does not exist. Except that it has been made public. Of course, Tommy Tuberville was "replaced" by Bobby Petrino last year for a day too before everybody realized what was going on.

As you might imagine, things here are absolutely crazy -- I've never seen anything like it.

As a Gamecock fan, I'm thrilled. There's much more talent here than you might guess. And if Spurrier can close the border and keep recruits home (in addition to pulling in some kids USC never would have had a shot at) he can win here and win big.

You have to remember, Florida had won absolutely nothing in football before Spurrier took over there. Heck, the guy won an ACC title at Duke.

The big questions, should he take over, are whether or not he's going to put in the time required and whether or not his legacy took any kind of hit with the NFL failure.

Regardless, it's a madhouse in the Palmetto State.

I dont think that would happen here. Holtz seems to want Spurrier to have the job. They are basically buddies from what I understand.

Also, South Carolina usually turns out pretty good football talent. They may be down this year, but over the years the state has a reputation for producing good player. The problem was they couldnt keep it. But that will change under Spurrier, believe me. There isnt a High School QB today that wouldnt to play for Spurrier.

Myrtlye Beach is in South Carolina, thus, Spurrier has the requisite golf course.
Think Mack Brown is starting to breathe again knowing Spurrier isn't on the doorstep any longer?

South Carolina is a great choice for him. Tons of talent there(I don't mean in state, but it's not bad). He's close to several other great states to recruit in. And the school has some tradition to it.

It's one of the few schools that I think can easily be turned into a big winner.

The fun thing will be watching the Gator fans if the does it and their team continues to get worse. Wow, the first time those teams go at it will be a hell of a game to watch.

NOOO! As a Gators fan I can say I'm ok with Spurrier not coming back. But going to another team in the division? That sucks. And South Carolina does have talent, espeically on the offensive side, Spurrier just needs to get his QB. Next year might be difficult because of the change but his second year they will make some noise. So now the Gators have to play Georiga, Tennessee, Spurrier and FSU every year. Damn.

One question I have is how strict are USC with academics with their football players? I *heard* that it's pretty relaxed there which of course could be an advantage for Spurrier... I also heard he still has a lot of connections in the state of Florida and won't be shy in using them.

smark/net attack wienerville advisory holds at ORANGE alert - High (JBL is STILL WWE champion and now smarks arch enemy HHH is the World Champion. Major red threat, but the undercard seems okay. The alert holds... for now)- 9/19

On par with the rest of the SEC schools, IMO -- with the notable exception of Vanderbilt. Generally, we'll find a way to get a guy in if it's somebody we really want.
