They needed a new main event and Kurt didn't have anywhere to go on RAW if he wasn't going to be the challenger - EXCEPT, where does that leave his match with HBK on Monday?
Odd to go from injury prone Batista to not-always-healthy Kurt, but then this may not be the long term plan, if one even exists at the moment. Short term, it sounds like they're still going with Mark Henry challenging for the title at the Rumble.
Nunzio and Vito defeated Danny Doring and Scott Wright.
Ken Kennedy came out with his new T-Shirt to push the sales. He forced Tony Chimell to wear the shirt.
Jamie Noble beat Scotty 2 Hotty with a Dragon Sleeper.
The Gymini defeated Billy Baxx and Lee Great.
Paul Burchill pinned Nick Berk.
Mexicools beat the Dicks after Road Warrior Animal came out and shoved one of the Dicks off the top, setting up Crazy hitting a top rope swinging DDT for the pin. Animal then laid out the Mexicools afterwards.
WWE World champion Batista came to the ring with Teddy Long and announced he was injured last Sunday against Mark Henry. He said that he will not be able to work through the injury and he'll be out because he needs surgery. He said when he won the title, his friend Paul told him to enjoy to enjoy the ride and was said he was proud to represent the WWE and the fans. He said he had no choice but to surrender the World title and handed it to Long. He said that he will return and he will be World champion again and until then whoever has the title is only holding a belt because they didn't beat Batista.
They showed Batista leaving with agents and officials wishing him good luck on his recovery. Batista hugged Rey Mysterio goodbye.
In the ring, Teddy Long announced a Battle Royal for the WWE World title.
Randy Orton asked Long to postpone his match against Chris Benoit so he could compete in the battle royal. Long turned him down and said he and Benoit would only be in one match tonight.
Orton vs. Chris Benoit: Nick Patrick ejects Booker T and Sharmell. Patrick was bumped. Orton went for the RKO but Orlando Jordan ran out. Orton hit him. Benoit locked on the crossface and Orton tapped but there was no ref. Booker hit Benoit with the belt and Orton made the cover. Booker was announced as the new United States champ. A long match.
Backstage, Roddy Piper came across JBL and Jillian Hall. JBL asked Piper to have him as a guest on Piper's Pit instead of the Boogeyman. Piper turned him down but changed his mind after JBL insulted him.
They aired a video package on El Paso honoring the memory of Eddie Guerrero.
Piper's Pit: Piper noted the first Pit was here in Philly 22 years ago. He went to introduce JBL who came out before he had the chance. JBL ripped on Batista giving up the belt because he was hurt. JBL cut a long promo with Piper pretending to fall asleep. Piper began making fun of Jillian Hall's mole. Boogeyman came out. JBL shoved Hall into Boogey, who bit off her mole. She ran away screaming.
Main Event Battle Royal: Animal, Simon Dean, Nunzio, Vito. Paul London, Brian Kendrick, Orlando Jordan, William Regal, Paul Burchill. MNM. Mark Henry, The Mexicools, JBL, Matt Hardy, Rey Mysterio, Sylvan. Bobby Lashley were in the ring when Kurt Angle, with Daivari, was announced as the surprise 20th competitor. He threw JBL out immediately. Henry and Angle brawled on the floor. Henry pressed and dropped him on the announcing table. It came down to Henry and Rey. The entire place chanted for Eddie Guerrero. Rey got a ton of offense but was tossed out. Angle returned to the ring and faced off with Henry. Angle eventually eliminated him. Kurt Angle is your new WWE World champion. They had fireworks and confetti for the win.
I wonder how they will explain how Angle got in this thing.
BTW, on a COMPLETELY unrelated note, here's the trailer for Kane's new movie:
Why not go w/ Rey? Wins the belt for his fallen friend, and goes on to defeat the man (Henry) who put him on the shelf. Who knows how long Batista will be out, so they wouldn't have to worry about the Rey/Batista situation for a while. Plus, you get some fresh matchups for the belt (vs. any of JBL, Taker, Orton, Benoit, Booker).
Also, Knoble/Scotty again? They did that last week. Hopefully we get more of the same (Knoble kicking the crap out of Scotty, getting the decisive win).
Wow, now I wish I'd gone, if only to say I'd seen Piper in person. And the "historical importance" of the show.
During RAW, I was thinking about what a deep, main-event level roster they have over there when compared to the slim pickings on SD! and figured they would have to work some way to move at least one of those guys back over.
P.S. - the local news just showed Phils manager Charlie Manuel watching Nunzio & Vito's match from the front row.
You'd think Rey could pull a half decent 2** match out of Mark Henry, why not give the man the title? What does Kurt Angle have to do with SD! anyway? He's a RAW dude, everyone knows it and this is a complete sham and a shame. Orton vs Rey at Wrestlemania would have had some hella heat.
The only good thing on this show sounds like Piper and Boogeyman biting off the mole.
Urgh. I just knew that after blowing MITB on the end of New Year's Revolution, that they'd have to break continuity in order to move someone over. Sure, Kurt deserves it... but I can't wait to hear how they're going to explain this one.
And I don't get the booking in the seventh match at all. I thought for sure that we'd get a DDQ or something to force the end of the series to Royal Rumble... and why are they putting the belt on Booker when he's injured and not over as a heel? I have a bad feeling that this is it for Benoit, folks...
smark/net attack Advisory System Status is: Elevated (Holds; July 5, 2005) It's good to see that the WWE isn't backing away from Batista or Cena. There's still some questions lingering over a few of the draft moves they either made or didn't make (Jericho being a prime example), but the stage is set for a solid run to Summerslam that may send the indicator down. The longer Triple H stays away is also a plus...
They could have just had Edge use his MITB to take the title from Batista after Batista was beat down again by Mark Henry or by immediately beating someone else from Smackdown that won the Battle Royal for the title.
First of all, that would have made more sense storyline wise since the MITB contract was for the World Heavyweight Championship and not the WWE championship. This was even mentioned during the draft lottery but, typical of the WWE, it was forgotten and/or ignored immediately by the writers.
Plus, there are plenty of opponent possibilities set up for Edge on SmackDown. It was Edge that started the recent Raw vs. Smackdown war when he showed up on SmackDown to attack both Rey Misterio and JBL during a match. That sets up heat between Edge and the entire SmackDown locker room. It's also an incentive for JBL to challenge Edge in a heel vs. heel situation and also sets up issues for a feud with Rey Misterio. Misterio and Edge also have a past together as Tag Team champions.
Then, there's a similar past with Benoit as tag champs on Raw which led to Edge turning heel by attacking Benoit.
And, of course, there is the whole Edge vs Matt Hardy situation.
That would've been perfect, especially since it seems like Edge is only going to get a month-long title reign on Raw, but Batista was injured the same night that Edge own the title, so they had already used up that option.
I'm assuming that the oft-rumored Triple H vs. John Cena WWE Title bout is still on. That means that Edge loses at the Royal Rumble...due to Matt Hardy interference (c'mon, it's been a few months since they last threw down, and Matt referred to Lita as "the thing he loved most" and Edge referred to the WWE Title as "the thing he loves most", so it makes sense that Hardy would get some payback). What else could Edge do at Mania?
But...since Kurt Angle's still a heel...somewhat, who gets the title shot at WrestleMania? Benoit y Mysterio seem like the only options face-wise, but that means completely abandoning the rumored Orton Royal Rumble push/win. I think having either Benoit or Mysterio win the title in honor of Eddie Guerrero would be a nice end to the "season", and I'm leaning towards Benoit since he's a proven draw as champion (not to say Mysterio can't draw, but he hasn't had the opportunity to).

The WWE must really think that Smackdown is their B show.I mean, no one on the entire roster deserves to be champion? And of all the people to have jump brands why make it the guy that had switched the most recently?

They were also running really thin on the main-event level, since Batista and Booker are both nursing injuries. Angle makes more sense than anyone else, as he's Smackdown alumni.
And frankly, I don't care what they do if it gives me the shot to see one more Angle vs. Benoit matchup.
I wonder if Kurt will even stay exclusively on Smackdown, for any significant amount of time. Vince did say on Raw that next week was supposed to feature HBK vs Angle. Does this turn of events means that matchup is thrown to the winds?
Not a bad show at all.
-Flair does a nice blade job to start the show.(Hopefully McMahon okayed this one.)
-The Rock/Austin vs Booker/Bossman was as good as you are going to get with the Bossman involved.
-What was up with the Storm/Edge match?
