Ok, I've been long off the Spidey train since...that one infamous event that shall not be named. But then they announced Ends of the Earth and I thought it'd be a good time to get back on board.
So the idea is that Doctor Octopus is about to die...again. For realsies, this time. So he's launching one final plot for world domination, alongside the Sinister Six. And man, have I been really happy with the result of this story so far.
Yes, in this story, the Sinister Six have essentially hit the big time. They're not just mere Spidey villains anymore, but they're now full-blown threats to the world. The last issue saw the Sinister Six go toe-to-toe with the Avengers...and WIN! And by gawd, they earned their victory, outwitting the Avengers (save for Spidey, who's fully prepared for all of them) at every turn.
If you're a big fan of the Sinister Six, this is your story. Shed a tear for this ragtag group, because they're finally getting their due. We're two issues in and I'll be along for the rest of the ride.
I love me some Sinister Six, but I don't know if I can buy a Spidey book again. Weird, hearing the Avengers do the job when Avengers vs. X-Men is Marvel's Giant OMG Series this year. I also don't buy Dock Ock biting it either. I have the issue where Kaine kills him and then he magically returns. I think Doc was banging a Ms. Marvel clone or something at the time, too. Giant step up from Aunt May. Still, I'll wait til the trade comes out. Kaine, damn talk about a character that started off interesting then circled the drain.

Great review of the story so far, and I'm absolutely going to find this when it's done and in a trade. A lot of times when a big comics event happens some B or C-level villains get promoted and it feels stupid. I haven't read any of this yet, but the Sinister Six getting promoted to A-level for a big run at the Avengers feels like it could work. That might just be the 20+ year Spider-Man fan in me, but nevertheless it's a great idea for a story.
I can buy Electro and Sandman as major threats (didn't Electro's power level become increased to almost Magneto-like control of electricity a few years ago?) but c'mon, this version of the team still features Chameleon, Mysterio and Rhino. I can't see how those three are anything but dead weight in a battle against the Avengers.
(Granted, I haven't read the story. Or seen what Avengers lineup was defeated.)

In a comic book? Horror of horrors!
Like a giant egg or something.
Yes, egg-like, but with tentacles. Almost like a squid, or maybe, hey! octopus-y.
Doc Ock really shouldn't be played for laughs. Spidey can make fun of him, but there is a reason he is the leader of a group of people some of whom would just outright slaughter a school bus. The design is less Octopus and more Humpty Dumpty with the mechanical arms from Spiderman 2.

It was the main lineup: Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Spider-Woman, and Red Hulk.
On paper, it sounds a bit ludicrous. I mean, Rhino took on Thor and won! Let me repeat that. Rhino went one-on-one with the God of Thunder...and WON!
And yet, the explanations for these clean wins were pretty satisfying. This is already an easy recommendation to pick up in trade.
Going back to the "upgrading C level villain" part of this, take a look at Fraction's Iron Man, where the Mandarin has raised the power levels of people like the Melter, the Living Laser and Whirlwind.

I have to actually read this, because there has to be a huge reason for the Six to be taking out what is Marvel's Big Four right now in Cap, Red Hulk, Thor and Iron Man. I like Hawkeye, but I can see him losing to Sandman or Electro. Spiderwoman has and will always be trash in my mind. So, I can see that, but the original four Avengers and Spiderman, I mean they should clean house even if the heroes are at half power. Red Hulk should swallow Chamelon whole and shit him out.
I don't mind C level villains getting a shot up and if someone enhances their powers that makes sense. Well as much sense as comics make. What annoys me is taking a guy who constantly loses and then all of the sudden is a BA. I understand sometimes heroes have a bad day, shit Peter's entire story is I don't have good days and when I do, I am up there when I am not well that is how people like Mysterio beat me and then I get him the next issue. That is ok, but to turn a someone like Stiltman into a major foe is a bit much. Which really that is the level some of the Sinister Six is on. Rhino over Thor? Really?

Spider-Woman is basically Spider-Man without the webshooters and with the ability to fly. Not a loser, but she's never really been written as a winner. And Rhino's a threat simply because, in the Marvel universe, Super-Strength = Threat. Against Thor.......to quote Galactus in Marvel v. Capcom, he's an ant fighting the sun.
Just wanted to defend those two before saying I wouldn't wipe my ass with this story. Chameleon is basically Rich Little. Aunt May took his ass once. AUNT MAY. She's 4 days older than sand and she owned him. Mysterio? A kid's party magician on his good days. This story should've started and ended with Jarvis slamming the door in their faces.
