First we were told that Gregg Williams was a shoe-in for the Redskins job. Then they interview a bunch of people, and Williams took the DC position with the Jaguars.

Then after the Super Bowl we were told that Steve Spagnuolo was destined to be the next head coach of the Redskins.

But now Spagnuolo has taken himself out of the running for the Redskins job.

So now they're reporting that the top candidates are Ron Meeks, DC of the Colts, and retreads Jim Fassel and Steve Mariucci.

I realize he hasn't exactly been lighting the world on fire lately, but no love for Brian Billick? I mean, the guy does have a Super Bowl ring and deserves just as much consideration as these retreads.

This reminds me of the Bucs' head coach search in 2002. Of course, they fired Dungy, while Gibbs retired, so it's slightly less embarrassing.

Maybe the Skins can sign Billick and beat the Ravens in the Super Bowl next year.

Nah, they'd have to buy Marvin Lewis out of Cincinnati, and then beat the Bengals.

Williams? Nah
Fassel? Nope
Spagnuolo? Uh-uh
Mariucci? A late addition, but no dice.
Billick? Some talk, but nothing out of it.
Ron Meeks? Mentioned, but not likely
Pete Caroll? Not going to leave USC for Dan Snyder

And the winner is...

Jim Zorn (sports.espn.go.com)

Yes, THAT Jim Zorn, the one who was hired as offensive coordinator 2 weeks ago. A roundabout way to get there, but eventually, the Redskins got their man.

Also, I'd hazard a guess that this might have been Jim Fassel's last chance to get a head coaching gig, and that surprises me. He wasn't anywhere near a failure with the Giants, a couple division titles and a Super Bowl trip. If he's not passing on his own free will, I'm surprised he hasn't gotten another shot at running a team.

For reasons of creative incompetence, this space will be left blank. Advertising opportunities are avaliable though!!! Contact (Number removed due to pending litigation) for details!

It isn't so much Fassel's Giants run that does him in, but the abysmal job he did as Ravens' offensive coordinator has a lot of teams avoiding him like the plague.

I'm underwhelmed already. He doesn't even know our team colors, which are even a nickname for the team. We are the Burgundy and Gold, not the Maroon and Black. (washingtonpost.com) Yeesh.

I'd say everyone on that list but Brunell.
