Well, I wouldnt say the yankees choked, I would say boston played the best four games of thier lives. Held close when they had to, and tonite, beat the crap out of them.

Congrats to the Red Sox, here's hoping you lose in four to the Cards!

Stagger, how can you say that the Yanks didn't choke? You're talking about "the greatest sports franchise in history" here losing 4 games straight after winning the first 3. It's a total choke job. This was the best "team" that money could buy but they couldn't beat a bunch of long-haired, bearded, self-proclaimed idiots? Please. They choked harder than any team in the history of sports. The Red Sox were done. If you don't believe me, check out the sports pages on the net. ESPN said they were done. Hell, until last night, the guy from the "Daily Quickie" said they were done. I even said it if you read the Yanks-Sox ALCS thread. No one gave them a chance, and by some stroke of luck, skill, and guts they managed to pull this one out.

Not only did they "hold close when they had to", but they made Rivera blow two straight save opportunities. To trivialize their win by saying "Congrats to the Red Sox, here's hoping you lose in four to the Cards!" is terrible. The 2004 Boston Red Sox accomplished something that no professional baseball team has managed to accomplish in the history of baseball. Think about that. And they did it against their most hated rivals. Here's to the Red Sox drinking champagne in the Yankee locker room.

Give credit where credit is due, Lowe making 4 million a year; 1 hit 1 BB through 6 innings of play. Totally outclassing a combined 30 million dollars worth of Steinbriners boys. Now how many were expecting this guy to choke with every pitch?

Amazing, Amazing series, you'll remember this for your entire lives. And if there is every any question what the greatest game in the world is, hell screw football, screw X-Games, there should be no question, it's baseball.

BTW, wouldn't it be a nice touch if the Astros win. Bush's backyard team Houston, versus Kerry's Red Sox.

Have I been here before?

1986: The Red Sox, facing elimination and trailing in the ninth, make an epic comeback in extra innings to extend the ALCS.
2004: The Red Sox, facing elimination and trailing in the ninth, make an epic comeback in extra innings to extend the ALCS.

1986: The Red Sox improbably come back and win the ALCS.
2004: The Red Sox improbably come back and win the ALCS.

1986: The Houston Astros and the team with the best record in the NL have an almost-as-epic NLCS, one that gets overlooked because of the ALCS.
2004: The Houston Astros and the team with the best record in the NL have an almost-as-epic NLCS, one that gets overlooked because of the ALCS.

As I think about the Sox beating the Yankees and celebrating a series win in the Yankee Stadium infield, I've been constantly reminded by a little voice in my head..."It's not over. This is NOT the ultimate goal. There are still four more games to win."

FINISH THE JOB.

With apologies to Ernest Lawrence Thayer -

Oh, all across the Red Sox Nation the sun is shining bright.
The band is playing loudly, and everyone's heart is light.
And die hard fans are laughing,
and with pride the children shout.
For there is finally joy in Boston,
the mighty yankees have crapped out.

Would you believe our TV station did its "Emergency Broadcast System" test with two outs in the ninth???
They came out of it into commercials and I had no clue what was going on. Did we win? Change pitchers? Turns out it was just bringing in Embree. 24 hours in the day and they have to do their required test THEN??????

Go Red Sox.
After this series, anything is possible.

Way to go Sox, that was *awesome*! Hope they win it all! Any preference for Bostonians as to whom they want to face? Personally, I think Houston would be the bigger story (Clemens comes home again), but the Cards lineup is the bigger challenge.

The thing I am most happy about is getting to see that nifty Sox pattern on the Fenway infield again. That rules.

How is wanting your hometown team to make and then win the world series trvializing what the red sox did? Hell I was happy to see the sox pull off the improbable comeback, but I'd be lying if I didnt say that if they were playing the cardinals I would want the cards to sweep them (though frankly I got a bad feeling about this happening, teams that comeback like that have an annoying tendancy to finish the job).

Catch The Thrill on "Pick of the Week": taped Tuesdays at Planet Magic in Denmark, WI; on the air Sundays @ 1 am on WB-14!

And I'm spent.

After that game, I just had to meet my Boston-born Irish roommate out for a pint o'Guiness. Ho-lee crap. This really is Return of the Jedi:

Vader: "Theo...you were right. Tell the Chowds...you were right."

I can just see the Sox's shuttle (tyridium) bus pulling out through a wall of flame as Yankee Stadium explodes behind 'em as Schilling yells, "YEE-HA!"

Ding-dong, the Empire is dead. Long live the Red Sox Alliance!

(Of course, now the question is, which ex-Brewer will do the J-O-B to Boston: Cards catcher Mike Matheny, or Astros skipper "Scrap Iron" Phil Garner?)

THAT's the other thing I forgot to mention. You're Theo Epstein. You're 30. You're the GM of the Red Sox at 29. You fine-tune the team in 2004, including trading its fixture at shortstop, until you've got a team you feel right about. Your team just beat the Yankees in unprecedented fashion.

If your Red Sox team actually WINS the World Series, where do you go from there? You will NEVER be able to top that, even with more Red Sox World Championships. I guess you could try it again with the Cubs, but other than that, you've achieved the greatest thing you could ever achieve in your profession. At 30.

This is one of those "good for baseball" things. This was the lead story on virtually EVERY media outlet overnight and this morning. All this publicity and excitement is good for the overall sport.

But..it also means that baseball fans are subjugated to countless reports from brainless "reporters" for the next week. For instance, Denver's KOA radio station had this as their lead story all morning long. Every time it was mentioned, they stated that this was "the first time in 80-some years that the Red Sox have gone to the World Series". Embarassing. KOA is the big daddy of news radio out here and their signal is picked up as far away as Tulsa or Montana.

Now we get to sit back and hear the sappy attempts of unqualified hacks writing about the 'futility of the Boston franchise and the resolve of the 2004 Sox'. Rick Reilly will have a piece about this. The beat writer of your local hockey team may even write about it, out of boredom. The over/under on Stephen King's eventual penning of such a column is 2 days.

I'm not going to spout off some elitist line about how this is "only for baseball fans...you guys weren't here all season long, so go frick yourselves". My point is: welcome aboard to all the baseball bandwagoners. Please THINK before you speak.

Oh yeah..and how ironic/funny/interesting is that that the Yankeeswere done in, in game 7, by their famous short-porch in right field? Also, is it too pessimistic to believe that Curt Schilling will be hobblingaround in 20 years with only one foot?

I wanted to speak on this, because this was an AMAZINGLY callous and fake ad by Nike. It was a shrewd business move (Nike ad man: "No, we're not advocating that we want the Sox to win the WS...'Just Do It' has always been our tag line).

I think that most of us can read between the lines and see a company that shouldn't be advocating one team over another DOING EXACTLY THAT. I was so disgusted by this phony sentiment that I seriously might go out of my way to never buy a pair of Nike footwear ever again. That was such pandering to the highest order.

RORY: So, is this party Grandma's having going to be a big deal?
LORELAI: Not really. The government will close that day. Flags will fly at half-mast. Barbra Streisand will give her final concert...again.
RORY: Uh-huh.
LORELAI: Now, the Pope has previous plans, but he's trying to get out of them. However, Elvis and Jim Morrison are coming and they're bringing chips.
