You could see the writing on the wall here once Bennett took over as owner and it seems like the city of Seattle did nothing about it. OKC has a fairly new arena and proved it can support a basketball team. Maybe another team will relocate to Seattle once they have their arena issues cleared up.

You're kind of jumping the gun, there. All Bennett did is say he's going to move the team. There is still a lot more to be done. I really think in the end the arena deal will get done and Bennett will sell the team to local owners, and buy a different team to move.

The Seattle market is too valuable for the NBA to lose, especially if they aren't moving to a market that is anywhere close to the size. I honestly believe this is all just a big ploy by the NBA to ultimately get the arena they want built and I think it is going to work. Way to many smart people (and I include the OKC guys in that group) are acting way too dumb for me to believe the team is going to be moving.

Is attendance a problem in the existing arena? If the guy has a bad lease, it sounds like he can renegotiate in a couple of years when the current one expires. I know, they need more skyboxes to "compete". It's been tiring though the years to hear sports team owners whine about needing public subsidies, mostly because they know the voters would have an issue with the politicians who let their beloved team escape (rather than some legitimate economic benefit to the taxpayers).

And now that most of the teams have got taxpayers to buy their new stadiums, the games are starting to migrate to platforms like NFL Network, NBA TV, YES Network - and even among mainly public institutions here, we fans are now expected to pony up extra for the Big Ten Network.

In other words, I'm about out of sympathy for any sports owner that runs off for even one dollar of public money. If he's paying for his own arena in OKC, and his lease is up.. then it's a free country to be a dick, and screw the loyal fanbase you'd be leaving behind.

Jim Caple does a pretty good job of summing it all up.

Actually, I've never had as much fun watching a Heat season as I've had this year, and it's not just because they're winning, because sometimes the Zo-Hardaway-Mashburn teams were difficult to watch, and those teams won in the regular season, at least ...
