Go buy Final Fantasy Origins and play Final Fantasy (the original game) first. They make the "Origins" package for playstation, I'm pretty sure. The disc also has the second game in the series on it.

Eh, I could never get passed FF1 on the NES. Just really didn't like it. I thought Dragon Quest was a hell of a lot better.
It doesn't really matter where you start because none of the games are related to each other(except X-2 of course). But some have harder "systems" to work with. I'd say FF4 would be a good start, although I think it can be a bit harder than some of the others.

Final Fantasy VI may quite possibly be the zenith of video gaming. It has an incredible story, nice difficulty, and an incredible score. The Opera House is one of defining moments of the series.

For somebody who has never played FF games before, I would go with FF9. It has great graphics, a relatively straight forward leveling up and ability system, and the storyline isn't very convoluted or difficult to follow. Not to mention that it has the most references to past FF games than any other, so it's a good way to get familiar with all of the various things that many FF games have in common. After that, as long as he/she doesn't mind the slight downgrade in graphics quality, I would say that FF7 should be next in line. And if graphics are an important quality to this person, wait until you can get FF10.

But, definately don't start someone new to FF games off with one of the earlier ones. Especially FF1. Unless they are truly committed to getting into all of the FF games, that would turn off most video game players of today. FF4, 5, or 6 would all be a better choice if an older game is desired, with FF6 on the top of that list, of course!

David Spade teaches us an Important Lesson:

Joe Dirt: So you're gonna tell me that you don't have no black cats, no roman candles, or screaming mimis?
Kicking Wing: No.
Joe Dirt: Oh come on man. You got no lady fingers, fuzz buttles, snicker bombs, church burners, finger blasters, gut busters, zippity do das, or crap flappers?
Kicking Wing: No, I don't.
Joe Dirt: Yer gonna stand there, owning a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistling bungholes, no spleen spliters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?
Kicking Wing: No... because snakes and sparklers are the only ones I like.
Joe Dirt: Well that might be your problem, it's not what you like, it's the consumer.

I agree with everyone who said to start with Final Fantasy IX. Not only is it a great game, but it's something that a beginner can just pick up and play.

While I agree that FFVI rocked the house, there's a bit of a problem with suggesting it as the "first game," per se.

I mean, considering that everything in the World of Ruin (after the intro part) is more or less non-linear, how's someone who hasn't played any Final Fantasy games before to know that you actually can go find everyone, anyway? While I agree it's awesome... for that reason, I wouldn't think so. The wording's not quite right, but I think that gets the point across.

Damn, they all run together in my mind. Which one was FFVI? Is that the one that was FFIII in the US?

If I was starting, I'd play I, II and III. That'll give you a good foundation. If those are too clunky and dated for you, pick up VII. That was the game that many people, including myself, bought the Playstation for. I couldn't get into VIII and IX. FFX is also excellent.

But it's ALL ABOUT XI now!! Online action!! (actually, it doesn't really have many qualities of a Final Fantasy franchise game, but it's fun, nonetheless. Maybe it's all the tools that are screwing with my FF escapism.)

Yep, FF6 was FF3 in the US. It's got Terra, Locke, Sabin, etc... fighting against EVIL KEFKA!! Plus Espers, Magitek Armor, the Colliseum, the tunneling Castle of Figaro, the Opera House, and all kinds of other timeless stuff.

I know they rereleased this game on PS1 with some CGI stuff added in, but wouldn't it be totally awesome if the entire game was rehauled with modern SquareEnix graphics and voice actors. Now THAT would be a way to introduce FF newbies to the greatest RPG series ever.

They released FFVI on the PS, but with all the other remakes, the loading times SUCK! It takes 7 seconds to get to the damned menu! And believe me, it adds up!

Plus, I hate how they changed the controller scheme. Old square games used to have A on the SNES, O on the PS as the execute button. It has been since changed to X (which most games are), but when I switch back and forth between games, I always screw up somewhere. I know I can change the schemes, but I like continuity!!!

Considering that none of the stories and episodes have anything to do with the other, it really doesn't matter where you start. You might as just go grab X if you have a PS2 and 9 if you have PS and start there because those are the zeniths of the entire series on their respective systems with all the good functions thrown in and all the crappy ones taken out.

And as great a FF VI was, it definetly shows it's age if you go back and play it now (it's what, 10 years old?) and is really only for big fans of the series and those looking for a nostalgia trip.

I don't know...I found FF9 to be really difficult. Not as hard as FF8, but quite hard. I didn't really care too much for it at all.

I would have to suggest going with Final Fantasy VII...and try to keep a straight face and a dry eye at the end of the first CD.

SD2: April, Year 3; what's the point to the Career mode, anyhow?
FF7: Disc 1; 4h into game; Cloud...bodyguard, hero, crossdresser?!?
FF8: Disc 4; 42h into game; The gang against Adel (and Rinoa?!??!).
FF9: Disc 1; 6h into game; Hunting down Dagger after she drugged me!

Ahhhhh Final Fantasy which one should a new person to the series begin on?

Well the most glaring one I'd steer clear of is 8. It is the weakest one, at least in terms of fighting system. The story isn't bad, but the GF system... is I dunno it gets kinda annoying, at least for me. Everything else takes a backseat to the GFs.

But... I'd say FF7 is a good one one to start on, though X was pretty easy to, it's one of the shortest, and it's easy to get into, and overall not that difficult. If you can cope with the two main characters having the worst voices.

But one must ready oneself for taking the ultimate FF plunge. FF Tactics baby. Known to many a person by it's street term: crack. Harder to get into, but something that wont release you, until it has sucked out all your vital juices.

That may be the funniest FF related thing I have ever heard.

Tactics is simply AWESOME, but its not indicative of the rest of the FF series. However, if someone is more into strategy games then its definately a good way to wean them into the FF world.

Well now I've been quoted and had a post deleted... now all I need is widespread acceptance (not likely), or earn CRZ's or another honcho's wrath (likelier).

Buuuut thought I should say that if FF6 (or three) is where you want to start do not underestimate GoGo!
Umaro, however, is a piece of crap, and should be forgotten about, quickly and completely. But getting sucked down by a sandworm to acquire a questionable character is a great way to spend a... ah crap I need a life.

Umaro's a tank. Gogo is overrated though. Sure he can use any ability, but he's still a weak character. Plus, 75% of abilities are crap, why not go for the real deal? My FF6 dream team is: Terra, Sabin, Cyan, and Mog. If you don't like to use Mog, win him a Snow Muffler (Umaro's incredible armour) at the Colliseum and give him a a Genji glove with 2 Pearl Lances. VICIOUS!

Holy crap I need to get out my SNES.

Umaro isn't player controlled, so he SUCKS. Hard, long, and with a lot of teeth! Now statwise, and what he can do takin' damage, and such he's not bad, but him doin' whatever-the-hell he want's to makes him worse.

I am a compulsive leveller, I mean when I started the World of Ruin the average level was... something like 48. Now... my GoGo kicked serious ass. But then hey most of the stuff I was goin' after was pretty easy.

Still I am just sayin' Gogo is better than Umaro. But it's an opinion.
