From what I've read on a few sites, the hype for Bret Hart's return starts on tonight's Raw. Will be interesting to see how much background they give on why it's such a big deal or if they just assume most people will know. I'm curious to see if tonight's hype is indicative of the direction they'll be going, or if it's mostly just focused on the "holy crap" aspect of it all.
In the 1st Raw of the New Year we can at least expect one thing to happen Bret Hart & Shawn Michaels will come face to face. I for one am marking out for this!
I'll say this....for the first time in I can't remember I am actively looking forward to watching RAW. That's the intended effect right? So it's working at least for me.

I would have said the intended effect was to keep you away from Hogan on TNA, but after watching SNL and seeing a Bret Hart-themed RAW ad THERE, I'm thinking they ARE trying to pick up some lapsed WWE fans since I can't remember the last time the NBC-Universal conglomerate went to such steps to get out the word about an upcoming RAW. So... let's call it a two-pronged intent, at least.

They've done A LOT of cable buys... but maybe not in every market? I've seen a lot of them here in Minneapolis, mostly during RAW, ironically enough. Spike has had a lot of promos as well, most recently during the UFC 108 prelims.

I don't really think it's ironic that it's been during RAW. Unless you believe "ironic" means "on purpose."
From a ratings perspective, I think it's better that WWE run a 2 hour RAW, as opposed to 3. In my view, total audience comparison is going to be less useful than seeing how much of their audience TNA retains or loses at 9PM.
I actually watched the replay of Raw on Universal HD while wiping away still-fresh man-tears over Wes Welker's injury. I will admit I got excited about Bret Hart via the commercial they aired for tonight's Raw and the McMahon/Michaels promo. However, as one of the lapsed-fans who will be tuning in tonight, I have a question that I hope the WWE answers tonight:
Who the fuck is Sheamus and why the fuck is he the WWE champ?
Holy fuck shit motherfucker shit. Read comics. Fuck shit shit fuck shit I sold out when I did my job. Fuck fuck fuck shit fuck. Sorry had to do it....

Maybe if you still watched you would know the answer.
OMG, I'm ROTFLMAO!! JJD got PWNED!!
I'm not entirely sure what the point of this was, but what I'm saying is, it's just a bit silly to walk away from a product for five years and then come back with an attitude because you don't know who the guys are. If you'd left in 1999 and came back in 2004, you'd have had no idea who Brock Lesnar was. Or Kurt Angle for that matter. Heck, you'd probably have missed Lesnar's entire stint with the company. If you'd left in 2003 and came back in 2008, you'd have no idea who Kofi Kingston or CM Punk are. And so on.

Who is coming back "with an attitude because you don't know who the guys are", exactly? Here's what I watched, more-or-less in order:
- McMahon/HBK promo about Undertaker and Bret Hart. No explanation needed there.
- The Miz/Kofi Kingston matches. You're right, I have no idea who Kofi Kingston is. I've also seen like one promo and one match by the Miz in my life (though I enjoyed his stint on The Real World). However, this was easy-to-follow and entertaining, including the Randy Orton beat down.
- DX doing DX-things, and the match with Chavo and The Big Show with Jericho antics at ringside. Didn't need an explanation for that - even the Hornswoggle interference was understandable even if I have no idea what that backstory is.
- And finally, Cena/Sheamus for the title.
And while I get the "Cena's quest to regain the title"-angle, I found myself wondering "Why Sheamus?" I mean, while I appreciate seeing what the Undertaker's tattoo-less and paler little brother would look like, I couldn't come up with an real reason he would be the WWE champ based on charisma and/or talent. So it was a legit question.

And I don't think watching one single match of his is enough for you to determine whether or not he deserves it. Obviously Sheamus isn't too popular among the posters on this board, and I assume that influenced your opinion of him from the one match of his you've seen. I personally like the decision to put the belt on him - or at least don't think it's as bad as several others do - but I'm not trying to get you to agree with me. I just think to ask, "Who the fuck is Sheamus and why the fuck is he the WWE champ?" when you've seen exactly one show since 2005 or 2006 is a bit shortsighted.
I can only think of a few guys who really made a great impression on me the first time I saw them. I can think of individual matches or promos guys I really like have been a part of that, had I judged them solely on it, would have soured them in my eyes. Give the guy more than one match with a cheap DQ ending before you dismiss him (it's clearly too late for you to do this, in this case though).
And if "Who the fuck is Sheamus and why the fuck is he the WWE champ?" isn't an example of having attitude - by which I mean, in this case, asking a question with the answer you think is acceptable already in your head - then I don't know what is.

I love you, man.
Secondly,

Fixed that for you.
Thirdly, what the fuck, Bucs? Thanks for not only NOT answering my question, but also forcing the pilot to turn on the "No Smarking"-sign. Seriously.
Again, I ask: who the fuck is Sheamus and why the fuck is he the WWE champ?
Is he a *decent* wrestler? Does he have more game than he showed in a two minute DQ-special last week? Is he an interesting character on any level? That's what I want to know - you know, so I can enjoy tonight's show better. The guy could be O'Goldberg for all I know...only I wouldn't know based on only last week's episode (and half the episode at that).

He was on ECW up until a couple months ago, then he showed up on Raw and squashed Jamie Noble a couple times, beat up Finlay, won a battle royal for a title shot, then won the title in a semi-flukey fashion.
Evidently Triple H is fond of Sheamus's work ethic because he shows up early to shows and also goes to events that he isn't even a part of to watch things.
My problem with Sheamus is that his character is the kind of guy that should be getting over on his ring-work, but most of the actual wrestling on Raw happens during commercial breaks.

Eleventy billion stars for you.

To answer your questions in order:
1) No. 2) No. 3) No. Unless you find incredibly pale (and sometimes oddly shiny) skin interesting. Then yes, very much so.
He's basically a very tall, very large, very muscular monster heel-type wrestler. Not all that different from several kick-punch-stomp midcarders of the past who fit that description (e.g., the Warlord, Stevie Ray, Big Poppa Pump-era Scott Steiner), although it's debatable exactly how much charisma he has. I, for one, don't exactly see a whole bunch of it in him, but clearly somebody does or at least doesn't care.

I don't think he's as bad as the Warlord and Stevie Ray, two of the worst wrestlers of the last 20 years. He had a good match with Goldust. I think he's just ... a dude. A dude who might end up being good, but I can't be objective because I can't get over him bypassing so many people without even getting over.
