Crowd was decent sized and hot all night for the most part. They papered part of the top levels and some of the camera side, but for the most part the empty seats were few and far between. 7,000?
SMACKDOWN
-Cena comes out and cuts a promo on Big Show and of course raps. He is so damn over it isn’t even funny. Whoever said this gimmick didn’t have shelf life must be high because on my watch, he started doing it in late December of 2002.
-Cena d. Rhyno with the Spiccoli Driver. Hot opener for SD, but not long at all.
-Backstage we see a group of SD talents talking about how Heyman wants the entire roster in the ring later that night.
-Commercial Break at this point, because they paused and then we went right back to another pre-tape.
-Backstage we see Heyman in a room full of SD superstars. Cuts a great emotional promo on last weeks deal with Eddie and this weeks deal with Austin. Really sold the angle for the fans, in my view. Basically said this is “your Smackdown”. Don’t let Austin hurt “your Smackdown”. Sounds clichéd, but it comes off pretty good.
-We then cut to a shot in the parking garage and a shot of Austin’s Pickup Truck.
-Cut back to the ring, and Chavo Jr. and Chavo Sr. make their way to the broadcast booth for commentary on the next match.
-Rey Mystero vs. Jamie Noble ended in a no contest after the Cruiser weights ran in to give us a sweet cluster crap finish…Ah, but don’t worry fellow marks, there is a payoff. A new match is made on the spot and it’s an 8-man Cruiser weight tag match.
-Rey, Kidman, Ultimo Dragon, and Funaki d. Jamie Noble, Tajiri and the Japanese Mafia. Excellent match and the match of the night. Crowd was hot for all of it. Rey Jr. scored the pin, and afterwards the remaining cruisers in the CW open ran in and brawled. If I remember correctly, Rey Jr. is the last one in the ring after it clears out. Great match, they all worked hard.
-Backstage we see Heyman and with Stamboli and Palumbo, as Heyman’s “walkie talkie” informs him that Austin “is here”.
-Eddie comes out to a great pop and cuts a promo on Angle. Challenges him to come out. Nope. Hit WGTT music…
-Eddie d. Shelton Benjamin in a Non-Title match. Solid match. You know Eddie is over when Shelton slaps on a wear-down hold or rest-hold and the fans are still popping and cheering for Eddie to counter the spot. Unique finish where after a ref bump Charlie Hass brings Eddie’s belt in the ring and tries to take out Eddie, belt drops, Eddie takes out Haas, Both Chavo’s get on the apron and Eddie takes them down, then he nails Shelton with the belt. Ref gets up, Eddie tosses the belt out of the ring, lays down next to Shelton (playing possum)..Ref starts a ten-count, Eddie gets up, hits a Frog Splash and goes over. That’s how I remember it, I could have screwed up a detail or two.
-After the match, Kurt Angle arrives on the ramp and says nothing. Neither man say anything, they just look at each other like the ropes are electrocuted and if one guy crosses them it will be death. I didn’t understand this logic. Eddie Guerrero gets destroyed last week by Angle, so the logical thing would be to have Eddie (as soon as he sees Angle) try and get some heat back by brawling. I guess just like in “Ghostbusters” where you “can’t cross the streams”…I guess in the ring you “can’t cross the ropes” when you are in a heated program. Not a *big* deal, but it really doesn’t make sense if you think twice about it.
-Sable/Torrie Playboy appearance segment ran.
-Backstage, Heyman is with Orlando Jordan. Jordan tells Heyman he respects Austin. Heyman gets informed through his walkie that security “has lost Austin”.
-Big Show d. two unknown workers. Eh…"Jobbers” to the politically incorrect. Afterwards, Cena runs in and does a number on The Big Show, Big Show powders but leaves the belt in the ring, Cena picks up the U.S. title and flaunts it.
-Backstage we see Heyman and the APA. Heyman tells them to “do what’s good for Smackdown”. (Refering to stopping Austin)
-Scotty 2 Hotty and Rikishi d. Bashams in a Non-Title match. Linda Miles is still in the Bashams Entrance Video. Somebody needs to tell Kevin Dunn she’s in Ohio. No Stink Face spot, but they teased it during the finish. Crowd was really hot.
-Cut to Parking Garage. Nothing.
-Heyman to the ring for our final segment. Entire Smackdown Roster lines up on both sides of the ramp in two lines. Heyman cuts another promo and brings out Lesnar on the ATV. They cut another promo on Austin.
Austin’s music finally hits and out he walks to a thunderous pop. (Drove the pickup truck to the side of the stage, then got out first) Austin walks slowly past each member of the roster, each member going against Paul’s wishes and letting Austin gets to the ring. Slowly Austin is making his way to the end of the line as Heyman is screaming for someone to stop him. Austin makes it to the last SD superstar, which is Big Show. Ausitn and Big Show have a face to face. Big Show then turns face for one night and let’s Austin go past him.
At this point the entire SD roster powders to the back.
Austin hops on the ATV and rides it back up the ramp. Lesnar and Heyman still in the ring, ticked off. Austin gets off the ATV and heads back towards the ring. He meets Lesnar face to face on the floor, right in front of the ring. Austin then proceeds to beat Lesnar down to a pulp, and tosses him into the ring post. Lesnar juices. Brawl ends up in the ring, Austin then stuns Heyman.
After the stunner, Brock gets the upper hand and dishes it back to Austin to some huge crowd heat. Lesnar picks up Austin for an F-5, no, Austin wriggles free, Austin goes for the stunner on Lesnar, no, Lesnar wriggles free and powders out. Blood is trickling down Lesnar’s forehead. Lesnar and Paul head to the back. Austin celebrates, rides the ATV around, and hauls it on the of his pickup truck. Austin celebrates some more, drinks beer, and the fans go home happy.
Solid Smackdown. Didn’t feel like the “Go-Home TV” for Wrestlemania though. Maybe because Goldberg wasn’t involved. All in all, a fun night. The heat was there in a big way.
Biggest Pops
-Austin -Cena -Eddie -Free T-Shirt Guy
Biggest Heel Heat
-Heyman -Free T-shirt guy -Lesnar

See, I can be positive!
Edit - here's dark match & Velocity spoilers from the Observer:
DARK MATCHES
Kenzo Suzuki d. Billy Gunn after a pinning combo with his feet on the ropes. Decent opener, crowd was into it. How does Billy Gunn go from getting promo vignettes promoting his return, to jobbing to a guy that most never heard of…in a dark match?
Bradshaw d. Horshu. Basic stuff. Lot's of "Horses&%t" chants at Horshu. I smell money...
Shannon Moore d. Paul London. Crowd didn't get with it at first. There were a few boring chants that didn't last long. Solid match with Moore going over with a neck breaker type spot off the ropes. Not much high-risk, but I guess they don't want that anymore.
VELOCITY
-Chuck Palumbo d. Orlando Jordan with a Super-Kick to the back of the head, followed by a pin. Basic stuff you would expect.
-Bob Holly d. A-Train with a dropkick. Apparently it's 1982 again and a dropkick is a high-spot.
-At this point, the T-Shirt guy shot free-WWE shirts out of his cannon. By far the biggest pops of the night thus far. He then got the biggest heel heat. Awful.
I imagine Moore/London will make it on Velocity. And holy crap, Orlando lost to a buy-out guy! Mark your calendars!

| #3 Posted on 10.3.04 0756.18 | Instant Rating: 5.21 | And I can agree with you. The eight-man sounds spotriffic, and should be the perfect way to whet the appetite in the run-up to this Sunday's match. Plus, Rey Rey standing tall for the past two weeks would seem to sugges that he's not an automatic shoo-in come Mania, which is fine with me. But I'm in awe at the dumb booking of the final angle. Unless they're planning to appease Brock's ego by having him murderlise Austin in a "special attraction" match in the near future, booking the entire SD roster to be scared of him-as well as having him bitchslap Brock into oblivion-is easily the worst example of the stupid Austin-centric booking to date.
Sidenote: Anyone else kinda stoked at the Team Angle tease? It at least shows they're still aware of the connection between them, and it might even be a pointer to their reunion at some point over the next month or so.

Austin may not be an in-ring performer anymore, but since Goldberg isn't around, someone needs to beat on Lesnar to add SOME drama.
I don't think this takes away from Lesnar at all, since we know he'll win on Sunday. Austin is still extremely popular, and fans do like to see him win. If it can't be Goldberg, it should be Austin.

| #5 Posted on 10.3.04 0818.38 | Instant Rating: 6.85 | Where is Kurt explaining how far back his trechery goes? Why hasn't he explained that this goes back to December when he got involved in the Guerrero Family Feud to keep him out of the Rumble? Or that he was the "mystery attacker" all those weeks on Smackdown? I was hoping for this explaination before WM so we would get a nice big video package before their match that details to what lengths Kurt has gone to in the attempt to keep Eddie away from the title. There better at least be an interview with Kurt at WM where he explains it. That is one of the best examples of long term story telling that WWE has shown in years and it's a pity they haven't exploited it.

I didn't read it so much of them being afraid of Austin, as much of them being fed-up with Heyman. "Oh, you want to kick his head in? Why should I stop you?"
As for Angle and the sneak attacks, it's always a possibility that he wasn't behind them and it really was someone else. Perhaps they're playing up to that after WM (say, get Angle beaten so badly by Eddie that he has to go "to the hospital," and then another attack occurs).

It's a lot easier for me to be positive about SD (except maybe when Taker or Bradshaw are involved) than Raw.
Last week's Velocity had a fantastic Knoble/London match that made me giggle like a schoolgirl.
And I like the idea of "SD brand loyalty" that Heyman tried to instill in the lockerroom. They should do that stuff more often. Do it w/ Raw, too, and not just have HHH lob out some "paper champ" comments every few months.

Agreed, on top of which, they needed to establish Austin as being physically able to handle Lesnar should the need arise. The fans for better or for worse still buy into Austin as a bad ass rather than as a broken down former wrestler so it won't hurt Lesnar's heat.
Not so sure about the whole roster leaving, but certainly the faces would be seen to do so to get back at Heyman, and by the time they get down to the last couple of heels those guys probably figured it wasn't worth the hassle. We'll see how it plays out. | SC

*BANG*
Seriously though...he got a huge pop last Velocity he wrestled with Orlando Jordan and actually got some serious cheers before getting squished by Lesner last week..and didn't look to bad in the process either. He's got a backing mate...he just needs a push in a decent direction...like chase Cena's skirt for the US title after he wins...could see some good bitter old guy versus good cocky young guy matches...
As for Billy Gunn...*shudder*...it's over mate...time to give up the boots!!
Cheers,
Erin...still hoping to see her guy on Sunday...praying...I STILL CARE!!! ;)
