This is the go-home show before Extreme Rules! This thread is very much late, so we'll keep the results brief.

-Jack Swagger comes out for his match, but cuts a promo first. He talks about beating two first-ballot HOF'ers (Edge & Jericho) and taking Undertaker to the limit, which is a fancy way of saying he LOST. He talks about wanting to join the SmackDown! roster. Wait, he ISN'T? Didn't Batista make an automatic switch when he won the WWE title? Why wouldn't the same rule apply to Swagger? Anyway, this segues into the first match of the night.

-John Morrison d. Jack Swagger: Non-Title Match
Morrison wins clean as a sheet with Starship Pain. Even Steven booking's already a major annoyance with the E, but is it really necessary with the CHAMPION? Swagger now goes into the PPV with two straight clean losses, including one to Morrison, who's done nothing of consequence since the Elimination Chamber PPV...and isn't even booked for the PPV, 'natch.

-Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre d. R-Truth & Matt Hardy
R-Truth's death has been greatly exaggerated, as he's fully recovered from being exploded. The heels basically smash Matt's head in throughout the match until the ref stops the match. I guess this is a good way to get the anti-head injury philosophy over. Other than that, a throwaway match. Post-match, McIntyre bashes Matt's head in some more.

-Chris Jericho and Wade Barrett come out for a promo from inside a steel cage. Jericho promises pain and suffering for Edge and that he'll be gone after Sunday. Edge walks into the cage for rebuttal, which quickly turns into Edge trying to take out both guys before the numbers take over. Edge is able to chase Jericho off and spear Barrett.

-JTG d. Mike Knox
Shad Gaspard was out for commentary with a strap in-hand. Godspeed, Mike Knox. The grizzly man goes on out a two-minute special. Post-match, Shad comes in with the strap and...well, you know.

-Simply Flawless d. Beth Phoenix & Mickie James
Poor Mickie was really enthusiastic, but eats the pinfall and is treated like a total afterthought. Post-match, the heels and Vickie gang up on Beth and give her the lipstick treatment. The heels bringing out an ironing board gives me flashbacks to the Jeff Jarrett/Chyna feud.

-The Straight Edge Society comes out for their match. CM Punk cuts a promo talking about how there will be no more of his hair cut. A barber's chair is at ringside.

-The Straight Edge Society d. Rey Mysterio & Kane
A great reversal sequence leads to a Punk pinfall, which is a finish I think they should have saved for Sunday. Post-match, Punk tries to deliver more punishment, but Mysterio fights back and puts Punk in the chair, but Serena intervenes and allows Punk to escape before hair-cuttery can ensue.

A decent go-home show, but the decision to keep jobbing Swagger baffles me.

R-Truth makes a miraculous recovery from being exploded!...

Mixed feelings. Glad to see they remembered John Morison is supposed to be the future of the company. Sorry it was at Swagger's expense. Man, does that guy need a win or what? Wonder who his next opponent is? Oh, crap. ; )

He beat Morrison, Edge, and Jericho on the 2 Smackdowns before this.

I will keep repeating that point til Chicken Littles stop posting about Swagger's two-loss streak.

Absolutely loved the "curbstomp" McIntyre did on Matt Hardy, and the awesome sell job afterwards...

I'm actually interested in the Cryme Tyme breakup...surprised it's getting a match at Extreme Rules, and hope they keep it going for a while.

Feel free to cut and paste that response as often as you like. I watch the show, I know what happens each week. He pinned Jericho (who hasn't?), but he hasn't really beaten Edge. I know he beat Morrison a few weeks ago, but how does that really matter now that he got his win back? If you are going to go Even Steven on the booking, why not give Morrison his win a few weeks ago to set something up for later on, instead of Swagger eating another pin going into the biggest match of his life? It's not as bad as the Sheamus booking during his run, and the sky is not falling, but it's weak booking and a lack of faith in Swagger in my unqualified opinion. I like the guy, and wish they would just take a chance and really push someone new.

I DON'T like Swagger, and I don't like the way they're booking his run so far. It just doesn't make sense, especially considering the really weak way they had him win the title in the first place. He's not at the point like Jericho or Punk where he can lose matches and it doesn't affect his position. He's still got to make his name in the business, and right now he's got roughly the same winning streak as the Big Show did during his first 3 years with the company.

The difference is, Big Show was able to keep his job because he's a fookin huge guy. He can come in and play the "monster" in a feud even though everyone knows he's going to lose. Until teaming with Jericho, he's had no momentum and no reason to do anything in the company. He was a joke, and were it not for the fact that he's the biggest guy in the company, he would have been future endeavered years ago simply because creative screwed him up years ago.

Swagger could disappear after losing the title on Sunday and no one would remember him, his reign or who Orton beat for the title in a few months time. He hasn't made his mark yet on that title because they won't let him. Right now he's being booked as a mid-carder that can't even beat other mid-carders, and only won the title on a fluke.

The only part of it I like is that Lawler has been going on non-stop about how it's a sure thing that Orton will win at the PPV, that they HAVE to have Swagger win... right? RIGHT?!?

He will. I'm pretty sure. I think he lost to Morrison as part of the facile reverse psychology they try to do, "he's losing so he's definitely going to lose, oh what he didn't." Still dumb for your world champion to have a below .500 record.

Since the WWE doesn't give a wins/loss record outside of NXT, it really doesn't matter. Besides, I am almost entirely sure he'll beat Orton, so all the premature 'worst title reign ever!!' is silly. Especially since the guys formerly called the worst ever (Punk, Rey, and Sheamus) are firmly established in the upper card on this PPV.

Also, he's above .500 since becoming world champ I believe.

I'll bet a cheap DQ or countout is more likely than Orton's shoulders being down (particularly if Orton goes to Smackdown).

I'm pretty sure it's:
Lost Orton
Beat Morrison
Beat Jericho/Edge
Lost Undertaker
Lost Morrison

The WWE may not keep official win/loss records, but fan perception is everything in wrestling. Had McMahon given the Brooklin Brawler the World Title 10 years ago it's not like you could say "yea wins don't count so this is a good push". Now, Swagger hasn't hit as low as the Brawler obviously, but he's at a point in his career where he could go either way. A few months ago it was accepted that if you DID see him on TV, he was probably going to lose. If he's not believable, no push or title run will work.

Punk and Rey were already accepted by the fans as top level, or potential top level talent. Sheamus is still on his push, so we'll have to wait to see how his goes.

Best thing for Swagger is to win at the PPV. I don't care if it's clean or not since he's a heel, but he needs *something* he can come on TV this week and brag about. Orton is riding high now and is at the point where he can take a loss and it won't hurt him, so now's where they decide whether to try to make Swagger a top level guy, or a temp top level guy.
