Live from San Diego ... (taped 10/28/08)

Halloween-ish episode. But really not all that much.

One dark match & then live ECW (The W) first.

JR & Tazz are in Halloween costume. JR does not look particularly sharp in a white sailor's uniform. He even passed on the cowboy hat, wearing the correct white navy cap. Tazz, however, was all set for the newest remake of Predator in his jungle camo. I suspect JR was less than pleased, but the San Diego crowd liked it.

Open with Vickie, Chavo & Big Show. Vickie tells us that Undertaker only defeated Big Show because he used an illegal chokehold. So we're having a casket match tonight. She goes on to describe the (Halloween-ish) horrors of being trapped in a casket, as first Chavo, then even Big Show start to look squeamish. Oh, y'all assumed it was Big Show in the casket match? Noooo, it's Chavito.

Just call me Eric Young. By this time you'd think I'd be good at knowing when the pyro is gonna hit. Nope -- sneaks up on me nearly every time. (Thought for Halloween costume: Super Emma! Maybe not.)

-- Morrison / Miz vs. Primo / Carlito:
For us live, this was right on the heels of the Morrison / Miz DX segment. That was all rather odd, but they did still have extra heel heat going in. I like Primo's work better than Carlito's, Carly is the one with all the extra personality, but I think Primo is the more solid worker. I think Primo is good for Carlito.

This was rocking along quite nicely, up until the first of several odd screw-ups during the show. We had a two count, clearly not a three, & the bell rang. Everybody from the ref to JR to backstage was confused. The ref was sticking by "no, just two". But even the crew started to bring up the house lights, as they do at the end of a match. All parties concerned decided that we weren't actually done, & continued to the Miz/Morrison win. I can't wait to see whether they somehow edit that, or just leave it in as an oops.

-- Jimmy Wang Yang comes out in a different-than-usual cowboy outfit. Decent pop from the crowd, he gets a mic, & announces "I'm John Wayne Yang". Takes off the duster & the hat & the guns from the holsters. Suddenly we stop. The elves hand him back all his assorted wardrobe, & he scampers back offstage. WTF? Reset, & we go for take 2. (He forgot the guns for the second take, so he just has empty holsters.) This time the ring announcer introduces "John Wayne Yang", & poor Jimmy has to work 5 times harder to get a reaction from the crowd who are still confused.

Anyway, Take 2 took, & we move on to intro his opponent.

-- Jimmy John Wang Wayne Yang vs. The Brian Kendrick with his trusty Ezekiel:
Spanky & Zeke were not in any kind of costumes beyond their normal ring attire. Nice little match, ending early with a DQ due to Ezekiel getting caught pulling Kendrick out from under a pinfall attempt. Ezekiel slams around JJWWY briefly, then Kendrick hits the erstwhile Sliced Bread #2.

Nice little match with some fun air, but would have liked more, & not nearly enough love from the crowd.

Backstage, Kung Fu Naki seems to be asking Khali what's his secret of seduction. Via Singh: "Size matters." I'm skeptical, on many counts.

Khali & Singh come out to the ring to do the Great Khali's Kiss Cam. First, puhleeezze tell me this is commercial filler & not actual TV. And, for the third do-over of the night, Singh fumbles a line about a happy cowgirl & helps himself to a second take. Isn't that "Jan the make-up artist" in the witch costume? Khali is coerced to french kiss an enthusiastic, ugly chick. I think it would have been much more amusing if they'd picked the guy in Halloween Diva Drag from the audience.

-- Kane, Mark Henry w/ Tony Atlas, & MVP vs. both Hardyz, & Rey Mysterio:
Mark Henry again? Oh joy. We wait for MVP's inflate-a-tunnel to ,,, inflate. Then watch a tech guy lose to the velcro that holds the smoke in til MVP pops through. Having gotten that out of the way, the Hardyz just come on out to a huge pop, followed by Rey with an even huger pop. I'll predict that Kane hauling Rey out of the ring onto the floor in front of the announcers is your first commercial break. Much mauling of Rey by the big bad heels. Kane gets to do the overhead press then drop move. I'm pretty sure that it's only Kane running the "heel team" that kept this match engaging. More mauling of Rey til he *finally* gets to tag out. Eventually, Rey takes out Kane from the top rope, & the Hardyz gang up on Henry. Jeff does not miss the splash from the top rope (Even though it was bouncing badly, he managed.) & gets the pin on MVP. Crowd goes wild & all is right with the world.

Kozlov is out to talk. "You people are soft & lazy", & he wants HHH for a title shot. HHH out to retort. They're a bit behind the times in Russia, just now getting the original Rocky movie. In Rocky 4 there's this big, mean, nasty russian. I can't for the life of me envision why HHH would *want* to compare himself to Rocky, but that's the drift. It's up to Vickie to sort out title shots, but HHH would be happy to kick Vladi's ass right now. Nope, Kozlov's a chickenshit heel & only wants a title match, so he backs away to derision.

-- 6 diva tag team match: Maria, Brie Bella & Michelle McCool vs. Victoria, Natalia & Maryse:
Divas in the same costumes as Sunday. Victoria losing badly to the banana costume. :-) She & Michelle had a nice little set, & ultimately bunny Maria got the pin on banana Victoria. No additional comment necessary.

I really want to like Natty, but I haven't yet sorted out what isn't working for me.

And, it's about time for the Main Event:

Busy, busy elves tonight! Rollin' (rollin', rollin') out the special fog-inducing carpet for Undertaker.

Chavo out to less heat than I'd expect, & looking less than thrilled to be there. I think we're starting to feel sorry for the way Vickie treats him.

Set of 8 druids bring the casket out to ringside. (Is it always the same casket, or do they get a new one every time? I know there are places where you can buy a used casket. I digress.)

I'm quite sure the pyro guys have a checklist item to apply flame retardant to that poor camera guy. He gets toasted (in a bad way) every Undertaker entrance!

Awesome Undertaker entrance. Just before we're about to start, Big Show comes out to his music. Chavo looks relieved. Show gets to the foot of the ramp, staring at Taker, then ... starts to back up. Chavo tries to make a game effort, but it's mostly futile. The only chance he has is that Taker is somewhat distracted keeping Show at bay by the sheer awesomeness of his glare. Ultimately, Taker slams Chavo into the casket, with no actual interference from Show.

Actually this was a pretty good match, given the innate squashiness. They worked out some ways for Chavo to get a bit of offence, & it was entertaining.

Taker does the "I won" ritual, & graciously opens the casket to let Chavo out. Meanwhile, Show skulks around the ring to jump Taker from behind. Taker ends up rolling Show through the ropes into the casket. In a beautiful piece of timing, just as Taker slams the casket on Show, Chavo emerges from the fog layer at the top of the ramp, crawling away from the whole thing.

And presumably this is where TV ends. We get an announcement of "The second half of our double main event will be Rey Mysterio vs. Kane ... in a cage!" Cool!

I am wondering whether somebody decided that the elves need some practice setting up cages on the fly. This being 2 nights in a row that they've gotten to do so.

Nice, nice cage match! I said after CyberSunday how impressed I am that these 2 do such good matches together -- this was another one. Rey's ability to scamper squirrel-like up the cage is a nice asset for him. But he just always has to try to hit one more air move. :-) Naturally, Rey wins by going over the top, & Kane is appropriately disgusted. So much so, that he chases a ref back up the ramp, while Rey works the whole perimeter of the ring.

Another very good show. Not entirely as hot as last night's Raw, & too many talky segments, but I still had a great time. No clue what the deal was with all the retakes -- I've never seen so many or such obvious ones. Very strange.

I won't be watching this because I'll be taking the little one trick or treating, but one thing bothers me.

Can someone please explain the point of having a brand extension if you just throw a Raw feud(Rey/Kane) in on a tag match on SD? There's not enough of the feud on Raw? There's not SD guys backstage that could use some TV time?

Rey wrestles in San Diego when they are in town. It's as simple as that.

Would it kill them to come up with some storyline reason? And I don't mean just for this, but for any of the random appearances or roster switches or any of that nonsense.

Kung Fu-Naki d. Ryder (I think). Hawkins (I think) had done some horrible weird thing to his hair -- black streaks through parts of it -- kinda made him look like RiffRaff from RHPS. (Hopefully it was some weird Halloween attempt.) Real short match, heels cheated in vain. Fine for a warm-up match.

Having now just watched the TV version, that was extra cool! Not only did we get the extra bit of business between Undertaker & BS after TV ended, we got a slightly different take on BS' participation in the match. And we didn't get the Kozlov doing a deal with devil Vickie angle. NIce!!

(At all times, what happens on television is the real version! :-) )

Oh YEAH, that's what I was going to say! Jindrak looks okay, but Sean has that natural sinister vibe going for him.
