It's designed to load quicker and for people who don't want to deal with anything besides text.

It does have to do with dialing with a phone, since people who would use a slow modem use it versus people with a cable modem or DSL wouldn't? Alternative descriptions: 1) It's a Unix thing. If you don't know, you don't need to. :-) 2) It's the Unix (world) mechanism for scheduling stuff to happen either on a regular basis (eg. daily backups at 3:00 am when nobody's around)
