| #3 Posted on 24.4.03 0930.47 | The Dixie Chicks want their freedom of speech and don't want to be censored by the government or right wing talk-radio? I can accept that. But they are a bunch of hypocrites! Look at the way they cover up their naughty bits on that cover! That's censorship! Booooooooooooo!
As much as I love my state, I never did care much for Bruce Springsteen. I know he's a huge lefty, but I don't hold it against him. I was just never into his tunes. Except for "Born to Run".

Fear can sometimes be a useful emotion. For instance, let's say you're an astronaut on the moon and you fear that your partner has been turned into Dracula. The next time he goes out for the moon pieces, wham!, you just slam the door behind him and blast off. He might call you on the radio and say he's not Dracula, but you just say, "Think again, bat man." | David Adams

| #5 Posted on 24.4.03 0944.20 | You know, for a group that's saying that they're victims of censorship, I'm seeing a lot of Dixie Chicks lately. They're on the cover of EW and they get to cry their way back into the hearts of America on Friday night with Diane Sawyer while explaining why they said what they said.
And while I don't agree with most of Springsteen's political stances, I have my tickets for the Giants' Stadium run this summer. | waffleking

| #9 Posted on 24.4.03 1146.35 | Hey let's see the Dixie chicks try using their "FREE SPEECH" and "American values" in front of a big crowd in a concert at Texas NOT England. The Dixie Chicks are pussies just trying to play up to an anti-war crowd and get some cheap heat. I'm just saying, would they have used their "FREE SPEECH" if they were doing a concert in America? I doubt it. That's why they upset me, not their comments about the president.
Interesting bit about the Dixie Chicks. They had season tickets to the Houston Astros. Minute Maid Field decided to stop playing their music. This upset the Dixie Chicks and in yet another act of "free speech," "American Values," and defiance they purchased season tickets to the Texas Rangers. And who used to own the Texas Rangers? President George W. Bush.

And since the "used to own" is accurate, where's the problem?
As for the picture, um... which one of them were many wingnuts calling "fat" again?

| #15 Posted on 24.4.03 1756.31 | But hasn't the Dixie Chicks upcoming tour in the USA pretty much sold out? I guess people aren't as angry as they were a couple of months ago. Or is it a matter of separating your agreement/disagreement with their political views and your enjoyment of their music?
FWIW, it's surprising that people got so bent out of shape over what they said. I mean, it's the Dixie Chicks. Who gives a flying hoot what their opinion is? Play that banjo, Martie! | cactuspete

| #17 Posted on 24.4.03 1826.40 | They can say what they want where they want as long as they're responsible about it. Hell, that's the essence of free speech, isn't it? Know what else you can do in a free country? Disparage those you vehemently disagree with--especially public figures. You can also stop buying the products of said figures and encourage those around you to do the same. You can have public demonstrations where you destroy those products (if you own them) and even burn them in effigy if you feel the need.
Somewhere along the lines, the media got mixed up on the definitions of "boycott/protest" and "censorship/blacklistitng". When individuals get together and carry out peaceful protests against other individuals or groups, it's the former. When the government or other organizations in power do it, it's the latter.
Who is destroying Dixie Chicks albums and boycotting them? Individual, free Americans.
Of course, there have allegedly been a few nutjobs who have sent death-threats to the group, but they have to be gay, right? I mean look at 'em! Scrumdiddlyumptious!

Keep in mind that this isn't the first time comments from Natalie Maines have created an uproar. A thread from last August here on the Wienerboard (wienerboard.com) was dedicated to discussing the disparaging remarks Ms. Maines had made about Toby Keith's song "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue". So, while it may be surprising, it's certainly not unprecedented.
BTW, included with Ms. Maines coments from that time was a stated preference by her for Bruce Spingsteen's songs from "The Rising" over Mr. Keith's song. Just thought that was worth pointing out.
