Shonen Jump, the manga monthly, is now on newsstands; I picked one up... and am wanting next month's issue already. The mangas in there are: Yu-Gi-Oh! from the beginning, DBZ starting after Goku beats Frieza, YuYu Hakusho, OnePiece and SandLand. It's got some OK articles in there, as well.
I'm stoked with reading YGO! and OnePiece; SandLand, for some reason, is just ehh.

Yup -- I actually picked it up at a supermarket. The cool thing about Yu-Gi-Oh! is that it's going to have the full back story, real character names, and Yugi perving over Anzu somewhere in the first 15 pages or so.
Plus, Yami Yugi's a little darker when he shows up -- think of some of Yami Bakura's instances on the Americanized version, but Yami Yugi is still a good guy. Read, and you'll see.
Oh -- and Grandpa Mutoh is also a perv. Duh. :)

Why couldn't they put something worth reading in the American Shonen Jump, like old Fist of the North Star or Appleseed or Lodoss War even. Not all this kid friendly crap with no plot or reason besides mindless violence and toys to sell.
I merely suggested, that you had the driving ability of a brain dead labratory ape.

They can't put "Appleseed" in because it's running new installments in Dark Horse's "Super Manga Blast."
"Fist of the North Star" is running in Tokyopop's rival RAIJIN manga collection.
As to why they'd do more "Kid Friendly" stuff, my guess is they want to actually tap into a potentially long-term viable consumer base rather than the dwindling base of comic/superhero fans, which are, to be kind, and endangered species.
After all, the reason manga is an instituion in Japan while comics here are a dying art sis because they make manga for all ages, all genders, and all interests.

ACK! YuYu and YuGiOh are just this years Pocket Monsters or Task Force Zyuranger. By next year, these kids will be on to something else like the new Astro Boy or whatever.
Where's this generations LupinIII or Area 88?

Cerebus:
Might I mention that Shonen is the first exposure I've had to any real manga. Regarding the violence... Yugi's threatened with a knife, Yusuke, of course, is hit by a car, the Captain in OnePiece loses an arm, one of the Mountain Bandits gets capped in the head...
And, of course, DBZ is DBZ.
You know what, though? It makes me want to get out and discover more manga; I even foolishly e-mailed to get FotNS included. If not, I'll just go on Amazon or eBay and get the manga there. Hell, if it gets kids reading, that's a start, no?

Hey, YuYu Hakusho isn't all mindless violence! There's also a lot of character development and interaction throughout the series. It's the thinking man's DBZ. Besides, mindless action can be fun sometimes. Even though they are great, you can only watch or read so much Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, or Evangelion before you just need to take a little break with something simpler.
