Between The Jeffersons and 227, he had such an impact on sitcoms. He wasn't a terrific actor, but his comedic timing was top notch. The only other actor I think from that era who could have played George Jefferson would have been Redd Foxx, but he had such a similar role already.
RIP funny man!

He only made an appearance on 227. You're (probably) thinking of Marla Gibbs, who played Florence on The Jeffersons, and who was the lead on 227. His other big show was Amen.
I thought Sherman Hemsley was awesome. I grew up on The Jeffersons (well, re-runs at least), so I'm bummed that he's gone. I really dug it when he and Isabel Sanford would pop up on TV shows from time to time.
I loved him the handful of times he popped up on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as well. His comedic timing was impeccable, as was his voice. To me he's probably second to only Bobcat Goldthwait in terms of all-time unique comedic voices. He will certainly be missed.

I did mean Amen. Thanks for the correction.

I watched the original airings...
His interactions with Mr. Bentley were terrific.
So did I, and when it comes to The Jeffersons, I'm not afraid to admit it. Hell, I even remember his debut on All In The Family and was bummed when Weezy and Edith had their last chat in Edith's kitchen when they were "movin' on up".
I'm just picturiing George and Weezy struttin' into that big white skyscraper. Thanks for the memories, Mr. Helmsley. R.I.P.
