What the hell?! This doesn't seem like a storyline.

Shane McMahon resigns
Written: October 16, 2009

It is with great sadness that I announce my resignation from the WWE, effective January 1, 2010.

I have never even considered a future outside the walls of the WWE. However, sometimes life takes an unexpected turn and while it is the most difficult decision I have ever made, it is time for me to move on.

First and foremost, I would like to thank my father for the incredible education working with him has provided and for giving me the opportunity to play a role in building WWE into the global phenomenon that it is today. I am extremely proud to have been the 4th generation in this business, and I am grateful for everyday I was able to work along side not only my own, but the entire WWE family.

Thank you to all of the WWE Superstars both past and present for your passion, pride and dedication. You are truly the engine of the organization and it has been a pleasure to work with, learn from and get to know all of you. Thank you for the privilege of sharing the stage with you and for allowing me to become but a momentary member of your elite brotherhood. I have so much appreciation for the many sacrifices you endure, both physically and personally, to make this business the success that it is. The respect I have for each of you is immeasurable.

Finally, there are no words to express my gratitude to WWE fans the world over for supporting this company through good times and bad and for your unbridled passion that fuels the Superstars’ performances. I am profoundly grateful to have been able to entertain you both in front of the camera and from behind the scenes. You are the greatest fans in the world.

I will always love this business and will remain a fan forever.

Shane

My friend just came up with a good theory...he's leaving to work on Linda's campaign in some capacity.

Perhaps he read the writing on the wall for the internal war of succession. Or, he just burned out being in the same business since the day he was born.

Good for him ... I'm sure it was a difficult decision, but you've gotta respect him for taking a chance.

Of course, it's not like he's going to be struggling to feed his family either.

Take a chance? On what?

For all we know, he could be retiring. And hey, if I were a 40-odd multimillionaire with a young family, retiring early and taking long, extended vacations together might be more rewarding than overseeing large, muscular men who're pretending to fight on TV.

'Specially after you've been doing it since birth.

Dude, taking a chance not doing something that you've done since birth & breaking the news to your father who, for all intents & purposes, can probably be a scary motherfucker when he wants to be.

I agree that this may have more to do with Linda's campaign then anything else. I think Shane knew when HHH and Steph got married or even before he was out of the loop. Yet, I don't think he really cares either. He probably wants to get out of the family shadow and either strike out on his own or be a Dad for awhile. Either way good for him, but probably bad for us.

Expect DX to humiliate and beat up a midget version of Shane on the next RAW.

What did Shane do for the company anyway? Steph. was always getting the promotions. Guess he got tired of being shunned all the time by Steph. I'm sure ESPN would hire Shane if Shane really wanted to work there. What is Meltz saying about this?

I think it's writing on the wall stuff more than Mom's campaign, with this statement from Vince. He knows Hunter and Steph are the successors.

Shane used to be in charge of their online presence.

    BIOS:
    Shane B. McMahon
    Executive Vice President, Global Media

Shane B. McMahon represents the fourth generation of the McMahon family to be involved in the wrestling entertainment industry. He has had the unique opportunity to experience all levels of the business, starting when he was just five years old carrying the attire of WWE Superstars from the ring to the locker room area. Shane held many different responsibilities throughout his teenage years including stocking the company’s warehouse and then eventually becoming a member of the ring crew, a referee and a ring announcer.

Following Shane’s graduation from Boston University in 1993, he worked in WWE’s television production, sales, marketing, and international business development divisions, before he helped form the company’s digital media department in 1998. Shane and his team launched WWE.com in 1998, a site that has more than 20 million unique visitors worldwide per month. Since July 2003, Shane has served as Executive Vice President of WWE Global Media, overseeing international TV distribution, live event bookings, digital media, consumer products and publishing.

The beginnings of WWE as we know it today began when Shane’s parents Vince and Linda McMahon purchased the Capitol Wrestling Corporation from Vince’s father in 1982. Just as Vince brought WWE from a regional operation to a national enterprise recognized around the world, Shane is overseeing WWE’s global business initiatives with new and expanded operations in London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sao Paolo, Toronto and Sydney.

In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Shane has also contributed to WWE’s programming as a talent and creative contributor. “Shane-O-Mac,” Shane’s stage name, has thrilled WWE audiences around the world.

Vice President of Global Media. Works to get television deals in as many countries as possible, I would imagine. Previously was Vice President of New Media. He headed the group that created (at the time) WWF.com.

As an officer of WWE, Inc., he was required to report any purchase or selling of WWE stock. Therefore, we know he owned 43,407 shares as of July 21st. http://investor.shareholder.com/wwe/secfiling.cfm?filingID=1180421-09-2
At current market prices, those shares are worth about $580,000. That's just his WWE stock, of course.

Wouldn't you love to see that? A McMahon working in the industry but outside the Vince philosophy?

Why is Shane making this announcement "with great sadness?" Sure it's a big step in his life, but it's not like he was being shoved out the door. Was he? Maybe I'm just reading too much into that opening, but it doesn't sound like a very pleasant departure.

I know you like picking on CajunMan, but I don't see where he suggested Shane was going to start his own wrestling company. His comment basically translates into, "Boy, apparently Shane is coming out of this deal with a ton of money!"

If I said, "It's so hot outside you could fry an egg on the sidewalk," would you be so quick to point out that lots of people have hot sidewalks but none of them fry eggs on them?

I think you're reading too much into it. Sounds like he wanted to go somewhere else, but he's sad to leave the good times and friends behind.

I wonder if we'll get a rare Jericho appearance on regular TV (or even Summerslam) to return the job and put Neville over.
