| #1 Posted on 24.6.03 1100.54 | Well, here you go. First, undisputed facts: adding up the numbers from all the county clerk offices that responded to AP queries (55 of 58 - all except Placer, Tehama and Trinity), 389,337 signatures had been collected for the Davis recall as of the 16th. It takes 897,158 *valid* signatures to trigger the recall, so the supporters are shooting for 1.2 or 1.3 million just to be safe.
Thanks to Google News, it's easy to check out the headlines and see how this is being reported:
"Nearly half of signatures collected" (or some variation thereof): San Jose Mercury News KABC, Los Angeles Palm Springs Desert Sun Orange County Register Contra Costa Times San Francisco Chronicle Ventura County Star Long Beach Press-Telegram KTXL, Sacramento Riverside Press-Enterprise KNBC, Los Angeles
"Recall about a third of the way to ballot" (or some variation thereof): San Jose Business Journal Sacramento Bee
Davis recall effort now at 389337 signatures Los Angeles Daily News
My hunch is most of the "half" headlines are variations on a story submitted to the AP wire service. I'd never heard of the SJ Business Journal before today.
The Sacramento Bee headline is intriguing. Technically, they're right about using the "one third" figure given that the goal is to get enough signatures to ensure having enough valid ones, but certainly you can see a psychological difference between a headline saying "halfway there" and one saying "about a third of the way there."
Just for kicks, I checked the websites of the Modesto and Fresno Bees to see if they had the story - neither one did, and both of their searches appear to be broken.
This is meaningless by itself, but I'm sharing it with you anyway. ;-)
PS Supporters SAY they actually have closer to 800K by now, but they could be blowing smoke. The Secretary of State MAY release an official statewide total later today. Stay tuned...

| #7 Posted on 24.6.03 1634.46 | Last count I saw had them approaching 1 million signatures. Who knows how many of those have actually been handed in though.
The recall could turn messy, though. In all likelihood, of the recall reaches the ballot, Davis will be out. But knowing him, he will launch probably one of the most bitter mudslinging campaigning efforts we have ever seen out of him. A lot of us remember what he did to Riordan...
And, with no Democrats stepping forward yet, we are left with a few Republicans. Out of them, I think McClintock is the best man for the job, but he is sure to be outshadowed by Arnold, and Bill Simon throwing his hat in there can't be good...
I don't doubt that they are going to get enough signatures for the recall, especially with the tripling of the car tax without a vote, but the next few months are going to be ugly on the political side...

| #8 Posted on 24.6.03 1653.46 | I have tried to follow this, but it slides under my radar sometimes. What if anything has the CA GOP had to say about all of this? I know the stuff I've read has made it seem like the Bush people do not want this to happen as they would kill to run in 2004 with Davis in charge and weak as hell. Have they taken an official position on things, and more importantly have they been working one side or the other in this?

| #9 Posted on 25.6.03 0211.50 | Actually I think the Republicans could benefit a great deal if a Republican comes into office and manages to fix the budget without making things worse. Personally, it is going to be a hell of a job, and with the current pro-tax Democrats firmly entrenched in the state Congress, it is not going to be easy at all.
The leading Republican in office speaking out is Tom McClintock. He has an article he wrote for the OC Register posted on his site, that pretty well spells out the general point of his plan. Long story short - the state has more than enough money, we are just wildly overspending. He has made a lot of apperances on a radio show I listen to, and he seems to have a pretty firm grasp on the situation. As far as I know, all of the CA Republicans are standing behind him, and much to my surprise, there have been to defections.

It's probably all a matter of interpreation. They may have nearly 800,000 and haven't submitted them to the SOS yet. The papers could just be reporting the number actually submitted.
"I'm going to fill a dark awful basement with radioactive cockroaches. Yep. Big nasty ones like skateboards on legs, that go click-click-click when they walk. And maybe poisonous. I'm going to starve them for a week.
Then I'm going to catch all the coercive priss-spigots in the world, the ones that want to ban second-hand smoke and dwarf-tossing and beer. I'll smear the rascals with bacon fat, so the roaches won't know what they're eating, as otherwise they might not.
Then I'm going to toss all those greased busybodies into the basement. And whoop. And dance. Ha." - Fred Reed | Guru Zim

That's ok, I hate that paper anyway.
