I agree that they probably went public with it in an attempt to gain some pity. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's not true. My belief is that they probably are in trouble financially, but they have nobody to blame for themselves for just plain poor managment. From allowingp layer salaries to skyrocket, to the killing off of fan/player relationship, baseball has killed itself.

Goldberg: "No, see, that's where you're wrong. It ain't who's left, it's - WHO'S NEXT?"

    charlotte?

i dunno...i thought that NC was the hotbed of NCAA basketball and look at the hornets? headed to NO????

yeah, i think that NC/SC/GA is the hotbed of Minor league Baseball, but i don't think they will care for a team...

Well, the reason Charlotte soured on the Hornets was because their owner was accuised of sexual harassment, and you can imagine how well that went over in the Bible Belt. That, and his unwillingness to resign his own players, drove fans away. Then he threatened to leave, and the fans told him to fuck off. They love the Hornets, but they hate Shinnridge.

No chance in hell. Basketball is in our blood. We love it so much, we won't support bad owners even if it means the team leaves. ACC FOREVER. But do I think we could support a baseball team?? Probably not right now. It'd be nice to be able to keep up Football and Hockey for the moment. Maybe a few more years down the road when the Canes are more cemented....

I don't think the "surprising team" was the Tigers. Illitch has money, and he just went and signed Cujo for his Red Wings, had he been in cash trouble, that likely wouldn't have happened.

I think the mystery team will remain a mystery, at least until something does happen. Or someone with a big mouth meets someone with a lot of money.

... T.R. is right -- it's another case of owners crying poverty in order to bring fan wrath upon those evil, greedy players.

The way I feel: If M.L.B. or the Detroit Tigers (as an example) wants to receive the PUBLIC sympathy and support for their alleged plight, then they need to make their accounting books a matter of PUBLIC record. After all, the Players' salaries are released to the public, aren't they? If both sides, Players and Owners, are evil in this impending CBA dispute -- I'm willing to side with the evil I know, rather than the evil I don't know.

The owners are, and always have been, the people responsible for the salaries of the players and the economic strength of the league. The sole exception is in the case of independent arbitration, a provision that the owners agreed to incorporate into the CBA as far back as the early 1970's. The owners have no one to blame but themselves for the ridiculous financial disparity among the member clubs.

How can the Detroit Tigers be in the gutter financially when their owner, Mike Ilitch, also owns the Detroit Red Wings?? The Red Wings have the highest player payroll in the NHL, by a considerable margin.

Someone is lying.

Money from one pocket to the other, Dutch. Maybe if he opened a few more Little Caesar's franchises, he could afford two teams. But didn't the Rangers have the highest NHL payroll? Once again, it's a matter of intelligence in the front office... the Wings spent wisely, my Rangers didn't. (sigh)

Still, though, the owners need to open their books to the public, and on more than a one-off basis. You're not the only game in town anymore.

1 out last night, bottom of the 3rd in Baltimore, Orioles up 2-1, runners on the corners. Fly out to right field for the 2nd out, and the runner on first was doubled up for the inning-ending DP.
