And you know who it's being reported they are??

No, not the Twins and Expos.

Selig says one team "might not make payroll this coming Monday, and the other doesn't appear likely to financially last the rest of the season. One will surprise you."

Tampa Bay is one.

The second is the DEFENDING WORLD CHAMPION Arizona Diamond Backs!!!

I don't know how or why this is the case for Arizona, despite their high payroll. Either way, this does not bode well for future expansion hopefuls. The Devil Rays are hopeless. Arizona will likely sink once Shilling blows his arm out for good a year or three from now. And same with Randy Johnson, though he'll last a bit longer I predict.

Tough break. I've never seen a team be forced to contract DURING a season! And before anyone says that MLB won't let that happen... Selig said that he's been increasing these two teams' lines of credit with the office of MLB for quite some time, and he's fed up. They're not getting any additional breaks. If they can't survive, he wants them gone.

As much as I don't like Selig, I say well done Bud.

...dammit, now who are my Bosox gonna pick on in the division? Oh, right, Toronto and Baltimore.

Anyway, if the status is going to return to the 1997 quo, so be it. It's not MLB's job to provide welfare. Then again, they did buy up the Expos, but that was so Loria could run the Marlins into the ground and help Bahstin get an owner that can pay enough attention to sack Duquette (I'm personally not going to forgive him, for any reason whatsoever). Tampa Bay had no business getting a team (for reasons I'm not gonna discuss), and Arizona just can't support their team financially at this time. I bet a more established franchise could carry this payroll without even flinching, but that's just me.

I say "great". If Major League Baseball completely collapsed and had to start over from square one, it would be the best thing that could happen. The owners have this unbelievable expectation that the world should feel like "oh my god, baseball franchises don't make a profit, the very fabric of America is in mortal danger." Gimme a break. If they really don't make money, let them fold like any other business, too bad but that's how it works. If they don't fold, well, it'll show what Bud's word is worth (like we don't already know.)

Not like it matters. As soon as the Spos make it to the wld card spot, the strike will hit.

On June 27th, 2002, the Montreal Expos (number one on the MLB contraction list) added MONEY to their payroll, aquiring Bartolo Colon. In a time like this, there's two quotes that come to the forefront;

cfgb: "I hate to say it, but Atlanta really needs to be watching their rear ends".
And Number Two;

DJ FrostyFreeze: "PLEASE BELIEVE IT!"

Baseball can easy fix this if Bud-d-Bud would just let some teams move.

Can you imagine how much better things will be if/when Montreal moves to Washington, Florida moves to Charlotte, Tampa Bay moves to Las Vegas and Milwaukee moves to Mexico?

Yeah, a guy can dream. But the first three teams(Milwaukee is really stuck with the new ballpark) could fix themselves to a certain degree if they could just pull up the roots and go.

More proof that the owners, not the players are a fault for the out of control salaries.

I don't think the second team is the Diamondbacks. If you read the story, it says that MLB secured loans for the Diamondbacks and the Devil Rays over the WINTER. The Chicago Tribune has disclosed one team he spoke of is the Devil Rays, but they are not the team that would have trouble meeting payroll.

As far as the Diamondbacks, they got a $160 million infusion from new investors right before the season, attendance is way up, and although they have a large payroll (about $90 million, I believe), at least 30 - 50% of that is deferred. So, while they may carry a lot of debt (especially with getting no TV money until next year), I don't think they are in danger of going out of business.

No teams will miss paying players

Whew! What a close call! Those poor owners! Thank God the problem mysteriously resolved itself in a matter of hours!

This situation is just getting beyond pathetic.

The suspense is building for this Monday for the Soap Opera known as Major League Baseball. This is the most screwed up booking job by an organization run by Bud Seling.

Perhaps Major League Baseball is heading the way of WorldCom and Enron.

Man, I could only wish. Having no baseball team as a kid and picking the new team with the cool uniforms, and then having your team suck because no one goes, it sucks. Yeah, they snuck that Championship in, but this nonsense since then has washed that away, sadly. I'm all for Charlotte. Hell, they can play in the middle of a cornfield in Iowa for all I care, as long as people go to the games. I *think* Columbus would support a team, but it'll never happen. They're not gonna put 3 teams in Ohio.

I don't see why the would not. Columbus is in the middle of the state far enough away from Cincy and Cleveland to make a difference. And it's not like the Indians are going to be doing much anytime soon. Plus, the only games in town are the NHL and MLS so it's not like there is too much to compete with(until OSU football starts)

Bring a major league baseball team to Indianapolis!

If you've ever been here, you gotta see Victory Field. It is truly a thing of beauty. Plus, the sports business in Indianapolis is already flourishing with the Pacers and the Colts.

I think Indianopolis and Charlotte can both support baseball teams.... but that's my opinion. Move some teams around... dont contract the teams with a history.

I've torn myself apart.... and tried to figure out why... but the only answer i was ever given... that really fits..... is the fact... that women are crazy.

charlotte?

i dunno...i thought that NC was the hotbed of NCAA basketball and look at the hornets? headed to NO????

yeah, i think that NC/SC/GA is the hotbed of Minor league Baseball, but i don't think they will care for a team...

but yeah, move a team, don't kill a team, re-intigrate the players in a draft and then have an expansion draft for the new team [like the CFL does when it kills a team, like by boys in Baltimore that took the Cup]

If the Diamondbacks can't make payments then what does this mean for the Phoniex Suns? Aren't they both owned by Jerry Colangelo?

The two teams in question were the Tigers and the Devil Rays according to the NY Times.

C'mon now. The two teams in question are probably the Bad News Bears and the Waffletown Syrups. What reason do you have to think that this was anything other than a very clumsy attempt to garner sympathy and ratchet pressure up on the players? They're going to go broke in THREE DAYS, but suddenly they're not, and no one explains how this miracle came about?

Actually, ESPNEWS reported that they took a loan from major league baseball and that one of the teams has offered a players for cash trade.

I'm still very skeptical, and I think anyone should be. If Bud had said something like:

"Folks, we don't think the Detroit Tigers can make their next payroll. We hope we're wrong, but they've been losing $X for Y years now... their creditors, A Bank, B Bank, and C Private Investor, are refusing to loan them any more money... there's just no way we see that they can stay in business anymore. Here's what we're going to do on Monday if the situation occurs..."

...then that would be credible. But they refuse to say what team it is... they refuse to give any specifics about their financial situation... and they apparently haven't thought about how they're going to handle this upcoming disaster that is supposedly going to happen in a matter of days? That is not even close to how a responsible business would present this information to the public. Therefore, I can't see it as anything other than an empty threat.
